Raekwon vs O.C.

As much as I’m a Jay-Z fan I stan for the Wu as well. We have been planning Jay-Z week for over a year and lets be honest who really thought Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…Pt. II would see the light of day?

With that said we haven’t forgotten about Rae.  We’ll have some goodies from The Chef this week.  When the snippets leaked about a week ago the sample used in “Pyrex Vision” was noticeable as Lord Finesse freaked this joint back in 1997 for O.C..

We’re going to try something different with the Who Spit feature. Instead of streaming the audio we are going to try using YouTube videos instead. Nothing else will change tho.

Ok..who got who?  I’m loving the new Rae joint (I said I was gonna wait to listen to it..hahaha), but O.C.’s flow, lyrics, and beat runs laps around Rae’s song.

Who you got?

JJ Band: “Changing Faces”
From the album: J.J. Band (1971)

O.C.: “Jewelz”
From the album: Jewelz (1997)
Produced by Lord Finesse

Raekwon: “Pyrex Vision”
From the album: Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…Pt II (2009)
Produced by Marley Marl

O.C.’s joint had more shit to relate to and is more positive. Rae’s shit flashes me back to hanging out with cats i should not have been chilling with.

Jewelz is such an ill deep song that i know most cats is gonna vote for OC but i’m knuckleheading it and running with Rae cause “pyrex visions” is too HAUNTING ( i wish it was a full track ). I can never listen to it just once. Plus I just love Rae’s flow and abstract imagery, to me he’s the best writer in hip hop for that.

I like what Rae did on the track. Something different if not new for him, but when I heard this….I forgot Rae was rhyming and quickly went to Youtube to listen to O.C.’s song.

OC and Finesse did a classic with htat loop. Jewelz was such a monumental way to end that monument tape, classico supreme!

I also noticed the sample as soon as I listened to “Pyrex”. OC’s hook on “Jewelz” is memorable. He and Rae have always made those catchy, elaborate hooks which alone can carry the song. I only heard “Pyrex” a few times, but not the entire song so it’s difficult for me to really make a fair comparison of the two joints. However, Rae’s flow on this song is the most laid back I’ve heard from him which is very refreshing to hear.

Regardless of whose flow over the song is better really doesn’t matter. OC and Raekwon are both real emcees whose love for the art is worth admiring.

Great website by the way. I discovered it only a few weeks back. Thank you. OnE

    @Omar

Rae’s track is just over a min long. It would have been nice if he would have freaked it for another verse at least.

  • THE HOMEY

OC 2ND VS CRAZY. THE HOMEY RAE GOT THAT THO. IMAGERY BE 2ND TO NONE. TH TONE SICK. BEAT DIRTIER TOO.

Rae did it much better. O.C.’s verse gets stale fast and it’s just another rap. Rae’s song hits harder and he got the ‘sprirt’ of the sample better

Rae sounds mush mouth on this joint…maybe he is trying to convey how tired he is cooking over that pot. However, O.C.’s verses, hook, and over structure of the song blows Rae out the water. Marley quicken the temp of the sample tho. Lord Finesse slowed it down.

I just like O.C.’s better. The use of this sample is and will always be about “Jewelz” to me.

I’m glad someone is still checking for these post!
