Top 10 Smaller/Slept On Releases: 2009

Kevin: Every album in my Top 10 deserves the number one spot, as they all stayed in constant rotation all year long; most more than other major releases.

Justin: New Orleans emcee Lyrikill made the best album you didn’t hear. Al Great teamed with Heist for a prized release that went under the radar. Longtime Ghostface affiliate Trife Da God took awhile but finally released a solo album which showed he could hold his own. Illogic’s album may be overlooked but the Weightless artist showcased his lyricism with the help of Ill Poetic.

Thomas:  Suicide Music is only 33 minutes long, but L.E.G.A.C.Y.’s dark and twisted rhymes along with Khrysis’ dark backdrops leaves the listener wanting more.  Another banger from start to finish.

Apparently Mental Liberation isn’t Oddisee’s “solo” album. I thought it was…I can’t keep up. Dope nevertheless. http://twitter.com/oddisee/status/7244932988

It’s on my Honorable Mentions for Albums of the year.

Glad to see Trife made it onto two lists. I was waiting for Trife to drop a solo album after hearing his incredible verse on “Guns N’ Razors” off Ghostface’s More Fish album three years ago, and I was not disappointed with this solo debut. “Better late Than Never” is my favorite album of ’09 but was completely slept on. The album had everything: great lyrics, good production, guest appearances, etc. Its a shame that it didn’t receive the exposure it deserved. Cormega’s excellent “Born & Raised” was also completely slept on.

  • JC Poppe

It was nice to see my album in the honorable mention section of Kevin’s picks…because I completely agree. Ha!
