Jay-Z

In preparation for the widely anticipated 11th solo studio album from Jay-Z, The Blueprint 3, KevinNottingham.com is proud to dedicate the next 11 days to one of the greatest emcees of our time. Over the course of the next eleven days, we will highlight each solo album Jay-Z has released, starting today with Reasonable Doubt and ending on September 11th with The Blueprint 3.

Eleven Days of Jay has pretty much been in the planning stages for the past year when it was announced that The Blueprint 3 was being prepped for release. What started as a week long tribute to Jay-Z (similar to our artist themed weeks for Ghostface, A Tribe Called Quest, and Kanye West) has turned into an eleven day extravaganza.  Since Thomas and I are probably two of the biggest Jay stans on the planet, we had to do this up right.

For the next eleven days you will be inundated with everything Jay-Z, to include: album info/discussion, videos, compilations, samples, polls, mixtapes, top 10 lists, and much more. So if you’re a Jay-Z fan, this is where you’ll want to be. If not, come back to the site on September 12th!

    @Isreal

Rae has been getting all types of love all over the net. We had numerous Rae post on the site regarding OB4CLII for a while.

I stan for Jay and Wu. These post we are putting up take MAD time and they weren’t going to go to waste just because another album came out.

Rae will get some shine over the next week or so.

These 11 days will be as exciting as Jay-Z’s new album was.
    (see what I did there?)
Album is laughable for the most part, few decent joints but it’s typical Jay-Z album status. More bad songs than good ones, yet still people call him the GOAT for three out of eleven though. (even though BP and RD are both severely overrated, RD isn’t even top 5 for the year that it came out in) Stans won’t be fans I suppose. Not sure if I’ll be commenting on the posts y’all make, keep your eyes open though because I may be blessing your vision with my posts.

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Thomas

Matt I will feel some kind of way if you don’t make a comment on our post. Now I am starting to question your taste in music because you believe that Chemical Warfare was “full of bangers.” That album had maybe 3/4 bangers maybe 5. I’m really trying to figure out what album you were listening to. Humm.

Anyhoo, as you said everyone has their own opinion. I guess you can have one as well. Everything will be finihsed on 9/12 if you wanted to know when to come back.

    hahah

  • Matt

I believe you took my use of the word “bangers” as “insanely dope tracks” which is wrong. A banger would be something that hits pretty hard in your car if you have a decent system, see:

    ALC Theme
    Lose Your Life
    Grand Concourse Benches (arguable)
    That’ll Work
    Keep The Heels On (arguable)
    Acts Of Violence
    Lights Camera Action
    Some Gangster Sh*t
    On Sight
    Under Siege
10/14 (obviously not including intro, and if you want to take off the “bonus” track that’s 9/13 bangers)

Even still, I said the album was dope but it’s not amazing or groundbreaking. Just a good hip-hop album that is a LOT better than the Blaqprint. Like I also stated in that post, I believe people came into that expecting “Back Again”‘s and “Smile”‘s which obviously didn’t happen. CW is leaps and bounds ahead of “1st Infantry” IMO, and it shows how great and how far Alan has come with his producing. He still has his soulful uplifting joints and his “punch you in the face” gritty shit. Album is still in the C+ to B- range for me (or a 77-82 KN scale). I’m heading out, I’ll be sure to visit the site tomorrow. I also believe that I’m worthy of receiving a shout-out in one of your new Hovito posts. Be good y’all.

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Thomas

So you’re talking about just the production I guess? Anyhoo, my 98′ Honda Civic has the factory radio so my system sucks. I’m all for growth from an artist, but the production either didn’t match up with artist or vice versa.

Again, its a matter of opinion and taste. I’ve given the album good spins…I find myself skipping a lot of the tracks to get to the ones I like. The rapping on those joints with Oh No…I just can’t take. Now the Fab joint bangs all away around tho. Agree with that.

Matt you won’t get a shout out on a post fam until you tip your hat to Hov! hahah.

“I believe you took my use of the word “bangers” as “insanely dope tracks” which is wrong. A banger would be something that hits pretty hard in your car if you have a decent system, see”

You may as well take Benzino verses, set them to the 12 best Preemo beats of all time and slap them onto a CD if this is your view of hip hop.

  • Matt

@ Charity, that’s basically what “The Blaqprint” is. I don’t even understand why he continues to work with these slightly above average cats instead of dudes like Nas, Rakim etc. Even some of the “newer” cats that he’s worked with that are miles ahead of Blaq Poet, see Reks, Torae, Termanology etc. Why would he give an album of (mostly dope) beats to BP and not any of the aforementioned artists? I’m aware that he didn’t produce the whole album, but he did executive produce it and a large majority is produced by him so…

But w/e, I guess he can do what he likes with his music. He’s still one of the greatest producers ever, I just wish he’d give an album of beats to someone who’d wreck ‘em. Instead, I have to force myself to sit through most of the “Blaqprint” if I wanna hear the dope beats. (and wtf was he thinking with that “Stretchmarks and Cigarette Burns” song, that shit is terrible, why did Preemo let BP use that on the album!!??!!!) Anyways, I’m sick of all of these lame “underground” heads that only listen to this or that. A good album that dropped this year was Slim Thug’s “Boss Of All Bosses”. Now Thugga obviously isn’t a lyrical god, but he’s decent and he has a pretty great selection of beats on that. “Top Drop” and “Leaning” are always on repeat for me. I like beats and rhymes combined but if I get fantastic beats over average rapping or vice versa I’ll usually pay attention and at least give something a shot.

    @Thomas
The album is mostly “punch you in the face” type of shit. The beats “bang” for the most part and the lyrics are pretty gritty so I guess that’s a complete definition of a banger. Like I said the only song I flat out don’t like in terms of rapping is the joint with Em but the beat is dope so I can sit through it. I suggest you listen to the album with a better system, it can change the way an album feels and obviously it will sound better. I’m amazed that you could sit through a whole album with BP though and the “Oh No” verse kills it for you. (although Crooked comes in and completely makes up for it) The only other song that I could understand a complaint about rapping is the Prodigy joint but I’ll admit that I’ve gotten used to hearing P x ALC so it doesn’t bother me as much. (HNIC, HNIC 2, Return of The Mac) I understand why someone wouldn’t like that track though. As for the production matching up with the artist, I disagree. Kool G fits perfectly with “ALC Theme” and Three 6 and Juvy also sound great on “That’ll Work”. Twista and Maxwell work fantastically on “Smile” and “Therapy” was already dope (imo) but then Kweli was on the album version to make it better. “Lose Your Life” is a bit old but it’s as good as ever, Snoop on the hook and Pusha and Jada on the verses all mesh for an insane track. Fame sounds proper on the hard-hitting “Lights, Camera, Action”. “On Sight” definitely shows that Alan isn’t getting to far away from his homeLAnd. Alchemist even closes off the album with his dope track “Take a Look Back”. The only songs that I could actually see some complaints to in terms of rapping are “Grand Concourse Benches”(maybe) “Keep The Heels On” and “Chemical Warfare” and the beats on all three of them are well done IMO.

I’ll not longer be talking about “Chemical Warfare” because I pretty much gave a mini-review of the album. I guess it’s either you like it or you don’t, I like it and y’all don’t. I wasn’t expecting any insanely high score but in comparison to the “Blaqprint” it’s just a better album IMO.

Anyways, I like Hov, he has a lot of classic songs. No classic albums in my eyes, but if you took all of his songs you could get a nice collection of five or six 14 track albums. I have a bigger problem with his fans than I do with Jay-Z. He’s somehow brainwashed these people to put him in their top 10′s and to call him consistent. My definition of the word is constantly putting out (at least) good albums. Yet he has three “classics” out of 11? IMO Vol 1-3 have insanely dope tracks, but OVERALL as albums they are average at best. BP 2 is hit or miss (why’d he even try for the double disc??) BP3 you haven’t heard yet, but it’s just like most Jay albums, few dope tracks but overall a let down. Dynasty is average, KC is …………. AG is good, but not great. So IMO, overall Jay has 3 albums that you absolutely need to hear. (and one of those I don’t even like, but I’ll let you all call it a “classic” *cough BP1) Like I said before, if you take Vol 1-3, BP 2 and 3, Dynasty, AG and KC and picked the dopest tracks along with Black Album, RD, and BP1 you’d have a pretty decent six albums. BUT, I look at the overall, and in the big picture Jay isn’t cutting it for me. I’ll tip my hat to him for taking advantage of stupid people, having “(one of) the hottest chicks in the game, wearing his chain”, and becoming insanely rich though.

Word up to the real GOAT Rakim though. Can you believe how dope ’96 was? I mean All Eyez On Me, Seven Day Theory, ATLiens, Ironman, Illadelph Halflife, It Was Written, Hell On Earth, Bow Down, Muddy Waters, The Score, ETC. I’m a fan of a lot of newer music, but I highly doubt any future time period is fucking with 92-97 in terms of hip-hop. Very long post… and now I’ll be heading to bed. I’ll be back tomorrow and see the replies. Deja Vu? Ha.

  • Charity

BP3 has fifteen tracks. What We Talkin’ About, DOA, Run This Town, Empire State, A Star Is Born, Venus vs. Mars, Already Home, Hate (for the verses, not the god-awful production), So Ambitious and Young Forever — ten tracks — are solid. WWTA, DOA, Empire, A Star Is Born, Hate and So Ambitious are more than good; they are great.

    IMHO.

  • MicrafawnCherker

After listening to both albums I’m pretty sure its OB4CL you should be counting down till.

  • Charity

Just finished listening to OB4CL2. Yeah, it’s definitely better than BP3 — I mean, it’s a nearly flawless album.

  • Matt

Umm, I told you so? Haha. Still haven’t listened to OB4CL2 but I’ve read nothing but great things. Waiting ’till Tuesday to go pick it up.

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Thomas

Matt looking in mirror talking to himself again. haha!
