M.O.P. Manager Releases Another Official Statement Regarding Beat Jacking Allegations

M.O.P.

Just got this statement in my inbox this morning from M.O.P. manager, Laze. Compared to Lil Fame’s statement, this one seemed a little more PC. The problem I have with the statement, is that Laze seems to dance around the subject. He starts off by saying that he’s dispelling a “rumor.” Fact is, there was no rumor. This shit actually happened, no matter whose fault it was. Maybe the “rumor” he speaks of is the accusation being pointed at Lil Fame. Lil Fame had previously put the blame on Laze, however Laze comes back and says it was a “clerical error” in the credits processes. Hit the jump for the full statement… and if you’re in the dark about what happened, read the original story here.

Oh, and a little good news that came out of this, we actually got Lil Fame and Kil on the phone together over the weekend. Not sure what was said, but the fact that Lil Fame agreed to call Kil says a lot.

From Laze:

I have the unfortunate responsibility to dispell a sad rumor. It comes at a time when all of our energy should be focused on more positive things like the release of the new MOP Album foundation.

Nevertheless its our responsibility to speak on it.

In all of our years (MOP’s) we have strived for the underdog, the unheard of producer (DR period, mahogany, jazo, fame, Notts,) the up and coming video director (hype williams, chris robinson, brian luvar, jessie terrero).

You see all these talented people were brand new unproven prodigies when they began their respective works with works with the mashoutposse. So it comes as a major surprise that someone would say we stole their beat and that we would address it with such disdain.

I understand the process of credits and turning in a record so I know that this is a clerical error can easily be fixed. But fame is hurt, being and up an coming producer he knows the struggle of making beats and having to almost give them away to be heard. We feel the pain of the kid in his crib, teaching himself how to use reasons, or his first attempt at an mpc 2000.

Being from a place where the average 15 year olds equipment was a mack we encourage the move to a mac or pc. And would never take a kids track without making every attempt to give him credit.

We spent a lot of years making our type of music on purpose for that part of society that doesn’t get represented. We left labels and sometimes financial security on sometimes our code alone. So it hurts us that any one would call the mashout posse thieves.

Even in the robbery days it was point blank. And not from the poor.

I hope yawl paying attention.

Salute.

Yeh, he doesn’t actually say anything in that… it’s like politician talk.

  • C-Bone

Did you expect anything different? Of course, coming out and admitting 100% responsibility would have been nice, but not likely.

  • http://www.twitter.com/so_reasonable reasonable

Alright…it’s been acknowledged, so is Kil going to get paid now?

  • Jay Gee

Bottom line – On a major release, saying that the manager forgot to add your name on the album is about as bullshit an answer as you can get. Are they really gonna tell us that they just played a beat and rhymed and wow, it’s on the album? I didn’t think guys who have been struggling and at it for so long would ever do that……keep talking in circles.

Man,u said all of that to say what?I’ve always been a MOP fan, but jacking is jacking,no matter what your past history says. There never was a clerical error with those other producers.Besides, a clerical error is usually when u misspell someone’s name, not totally forget to give that person credit at all. That same shit wouldnt have happened if it was Preemo or some other big producer. No matter how u chop it up,smash it ,grind it,blend it or puree it, it’s still gonna be peanuts.

Wow…this clarifies nothing. Someone identified in the other post that the beat was slower and the hats were different. How did THAT happen? I really believe that Fame redid (or adjusted) the beat and felt as though he would get away with it. Just man up and stop making excuses. Admit you were wrong, fix it and keep it moving.

This still leaves so much to be desired though, doesn’t it?

I mean, the way I feel about it, until Kil gets his, this is still an issue unsettled on the MOP camp’s side.

Here’s the thing, until this is settled, the entire MOP family looks at fault for this, since at this point, we have no idea who to point the finger at. Fame blamed someone it seems, now the person he’s blaming is putting it on another party, etc. This could go on forever.

For a group so hardcore, so raw, so gritty, and so about being blunt, this is bullshit. MOP are some of my heroes of rap, and this, this response doesn’t “make things better,” in fact, it really side steps the issue.

I recently was Editor in Chief of a Magazine publication here. I’ve read this thing at LEAST 10-15 times to make sure there were no errors. It’s non-profit, we aren’t making money off of it. With something with money at stake, with careers on stake, I’d figure “The Foundation” would’ve gone through a similar process.

If you guys really did care about keeping this game clean, keeping dignity and respect and pride in hip hop, then this wouldn’t of happened and handled so poorly at the moment.

Big shouts to Kevin, Thomas and crew for doing work on this, because really, this is about to hit a low point for me and my love for MOP…. and man, it really really sucks

he’s making it like MOP are the victims

    Bro.. tell me about it…

  • http://blog.nobodyfamousmusic.com Nobody Famous

for an “official” statement, dude sure has horrible writing skills

    reasons? mack? yawl?

  • http://www.kevinnottingham.com Deez

not to mention misspelling one of the “talents” he took pride in bringing up.

also, that hype williams comment is bold

  • bailey

how they gonna release something to address the beat jacking allegation and the first thing this nigga gon say is a plug for the album?

“i gotta make some shit clear real fast … and it’s that the foundation droppin september 15th.

p.s. some nigga made a mistake but we got it handled.”

we don’t wanna hear that shit

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Kevin

Yeah, that was the gist of it bailey….

I can’t believe anyone would think that a statement like this is acceptable (not least of all because of the bad spelling and poor grasp of grammar).

If, as the story has been told, neither the artist or management made any attempt to get in touch with the beat maker, to say that it was simply a “clerical error” is nonsense. To have contacted the beat maker, agreed a fee, signed a licence and then to have made a mistake on the album credits would be a clerical error. To not bother to do any of those things is something quite different altogether.

To then issue a statement in an attempt to talk your way out of the whole thing is only making matters worse, especially when about half of the statement focuses on painting the beat maker as some ‘kid’, who should feel lucky they put him on.

To be frank, it’s a pretty simple beat that wouldn’t be technically difficult to recreate, but nonethless, if I were the beat maker I’d be pretty offended by this statement.

If anything good comes out of this, I hope it is that other artists / managers realise they’re going to lose respect (and most likely album sales) if they don’t play by the rules.

  • Peet

Kil you out there? Care to fill us in on the phone call with Fame? We all dying to hear man…

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Kevin

Kil will be replying with his own official statement once everything is settled.

  • J. Rizzle

The typical bullshit response…MOP should jus man up and admit to what the phuck they did, pay youngin, sign him to his camp then move on from there.

  • http://allhiphop.com rampage

A lot of people dont understand how the industry is. Shit like this happens all the time. Producers jack beats and labels/management mess up the credits. I dont think fame tried to take credit for someone else’s beat. He got dope beats of his own. I do believe there was a mix up with the credits. Fame may be guilty of not followin up on things like producer credits, spelling, etc. Usually management handles this stuff. Kil deserves to be credited but he should have went through the proper channels to resolve the issue instead of just sayin cats stole from him. Hopefully both sides have learned from this.
