With Oddisee recently dropping Odd Winter, you know L’Daialogue DiCaprio had to spit over a couple instrumentals for Odd Daialogue 3. The 4 track EP serves a perfect prelude to the Memphis emcee’s project with MIDIMarc, InDAIpedent, which drops this Thursday. Full cover, tracklits & link after the jump.

I wonder how ODDISEE feels about this? Odd Winter ain’t even a week old!

  • Drizz

    yeah I agree w/ NorfCack… that’s a lil too damn soon.

I wonder about that too NorfCack. Not to personally attach L’Daialogue, as we’ve always supported him on the site, but refer to my previous article:

    http://kevinnottingham.com/2009/12/20/instrumental-albums-are-not-free-beats/

Oddisee, what do you think? I know you’re reading… lol

Wow, this came out faster than a commercial radio remix. I just listened to Odd Winter for the first time last night! Cats aint given music a chance to make its own rounds anymore? Is that what the business is? L’Daialogue can rhyme no doubt… and I read his take on these Odd Daialogue releases… but man, this is so close to Oddissee’s release date that he may as well have put him on it. I don’t know what understanding they have with each other so, I really can’t judge.

But what I do have a problem with, is the cover. The first thing I thought of when I saw it was, them late 80′s bootleg tapes. But even them dudes had their color-copying on point. This looks like straight vandalism almost. If he contacted Oddissee for permission on the beat usage, why couldn’t he holla at em for the cover’s Photoshop files? Hell, come with your own for that matter. That’s not being creative son… i’m just saying.

    Yo,

This is L’Daialogue DiCaprio and I would like to address at least some of the concerns I see being brought up around the Odd Daialogue projects.

I would like to again go on record to say that Oddisee is one of the most gifted artists I have seen in a long time. Not a lot of beats make me want to actually get up and write. But his beats always seem to motivate me and his “seasonal” tapes (i.e. Odd Summer, Odd Autumn and Odd Winter) are excellent so much so that it’s become ritual with me to release a tape right after.

Now, I have not ever “officially” promoted these Odd Daialogue mixtapes at all. They make there rounds on the blogs but that’s where it stops with me. Fans hit me up all the time and say that they enjoy them. So, I just keep creating them and the circle (and downloads) keeps going around.

As for the people that would say, ”Hey, the tape just came out. Let it breathe!” I ask by how? You wouldn’t imagine how many people have been put on to the INSTRUMENTAL tapes because of ME rhyming over Oddisee’s instrumentals. I would like to think that I even influenced his decision to put emcees on THIS Odd Winter tape.

More people are going to be exposed to the tape which will always be better for Oddisee in the long run. If you got the instrumental joint first, it’s good to hear a different perspective. If you got my joint first, you’re going to hop on the Oddisee bandcamp page quicker than Tiger Woods on an Applebee’s chick.

As for the people that would say, “What about the artwork? You kinda jacked the cover?” I felt (even when I did the first Odd Daialogue joint) that people would see and react that way. But that’s good. They would feel a certain way about the artwork but once they click into the link of my tape…it’s would be shortcuts to Oddisee’s projects, bandcamp and everything else. The focus always stays on the ORIGINAL project.

So, as I said on the intro Odd Daialogue 2, “promotion goes BOTH ways.” I guarantee that Oddisee’s bandcamp is hopping right now based off of the downloads coming in and me…I’m just a dope emcee that’s paying homage in a way that I feel is respectful and calculated from a PROMOTIONAL perspective.

And with that being said….love to all the people would support. Also, I hope that gives a little more insight to where my head is when I create these derivative bodies of work BASED off of the original Oddisee mixtapes. I’m sure Oddisee sees all and I’m sure that he’s straight off a little emcee from Memphis, Tennessee. He knows what’s happening. People are listening….and that’s always a GOOD thing.

Thanks for chiming in L’D… I’m still curious if Oddisee has a response. I may hit him up on Twitter.

  • http://www.myspace.com/cenzobeatz08 Cenzo Beatz

do that, kevin. im curious too.

the cover says “oddisee music presents….”, so it might be officially allowed!

-> i like both “versions”, the original by oddisee and this remixtape.

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Kevin

I hit Oddisee up… waiting on a response.

Much respect to Mr. DiCaprio for respectfully addressing the masses. So I will respectfully say in the words of Ed Lover “C’Mon Son”! lol. The bottom line is, you have Oddisee Music Presents on your cover and produced by Oddisee. That would be like me saying Kev Brown presents or 9th Wonder or Pete Rock presents when I’ve never even met or spoke to them. On top of the fact that Odd Winter again is not even a week old, it hasn’t even made it’s rounds yet. Also, Oddisee needs your help getting traffic to his site about as much as Jay-Z and Dr. Dre need mine. lol. Bottom line is, you doing it to promote YOURSELF. People might respect that explanation more than trying to pass it off as you doing this to MUTUALLY promote you and Oddisee. C’mon Son!! lol. Still looking forward to seeing what the man himself has to say… Much respect to Oddisee, Diamond District, and Low Budget for keeping not “REAL” but TRUE Hip-Hop going. Blessings to all

I hope everyone notices that L has specifically put UNOFFICIALLY PRESENTS.

  • http://www.oddiseeshouldstillbackslapyouforthis.com NorfCack

@Justin – Yep, but this is still downright blasphemous. lol. But hey, if Oddisee doesn’t have a problem with it, then neither will I because it’s his work being redone. I just agree with the brother earlier who said it lacks originality

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Justin

Well where’s the originality in Royce da 5’9 rocking over a bunch of old Premo instrumentals on the Bar Exam mixtapes? I’m just saying, there’s no right or wrong answer to this question. Some people will think it’s wrong, some won’t. I think it’s cool. Some people aren’t fans of instrumental albums/eps/whatever so now a talented emcee rocks over them, gives some people that might’ve never listened 2 the Odd Winter EP a chance to hear those beats. I mean this isn’t new, this is the 3rd one in the series. If producers (established ones especially) release free beats, you’re basically daring emcees to use them. If this was a retail release I’d be upset w/ someone jacking beats but it’s not.
