I think this is the one track I’ve been looking forward to hearing a remix from, the title track to the album “Mama Said Knock You Out.” Marly Marl samples James Brown’s “Funky Drummer,” The Chicago Gangsters’ “Gangster Boogie,” Sly & The Family Stone’s “Trip to Your Heart” and “Sing a Simple Song.” But the famous loop that you hear in this song comes from “Trip to Your Heart” and we definitely wanna hear that so that’s the only track we are requiring you to sample. Have fun with this one… stay true to the original, but make it your own!
Hit the jump for the complete rules for the contest and the links to the samples you will need for your beat. Final remixes are due next Sunday, March 7th @ 3:00pm Eastern Standard Time. Good luck!
Here’s how the contest will work… for 14 weeks, we will hold a weekly contest… 14 weeks/14 remixes. Each Sunday we will provide the sample to be flipped for the week. You will have one week to complete your remix. Entries will be taken until 3:00pm Eastern Standard Time the following Sunday. For those of you overseas, make sure to get your clocks right. Once all beat entries have been accepted, the judges will take the next week (or more) to listen and comment on those beats. At the end of each week, I’ll post up the judges’ comments, their picks, and the winner for the week.
To submit your entry: Convert your finished remix to MP3 format and upload via the web form posted below. Please include the name you wish to be credited with in the mp3 file name, along with the name of the remix. For example: Tokyo Cigar – Boomin System Remix.mp3. In the file description, please include your contact information so we can email you if you have won. All files uploaded to the system will be displayed below as well and can be streamed for everyone to check out, so there is no need to upload your remix to other file sharing sites and leave links in the comments. DO NOT put your links in the CBOX. A lot of times, producers are eager to upload their remixes as soon as they finish it and realize they forgot to tweak something. Please take the time to make sure you are submitting your final version before you upload to the system. If you do end of making changes to your remix and need to upload another version, make sure you name your mp3 with the word FINAL at the end (ex. G.C. – Boomin System Remix – FINAL.mp3). If you do end up uploading multiple versions of your remix, we can not be held accountable for listening to the wrong remix as your final version.
Oh, which brings me to one more rule… ONLY ONE REMIX PER PERSON ALLOWED
Other than that, just make sure you sample the song provided each week and that you construct your remix so that an emcee will be able to hop on it later on. You can use any other elements you want in your beat (other samples, original instrumentation, etc).
There is no registration process and anyone can enter at anytime.

Posted mine !!! I’m busy this week !!! And the original is too…… DOPE…. Hard to imagine something else with that sample…..
Peace
Buck Oner
I submitted mine. I had to go outside of the sample. I felt it was the only way without getting close to the original. But I had to keep some of the original elements. The original is still one of my favorite beats of all time.
Best Quality esta arriba, shot out to my brother J. Raymond guitar of satellite band thanks 4 the guittar riff’s that was a really fun session.

I give it to BQ,hands down. Real ill man.
Damn Funknox… I had that vibe and build more upon it… Nice summer vibe..
BQ – Too much Guitar Hero in my taste – I like rock, but there’s something stiff in the vibe..
Sonny Wong – Im not sure – The first part sounded broken ?
JUst uploaded my piece. Damn hard to mess with a classic! Peace fam
thanks @ill one, I think that this song in particular is a very strong one with the chorus screamin’, Im gonna knock you ouuut¡¡ I just want to do somethin’ that hit you like that like a slam like a slap, thats the why of the rock/rap version I hope u like it
@isberjg thanks 4 the comments but yours is too much dancehall to me but still good
peace yall’
yo, there were some sick remixes in here so far
@isberg that beat is dope bro i like the flow its MC material
@44th you brought the mellow buzz i was trying to look for but i couldnt find.
@buck oner i thought your week 6 and 7 beats were hype man you are pretty consistent in my opinion this week i wasnt a big fan, it was good but you brought way more fuck you attitude in your last 2 beats. like week 7 was dope man i liked the way you set the intro to this verse section, which was like, an emcee bustin in straight flow, chorus section was sick
Peace everybody, I just uploaded mine. I aimed for a Gang Starr vibe this week. Best wishes to Guru. Can’t wait to hear more beats as the deadline approaches!
Ion
@44th Parallel
first of all thx for the week 7 beat, i appreciate…. Then for this week u r DAMN right …. I explained that Mama Said Knock You Out original was for me a really Dope beat, so punchy and in my differents attempts to make the remix beats I was to close to the original… so i posted this one but i spent less time on it i wasn’t as implicated than in the other week…. cause I couldn’t imagine something different than the original…. So really good analyse…. btw i like what u did in week 6 congrats again !!!!
Peace

@buck oner, I think this is your best remix all over this contest
@BQ I appreciate U put real instruments, sounds so hard, but It’s yours!!!
@Funknox, very original one…
@Isbjerg, never though a dancehall remix of it, good job, too…
peace y’all
What up peoples! Really dope remixes in here this week!
@DoNotFire – It has been Q.U. Hectic on my end with projects, deadlines, and personal things going on in my life, so I haven’t been a part of the remix contest. I appreciate the love though, and I love what cats are bringing!
jejeje the only real instruments are the riffs provided 4 my brother the other sounds are samplin for me, thanks @jim I like yours you know Im a fan of your work
I have heard alot of good remixes. It’s amazing how we all could take the same sample and come with so many different styles.
what i liked most about mama said is that marley marl realized that it was a stereo record, and only sampled one side of the record, leaving out the horns.
@andre from baltimore thats right bro, that’s exactly what I did in the intro of my remix first I turn the sound into a mono, to leave out the horns and after that I turn into a stereo.
