Someone sent me an email telling me about this documentary on PBS the other night and I totally missed it. Thanks to YN for putting up some video footage. This is a series that you producers and crate diggers are sure to love! Hit the jump for the rest of the vids…

Copyright Criminals examines the history and influence of musical sampling, provoking debates about copyright, compensation, and creativity in the age of intellectual property.

Featuring remarks from hip-hop and electronica artists as well as George Clinton and ex-James Brown drummer Clyde Stubblefield, whose works have been heavily sampled.

good looking out Kev; they weren’t playing this on PBS in the DC metro area. Either the Wall Street Journal or the NY Times did an incredible piece last year about this attorney whose practice is built solely on buying (and in a number of cases stealing) music rights from artist and then suing hip-hop artists and their labels.

Like Busta said, “Hip-Hop is paying the bills of people who don’t even like it”

man i watched this and it was very informative. sad really because most of the people we sample that are random unknown are brought to the front and made famous. Growing up during the 90′s when all i heard was sampling from PE to Puffy, i love it because they took a old record my parents were playing and flipped it. i do blends now for that reason but no one will here them except some of my friends because i don’t want to get sued for putting something out. its like they said, we have to hide our talent. and no one mentioned the educational effect it would have on some of these youngsters to learn who musicians really were. Big props for this one Kev

@Jigsaw, I don’t think its premiered in the DMV yet. According to PBS’s website it is supposed to start premiering on WETA this sunday@ 12am, then its will air on other local PBS stations thereafter(MPT, WHUT) http://www.pbs.org/independentlens/broadcast.html.

Great post Kev, anyone who cares about this artform or any sampled/collage based artistic medium should watch this film. Props!
