LL has always recorded anywhere from 25 - 50 demos per album project and he and Def Jam would always pick what they think would work based on the current climate of the fickle hip hop audience. Whatever they think would stick they'd go back in the studio and refine it until the final mix, that's how albums were made back in the days.
