j-scrilla

Inner Loop Records recording artist, J-$crilla, recently released his first solo production album, Culture of Honor. With big name features such as Oddisee, General Steele, JR Writer, Cassidy and more, it’s definitely an album worth checking out.

We had the opportunity to catch up with the producer and find out more about him and his work. Hit the jump to get to know J-$crilla…

Where You Reppin:

DMV (DC, MD VA)

Introduce Yourself:

I’m J-$crilla. A producer, DJ, promoter and Head A&R at Inner Loop Records.

Current projects we should be looking out for:

j-scrilla-coverCulture Of Honor, out now on Inner Loop Records. It is my first solo production album and it’s just that real hip-hop with my own twist. It pretty much makes your neck dance not your feet so much. It’s got JR Writer, Cassidy, Oddisee, General Steele, Bloodsport, Reef The Lost Cauze, Slaine, Ankh Amen Ra, Chaundon, Nickelus F, Wais P The Pimp, K-Beta, Sketch, Ra The MC, Muggsy Malone, Lyriciss and a ton more on it.

Definitely cop that Bloodsport “Pray For The Best Prepare For The Worst”, it’ll will be dropping soon and that’s got production from Guns-N-Butter, The Runnerz, Sarom and more. He’s one of my favorite rappers ever and he been holding down North Philly, he droping on Universal/Starrblazz.

Previous work that we should know about:

I formed a production team with Chop-La-Rok back in 2003 called Guns-N-Butter and we put out 3 mixtapes called “Raise The Hammer” and they were all producer based mixtapes that featured songs we did with Agallah, Nature, Tragedy, NORE, Smif-N-Wessun, K-Beta, The Wisemen, Bloodsport and many more. You can go to my myspace.com/gunsnbutter page to get some history on those and listen. I’ve produced on projects by Tragedy Khadafi, Heltah Skeltah, Doap Nixon, Smif-N-Wessun and many more. Lotta mixtape placements from Green Lantern, Don Cannon, DJ Clue, etc to DJ Modesty, P-Cutta and J-Ronin.

Main musical inspirations:

The Bomb Squad, Prince Paul, The Beatnuts, DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Alchemist, Muggs, DJ INF

If you had to pick one song that defines your career to date, what song would that be?

NORE/Nature “The Grimiest” because the way that song went down was kinda crazy. Lots of trees, henny, video cameras and food got ran through on some spur of the moment recording at NORE’s old studio. And, the funny thing is, I never heard from NORE again! But, he was mad cool. LOL. The song was just crazy to me, like that’s Guns-N-Butter sound.

Why should the readers and fans give you a shot and listen to your music from here on out?

j-scrilla2Because I’m bringing new shit to the table. I may have influences, but I can honestly say nobody makes beats or produces like I do. There really is no father to my style and me and the folks on the album like doing cool stuff that people should wanna know about. The “Culture Of Honor” ain’t just an album it’s just the way we live. Oh and I’m also dropping all the instrumentals with the album purchase, so emcees and beat fans should want this.

What’s next for you?

Get Inner Loop into a fully functional label, we’re already one of the most creative promotional companies outta the east coast so now we’re taking it to the releases and branding. “Culture Of Honor” is the first of many. K-Beta “Sober” is up next featuring production by the Inner Loop camp- Soulful, E-Minah, Overok, Mark NFinit- and then of course Charlie Brown, Oddisee, Kev Brown and Team Demo. You already know about that K-Beta “89 To 09″ joint we released a few months ago. Then, Sketch and myself are halfway into an album we got called “Tommy Gunz” that should be ready to drop by the end of the year. Sketch is retarded.

We also planning out new events and more remake projects like the DMV Nas and Jay-Z joints we did which got over 100,000 downloads combined the past year. I think the next one will be the DMV Chronic- we going to show the world how DC smokes!

If you could only take one record on a deserted island with you, what album would that be?

Portishead “Dummy”

Any shout outs or last words?
