Today’s Sample of the Day comes from Cris Williamson‘s 1971 self-titled album.  I was going to sum up some information on her, but Wikipedia did a great job; so I won’t!

@SeanBlaze that’s what made Dilla so unique, his use of abstract samples and freaked them to be hip hop head bangers. He is Hip Hops’ Yoda ! Peace to the Earth !

Seriously, when I first heard this I was driving… When the sampled vocal came on, I nearly fucking crashed!!!

    And I got the MP3…

Apparently she didn’t want/hated the sample and the use in hip hop and they had to release an alternate version!!

Dilla’s sample prolly turned a thousand people toward her work and brought it back from the dead… His sampling was wholly respectful of the original artist… Damn fool, Cris!

    -hey FlamesYallll,
very true, i am one of those people that loves learning of the origin of samples and getting hipped to the artist.

although, looking at the bio of williamson it does not seem “wrong” for her to turn down the props. 1. she might not be a fan of “hip-hop,” 2. if she got a sample of the album after knowing she was used, without her permission, and dilla putting in verses in the album showing his demonstration of sexism or “just being a man,” and 3. taking without permission…then yeah…some battles are lost sometimes… (wahh wahh)
