In honor of Freestyle Friday, I just had to post this crazy youtube video that I found of Eminem and Proof killing the freestyle with ease.  The “freestyle” is starting to go the way of dinosaur.  By saying this I mean that a lot of folks will write a flow down memorize it and kick it like it is fresh off the dome.  Now indeed it can be dope, but it is the not the art of “freestyle” in its truest form.  Sadly, several premier artists have admitted to being guilty of writing their verses before going in the booth and supposedly freestyling.  I have to take time out to salute the folks that still value the art of freestylin’ and also the memory of the late great Proof from the D.

The Lost Art of Freestyling…sounds like the next Wu-Tang album. Unfortunately most people nowadays have very little understanding of the parameters involved with freestyling let alone battling.

Its not just coming off of the dome with something original (i.e., never written or said before that moment) but if you’re battling someone, your verse is supposed to be a counterpoint to either:

    a) the best line that was just spit
    b) whatever word that had the greatest emphasis in their delivery
c)respnse to any diss of you that was just made

I’ve been in a lot of cyphers of the past couple of decades and you can tell the difference between the masters & pretenders. Nonetheless, SuperNat is ill with it BUT he would be hard pressed going through Gatin Island, Philly, or Bucktown…

“..will write a flow down memorize it and kick it like it is fresh off the dome.” it’s been like this for like 15 years now… u can always tell who is really freestyling and who isn’t especially when you listening on the radio. sometimes emcees mix and match too. part freestyle then part something they wrote
