The Black Album Remixes

blackalbumremixes

The Black Album was the one that started it all… remixing a whole album, that is. Yeah, there are probably more American Gangster remix albums out there, but there are some classic Black Album remixes. I mean, who could forget the controversy over DJ Danger Mouse’s The Grey Album, where he remixed Hov over beats sampled from The Beatles? Other noteworthy producers made a name for themselves with their Black Album remixes, including Kev Brown, Illmind, Kno (of Cunninlynguists), and 9th Wonder. In addition, a few veteran producers took a jab at it as well, such as Pete Rock, MF DOOM, and RJD2. These are, in my opinion, the best of the Black Album remixes. Hit the jump to check these out…

If you have a favorite remix, feel free to post in the comments.

the mf doom & pete rock are “offical” remix albums? or did some random ass dj mash the 2 together? I remember someone trying to sell me a primo black album. As soon as i listened to it, Dj “so & so” took credit for the mix.

Far as i know Mike the 9th wonder joint is offical and the Kev Brown joint (highly recommend this one)

3 Marcha September 8, 2009 at 12:42 pm

Nice. The Grey Album is insane, and I’ll definitely have to check out Kno’s.
Been looking for that one!

Props to KN, and to everybody, be sure to check out 100dbs’ version at:
http://100dbs.com/production/argyle/

He killed it, IMO.

Yeah, 100dBs did a great job too… I dig just about anything dBs does.

Always thought that The Grey Album really set off the mash-up pop subgenre that we have today with Girl Talk among other artists, still my fav remix album alongside Nastradoomus. Does the Jay-Z/Linkin Park album Collision Course sorta apply as a Black Album remix album? I def liked that. That was 2005, maybe I’m jumping ahead…

9 Chris (Divided Souls Ent) September 8, 2009 at 2:43 pm

I gotta check out this Pete Rock version. Hope it’s original joints, too. Great job again on yet another day. Peace

whaaaaaa?? I never knew Illmind did a Black Album remix as well…this was back when he had a more soulful style on his tracks so I’m sure this one is dope!

11 J. Rizzle September 8, 2009 at 2:52 pm

Thanx for having the Pete Rock version

12 Thomas September 8, 2009 at 3:10 pm

I think the Pete Rock joint is a blend of Pete’s beats. I’m not sure Pete had anything to do with it. Could be wrong.

13 GNX Music September 8, 2009 at 3:18 pm

Pete Rock one was pretty cool. Any Pete Rock fan could get into it easy. The Danger Mouse one was a hot concept from top to bottom. Sonically it sounds like it was engineered or mixed by a 5th grader. Still want to check out some of the others.

14 MIKE September 8, 2009 at 3:34 pm

Thomas is right……I forgot I own this pete rock version on cd. I looked it up & it states “directed, mixed & arranged by Quo”………..

15 Dr. MaD September 8, 2009 at 4:22 pm

The brown album! Dope!

16 FlamesYalll September 8, 2009 at 4:46 pm

Yeah, the Kev Brown is ace!!

Good ‘ish Kev.

17 JtothaI September 8, 2009 at 5:20 pm

The Pete Rock remix album is blends, and NOT by Pete Rock. I bought a hard copy from the DJ who mixed it. I can’t remember the DJ’s name but can dig out the CD and emails to him if anyone wants more information.

18 Justin September 8, 2009 at 5:31 pm

I’ve always thought Kno did the best remix album. Until I heard the Tokyo Cigar, download it now!

# 9th Wonder – Black Is Back
# DJ Danger Mouse – The Grey Album
# Illmind – The Black and Tan Album
# Kev Brown – The Brown Album
# Kno – The White Album
= Real remix albums. Liked 9th’s, illmind and kev’s and even liked the concept for dangermouse even though the chopping aint too good
The others are mash-ups, even though most of the beats are done well and suit the acapellas, it offers no new beatsl

The MF DOOM album is not official, there’s another one floating around as well that isn’t official either. Just another mix of people jacking Metal Fingers beats.

21 BobbyJames September 8, 2009 at 6:23 pm

22 BobbyJames September 8, 2009 at 6:26 pm

23 Brendan AKA Crates September 8, 2009 at 8:17 pm

24 Dave September 8, 2009 at 10:22 pm

my fav Black Album Remixes were the Grey Album & the Kno White Albulum. i do remember one where someone sampled the Nirvana MTV Unplugged songs & did it, i can’t remember the DJ but i think it was actually prettyg ood. i’m going to hunt it down & put it up for you guys to check out

25 Dave September 8, 2009 at 10:32 pm

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aw339OamN8k

i forgot they mixed in bitsa of Jigga’s Unplugged album so it sounds like it’s a real MTV Unplugged joint but with Nirvana playing the music & Jay spittin

33 100dBs September 9, 2009 at 10:37 am

i think Kno’s is by far the best out of the bunch. the way he flipped Os Mutantes for “Lucifer” is unbelievable.

Danger’s got a lot of rec and the ideas are cool, but what GNX said is true.. the mixing is AWFUL on that album. also, i don’t like the fact that he got completely lazy with “My 1st Song” just because it’s in 6/8 and not 4/4. it’s as if he didn’t know how to do that time signature so he just put a bunch of random shit behind Jay. still conceptually the best one, and it was good enough to launch DM’s career, but i think Kno’s is way underrated.

34 DJ Ruckus September 9, 2009 at 8:15 pm

I gotta shout out Nottz Raw..he did an EP to the Black Album that was dope.. I definately need to look for that joint again

35 John Doe September 11, 2009 at 12:39 am

36 LPeezy September 13, 2009 at 4:08 am

There was also the Paul Nice version of the black album, called “The (Unofficial) Black Album Remix” (even tho it was probably official since Paul Nice is credited on it)

if anyone interested, I can post it up.
