After some delay, we’ll finally be getting a new Little Brother album! Phonte & Big Pooh have announced that they will release Leftback on April 20th, scrapping original plans for an EP to create a full album. Hit the jump for the press release which includes details on producers & guests involved in the project.

Favorites of fans and critics alike, Little Brother, the North Carolina duo of Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh, is proud to finally confirm the release of an album people have been waiting on for years. LeftBack, which will be the fourth album of Little Brother’s illustrious career, will be available April 20th via Hall Of Justus.

Little Brother members Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh worked through several versions of the album before locking in the final version of LeftBack. Close followers of Little Brother may already be familiar with the LeftBack title, however, any previously held notions of this album being an EP should be dismissed. Little Brother opted to scrap the EP concept and instead, crafted an album’s worth of material for those who have been waiting patiently for new content. “I didn’t want our last record to be a bunch of second-rate material,” says Phonte. “I wanted to walk away from Little Brother knowing that I gave our fans all that I had to give, and said everything I wanted to say. With LeftBack, I’ve done that.”

Continuing the tradition they set with the critically acclaimed GetBack, Big Pooh and Phonte have enlisted multiple producers for LeftBack, both from within and outside of the Justus League camp. Producers for this album include frequent collaborator Khrysis and GetBack producers Denaun Porter and Zo!, as well as efforts from Symbolyc One and first time Little Brother contributors, J. Bizness, and King Karnov.

In addition to production, Khyrsis will also be contributing guest vocals on the album. Joining the North Carolina producer/MC are Torae, Truck North, Jozeemo and fellow Justus League MC’s Chaundon and Median. Resident crooner Darien Brockington and songstress Yahzarah also supply vocals on the album.

Despite Little Brother’s dominating presence in the hip-hop world since the 2003 release of The Listening, LeftBack will mark the duo’s first album with a true multi-media experience. Accompanying LeftBack will be four official music videos, all shot and directed by Matt Koza, known for his previous work with Foreign Exchange, Rapper Big Pooh, Kam Moye, RJD2, and more. While not customary for a Little Brother release – the group has had only one previous official video, for The Minstrel Show’s “Lovin’ It” – with LeftBack, Little Brother is excited to offer loyal supporters a long-desired visual take on the group’s music. Says Big Pooh, “Three albums, three mixtapes, one video. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense in this day and age. We have always lacked in the visual department, and I think it will be refreshing to finally offer the people those visuals.”

Building on the album’s multi-media offerings, the initial pressing of LeftBack will also feature a limited edition DVD full of exclusive bonus material. Compiled in a documentary format, the bonus DVD will include recent tour footage, as well as exclusive Little Brother footage shot and archived throughout their career. For fans that miss the initial run, a subsequent DVD-only release will also include all official music videos from LeftBack.

Fans can expect further announcements from Little Brother, including tour info and other interesting developments on LeftBack’s road to the release

  • tha_polo

was is mi 9th wonder zumindest 1 beat sollte doch pflicht sein um der alten zeiten willen aba selbst ohne ihn wirds garantiert whoaaaaaaaa

  • http://www.myspace.com/cenzobeatz08 Cenzo Beatz

wow. this is a must have! cant wait.

  • keth n dem

i bet phonte will sing all his verses, since he’s too grown up to rap. this shit just ain’t Little Brother without 9th.

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Thomas

Won’t be the same without 9th participation. I wish Phonte would go back to rapping full time, but that man seems to be in another space right now in his life and his career that singing is the thing for him to do.

Getback was a very dope album without 9th. And like Phonte said on his podcast,”You think you guys want to hear 9th and LB back together, but you really don`t want that”. That` dream is over. Just cherish what they gave to us and let`s keep it movin`. I am excited about Leftback. Can`t wait for the official release.

Disagree with Getback being a dope album. It had some dope tracks, but lacked the cohesion the previous two LP’s had.

  • Mr Cee

I have to agree with Thomas – as much as I love LB without 9th there seems to be a little something missing for me. Getback was a good album if compared to what was out there at the time but when compared to what came before it then it really wasn’t a strong album at all.

I am still very excited as new LB music is always something to look forward too.

If you haven’t got “over” 9th not being involved anymore, that’s just something you gotta deal with. Getback is a solid album, not as good as Listening or Minstrel Show, but it’s good. Every LB mixtape has been dope and those have had minimal 9th input. I’d love to see one more LB album w/ 9th again and maybe that’ll happen in a few years. Whatever issues they had, it takes time to heal wounds. I’m a 9th fan but damn, it seems some people just think EVERYTHING he drops is amazing. He’s got his duds too. It’s not like they’ve got wack producers involved on this. S1 & Khrysis have definitely been a good combo for Phonte & Pooh. Sometimes it feels like people act like LB is the first group to ever break up lol.

Man….I say yeah for good music in general….LB “Leftback”!! I’m ready mane.

L’DAIALOGUE-INDAIPENDENT EP. JAN 28, 2010. PRODUCED BY MIDIMARC
    GO COP THAT!!!

  • http://www.thebackpacked.com Zach P

    i co-sign everything justin said.

all except phonte made it very clear in his most recent podcast that this is defiantly the the last album and “an album with 9th just isn’t going to fuckin happen.”

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Thomas

I’ve gotten over 9th not being a part of the group and I’ve come to realize the music isn’t the same. LIkewise, other rappers don’t sound the same over 9th’s production as Pooh/Tay, IMO. To me 9th gave the group that sound that meshed well with Pooh and Tay’s rhymes. All the producers named above are nice (hopefully Khrysis gets the lion share of the board work), but the album will probably sound like a collection of songs instead of an actual album. However, the last LB album and not even a 9th beat for a skit?

Also, The Chitlin Circuit 1.5 and Separate But Equal had heavy 9th participation compared to And Justice For All. (only talking about the retail mixtapes).

Anyway….I’ll be there at Best Buy on 4/20 and if all else fails I go back to The Listening and Minstrel Show.

  • keth n dem

khrysis bettter sound like “da grind”, “watch me” khrysis. none of that mainstream shit, with heavy synths and no soul. some of my favorite producers have fallen into that hole. (m-phazes, illmind, sybolyc one, black milk & analogic to an extent.)

  • http://www.myspace.com/tkmuzikblix juiceboxjackson

man, keth, I feel you on that…I feel like most of those producers have “kept it real” for the most part but there is def. something missing about them the last couple years…

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Thomas

    @keth n dem

You don’t like Black Milk’s progression from Broken Arrow/Popular Demand to his more Tronic sound? I’m diggin the sound myself.

  • skeme

“getback” was alright but i will still check this out

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Justin

I’m sorry, I just don’t agree with what a lot are saying. It’s like saying Ghostface never made another dope album once he stopped using RZA & the Wu-Elements producers. You’re judging the work before it’s even been released. For all we know, this might end up being the best LB album. I’m not saying that’s likely but what is wrong w/ it not being The Listening or Minstrel Show? It’s just like an artists that makes classics, why does ever follow up have to top that? Just appreciate the work for what it is, if you don’t think it’s Little Brother w/o 9th, then don’t listen.

  • keth n dem

    @thomas –
black milk is still dope. but like khrysis, m-phazes, illmind, i slowly see them gravitating towards a more mainstream sound. i get it though, it must get repetitive making soul sampled beats with a simple boom-bap all the time. but still, those producers have gone from the illest in the underground, to trying to blend a more mainstream sound in their production. some call it evolving, i call it trying to get paid. i dont like it, but i understand it. if you wanna make it a career, you gotta make compromises.

  • http://www.myspace.com/tkmuzikblix juiceboxjackson

@ keth, I know what you’re talking about though…I feel the same way…you fall in love with these producers cause of that “boom bap” sound but then they grow and do some other stuff…

I personally know how this change happens though…I honestly get a little tired of flippin samples and what not…it’s fun to learn different things and make something interesting, whether it sounds “mainstream” or not though isn’t really the intention…you just do what your brain tells you to…

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Jon Garcia

    LB is dope ass fuck
    and with 9th they’re classic
but i mean Phonte is fire
    and Pooh is good too
and i stop everything when i see anything LB related
theyre gonna go down as one of the greatest, no 9th needed

  • J. Rizzle

No matter who’s on production..LB for life…y’all gonna make me go back and dig all of my LB-Justice League sh*t …I also agree with the above comment !!!

  • http://facebook.com/arda.mus Ardamus

to those who tripped on Khrysis, M-Phazes, and etc. using synth sounds, who cares if it sounds mainstream. dope music is dope music.

and i thought Getback was dope. ILLMIND laced LB but everyone was so up in arms about 9th Wonder’s departure, it was overlooked, IMO.

  • Drizz

I agree w/ Ardamus. If it’s dope then it’s dope. Point blank. Sometimes I make beats wit no samples and a lotta times ppl think i still used samples. It’s all on how u flip it. I do however feel that LB lack that certain umph that they had w/ the first 2 albums. Getback was dope, but it seemed to be all over the place to an extent. I’m anxious to see what they present in this new album.

  • bob farmer

Looking forward to some new Little Brother. Like most on here I would have liked to hear some involvement from 9th Wonder but it obviously ain’t happening on this album.
I will still pick it up, hopefully with the DVD attatched, it should be a good listen.

I’m just excited to see some new stuff the HOJ. LB is where it all begin for me, when I first heard the The Listening. Yes, they are not the same without 9th, but Pooh and Phonte still hold their own. Seems like some people are hating on Phonte for singing, but they must have forgotten that he has been doing his singing thang for awhile. Never mind the fact that HE CAN ACTUALLY SING!! More power to him. He is on his grown man shit. If you need a remider that he can still spit on the mic, just listen to TKO on Legacy’s album [which by the way probably one of the most slept on albums of 2009]. The thing that kills me, is the LOOONGGGG drought between albums, whether it’s LB, Black Milk, or Slum Village. You gotta love Illmind because he keeps giving us free albums that are 10x’s better than anytrhing that hits the store shelves. The only complaint I have is having to wait. That’s what sucks about the music business, it’s all about climbing through hoops to put out good music. I will never understand how a song like Lollipop gets air play all day long, and not many people have even heard of someone like Illmind, LB, etc.

Drizz “If it’s dope then its dope. Point blank.”

So no 9th, so my favorite taco show is now closed, so my ex girl has a new guy and even though I would like things to go back things will never be the same. We all (in hip hop) need to move on.

With that being said there are a few people that I would like LB to rap over:
Pete Rock – (I know they have, but I still want more)
Primo – (I know they have, but I still want more)
    Kev Brown
    Floyd The Locsmif
    FS Green

Ok NOW I am going to “Get Bake” to looking for a job
(San Diego does not love graphic designers)

    I am out

I cant wait for this album to drop, of course I’d prefer it if 9th Wonder was on it but LB is committed to make this album some grade A ish. If this album sounds anything like the minstrel show or the listening, then the LeftBack will for sure be classic.

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Thomas

Broken Wax is the Black Milk EP, not Broken Arrow.

  • diggy burrel

man, what about the fact that the new guys contributing to the album are beasts!! Have yall ever heard of King Karnov? Peep These:
