Great review, very dope album - happy for Wale on this one. The album was worth the wait (it was postponed at least twice).

@ Thomas, I don't think folks are turnin' on this cat. He's a dope lyricist. I don't think anyone can really deny that much. As far as how u feel about XO, that's ur own opinion. I just happen to think dude is pretty ill as well and his last couple of mixtapes are pretty damn good. If Blu or Fashawn or whoever came out w/ a mediocre ass album then thats the breaks. I understand Wale stuck w/ the same production, but it wasn't there beat-wise for me on his debut.

And as far as the whole two down deal... at least we know Wale will be there in the long run. The other guy said he wants to do hip-hop for a few years then focus on acting. Awesome.

XO's mixtapes are not very good. He is better in the context of Diamond District than on his own.

I think I get the internets now. When you are unknown artist and have a strong loyal following on the internet you are the next best thing. Once you go on tours without an album out, then get a co-sign from a big named artist, are on t.v. a lot, in some magazines, make some mistakes in interviews, and promote your album like crazy (as you should during these times) those same fans turn their back on you.

Two down (Drake/Wale) and more to follow. Dude is making the same music and using the same producers. Nothing different other than he is seen as "popular" now.

I hope Fashawn or Blu (he may be signing to a major soon...or at least that was the rumor a few months back) don't get "popular" outside of the internets because all of the "real fans" will turn on them.

There album is unremarkable. His mixtapes spin circles around it. Let's get real and go listen to Boy Meets World, what this album could have been.

@Lukus
Obviously...

I think they're talking about the XXL freshmen. I guess everyone forgot that Blu was on one of the covers as well and that his 'Debut' (not technically his debut, but...) was "Below The Heavens". If you believe that Cudi's or Wale's album is better than that then I don't know what to tell you...

According to that lame XXL list, I'd rate the debuts like this Blu > Curren$y > Wale / Cudi. The rest of them either haven't released an actual album or the album they released wasn't that great... IMO.

@Jason, Cudi had a better debut album?
I don't think I can compare these projects, just because they're pretty different. Though, whereas Cudi's was a love/hate debut album, there's not much to knock on Wale's.

This review is spot on Deez, I think the features are all appropriate and don't tend to take away or over-saturate the record with unnecessary clutter (still not a fan of Gucci though lol). I also like the fact that a lot of the production is handled by local duo BKS who have been producing for Wale from the beginning. Could've this record have been better? Probably... but its definitely not a bad debut from a new artist on a major label. The release of the album is symbolically a huge success for DMV hip hop regardless of what people's opinions of Wale as an artist are. DMV artists on twitter are all RT'ing and supporting Wale cause I think everyone understands the magnitude of what this record release means for hip hop in the DMV (even the underground/indie cats).

i dig this album. i've been rockin' with Wale for a minute, and, months ago, i made a decision to cop this album, so i figured it would be ill. it is. he made an album that his fanbase is gonna love, new fans will have to respect this, because he's doing him, making music with a great balance.

loved the review Deez. shit was dope homie. DMV should be very proud of this album. as an emcee myself, trying to create and push some ill shit, this definitely provides some motivation. Virginia Beach, Virginia is on the way...again. word to the Clipse! back to this album though, "shades" is dope, "contemplate" is really good (i was listening to the album with a friend, and he said, concerning this particular track, he hears a shitload of Hov in Wale).

dope shit.

yep solid album from my favourite of the freshman class - shades is top quality song (although i really cant relate to it!)

however...
i feel Kid CuDi had a better debut? maybe thats just me

and i struggle with the album because i felt some of the songs off back to the feature eclipsed some of the tracks of this LP (pot of gold & new soul particularly) - any reason why they wouldnt be considered LP-worthy? besides any sampling clearing issues
mark ronson's beat on pot of gold > his mirrors beat.

He was one of the opening acts for BP3 tour. To me it was pro-b-more crowd. from my experience b-more folks don't mess with go-go too much. He was able to get them to rock with him. Pts to me. Plus, he is just starting to get some commercial exposure....his music (from what I hear) is just getting played on the radio in the area.
