Jay-Z vs. Cormega

Jay-Z and Cormega both rhyme over Stanley Clarke’s “I Got To Find My Own Place.”  Cormega has always been on of my favorite artist.  I’ve praised his lyrical skills before on this site (here & here).  Everyone should know my thought’s on Jay!?!

Cormega and Jay-Z go in different directions as far as subject matter for their respective tracks.  Cormega’s song is extremely violent in nature with him detailing a murder (song was banned and was probably the reason he was dropped by Def Jam in 1998).  “Lyrical Exercise” is classic Jay with his witty word play and cockiness/arrogance.

Difficult choice, however, the vividness of Cormega’s lyrics along with “Deadman Walking” being the better produced song has my vote going to Mega.  I know, I know…what a surprise coming from me!

That Cormega single “Dead Man Walking” was released sometime during the spring of 1998, right before “The Testament” was supposed to drop. It came with the clean/main/inst.

“Dead Man Walking” was released in 1998…you’re right. The Testament was officially released in 2005. I used the official release date of the album/song. I did talk about it being released in 1998 in the write up tho!

I never liked Mega. He was allways one of those cats who could spit like an animal but never could actually make a great song. And that holds true even now. I’m not really a jay fan but I can admit, Jay makes great songs alot of times. This one is no different in either way for me. I take Jay all day.

    ps
Def Jam didn’t drop him cuz of the song. They dropped him cause he went through a “Murda Mook ” phase. “I can spit crazy but for some reason it just doesn’t translate to my songs in the sudio”

this song begs to differ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyGISOfNJX4

I don’t think you listen hear Mega’s album The Realness and say he can’t make a great song.

gotta give it to jay on this one, but all in all i prefer cormega.

btw, he’ll release “born & raised” on the 20th of October! Production handled by Pete Rock, Easy Mo Bee, Large Professor, DJ Premier, Buckwild, Havoc, DR Period and Ayatollah. Real Hip Hop!!!

“This album is the truest look into me, not just as an artist, but as a writer and as a person. I came into my own in a lot of ways on this album. Born And Raised is the first album where I talk about being a father and the impact my daughter has had on my life. It’s also the first time I experimented with live sound without the guidance of a producer and the first time I got to record with producers and artist whose work inspired me to become an emcee.”

    can’t wait!

I give my vote to Lloyd Banks on the 1st Banks Workout from 50cent Is The Future from 02…

my second vote goes for Jay. Dont understand why they made it a bonuscut? He goes hard and lives up to the title of the song.

@Janozch I think you have the wrong post.

Mega got rhymes for days DJTommyIIGunz. I would think you would enjoy Mega cause he is about lyrics and word play. The vividness of his story is chilling even to this day. Mega isn’t about making the normal structured songs. He just makes music.

    I roll with jay

    @DJTommyIIGunz
    CORMEGA IS A BEAST

I’m a lil late to this, but come on, how is the Cormega version the better produced track, listen to how Just adds the drum break with a different part of the sample to give the song character. Doesn’t matter if you like Jay or not, a better track is a better track!
