Following the success of his December 2009 EP, Dres of the legendary Queens, NY outfit Black Sheep will drop his long awaited full length LP, From The Black Pool Of Genius, on April 6th. To celebrate the release, Dres is proud to announce the official Prelude Remix Contest. With the contest, Dres is giving aspiring and established producers alike the opportunity to remix all five cuts off Dres’ From The Black Pool Of Genius: The Prelude EP, with the best submission of each of the five tracks being selected by Dres to be released for the official Prelude Remix EP, which will be subsequently released via all major digital retailers.

After downloading a cappella versions of the songs – which can be found through whostheblacksheep.com – contestants will have four weeks to craft their respective remixes. All remixes must be sample-free. While producers can submit only one remix per track, they are allowed and encouraged to submit remixes for each track, making up to five possible remix submissions. In addition to each winner having their version included on the official Remix EP, Dres will also record one 16 bar verse for each of the winning producers on a beat of their choice, and each producer will win a free drum pack from Platinum Loops: the Hip-Hop Drums – Blazin Beats Volume 1 Sample Pack. Winning producers will also receive a signed copy of the From The Black Pool Of Genius: The Prelude EP. Think you have what it takes to catch the ear of legend?

Sample free means no illegal samples that would need sample clearance before release, you are free to use your own created sounds or samples which are royalty free.

    sample-free? sounds fun….NOT

Is the creativity in some people here lacking so much that they can’t possibly think of a way to make a beat with any samples? I mean I love and use samples as much as the next guy but it’s not the only way.

I’m gonna have to agree with Matt here. I was surprised at all the responses complaining that the contest is asking for sample-free production. Leads me to believe that a lot of “producers” out there are simply beatmakers and not real musicians. It’s crazy how technology has killed the integrity of musicianship.

I know I’ve asked it before a while back, but how many “producers” out there actually play an instrument? Or can read sheet music? Do you all know anything about keys and harmony or is it all about beat and tempo? Just curious….

  • Matt

Most of the beats I’ve made so far (for my own practice, haven’t given them to anybody or shared them yet) have been sample reliant, simply because it’s fun, sounds good and true to hip-hop culture. but i learned about “music” (currently in the jazz program at Temple U) before i ever studied hip hop production. i understand why sample reliance is preferred, and i love it as well, but i actually think things like sample clearance laws only helped hip hop to grow rather than be stuck in the same mold. without it there wouldn’t have been great new things like g-funk, the soulquarians, etc. This is turning into a rant but in my opinion purism ruins creativity, having a foot in the jazz world as well it’s equivalent to guys saying electric instruments don’t belong in jazz, which some of the giants of the genre (Herbie, Miles, etc. etc.) have proven utterly false. So yea I plan on entering the contest, and already have some great ideas to try stuff I haven’t tried before.

sample free means, FREEDOM to create, FREEDOM to show what U got, FREEDOM to spread ya LUV!!!…
all producers who luv to sample like me, have to play instruments too, that’s the difference between a beatmaker and a music producer!!..
Just wanted to know the results soon..
    Peace y’all
