Producer/Beat Maker P.R is one of the most diverse producers you may come across. When it comes to the sound he produces, there isn’t one type of style that he hasn’t attempted. His music ranges from different styles of Hip-Hop to all kinds of R&B, and even reaching as far as Funky House & Electro music. His influences include life, sound, film & other genres of music including soul, jazz, Motown, and movie scores.
In 2006, P.R realized he had more to offer then making music in his bedroom for his peers and friends. He worked on his production, spread it around across over the Internet and approached artists online and at shows/clubs. Once he started gaining attention and work, he then moved forward and bought new equipment and once he gained more knowledge, he then got into other programs like Reason & Ableton, all while studying Digital Music at University.
P.R. love for music & the culture, as well as the joy and thrill of making music & experiencing other artists embrace and use it, is what drives him to continuously create and produce.
Where you reppin:
Sydney, Australia.
Introduce yourself:
I’m a 22 year old music producer/student; I’ve been producing for close to 4 years now.
Where did the name P.R come from?
I wish I had an interesting story to tell you about how I got the name P.R, but honestly, it’s just my initials, and the reason I chose my initials was because I kind of thought it was catchy when you said it and it flicks off your tongue easily, especially when people call me P DOT.
Main musical inspirations:
I literally love most genres of music but my main musical inspiration is Hip Hop obviously, but as a producer, I love to listen to types of jazz, soul, and funk, classical, rock, oriental, & other music to draw inspiration for my production.
When did you fall in love with hip hop?
The first time I heard hip hop was when I was around 14, I was at a family friend’s house and he started playing all these cd’s from all these artists I had never heard about, at that time I was into your typical pop/dance music. He showed me Def Squads ‘El Nino’, as well as some albums from DMX, Jay-z, Cypress Hill, Gang Starr, Onyx & others. That day changed my life and my whole perspective on music, I borrowed a couple of his cd’s, went home that day and listened to those albums over and over again, it was just something about the style of rhyming on that style of beat that really grabbed my attention.
Current projects we should be looking out for:
I just dropped my pre-album mixtape ‘Pre-Heated’ [download], as you know, which features 13 tracks from artists all around the globe, in Australia, The States & U.K. Apart from that, me and my label ‘Sound Kamp’ are working on an E.P for Sound Kamp artist ‘The Iron Ghost’, and obviously the main album from me. I have other really exciting projects in the making, but I’m meant to keep under wraps for now, you will hear about it very soon.
Previous work that we should know about:
The majority of my previous production were all for Australian artists, I’ve produced for Australian artists such as, The Movement Family (Cee & Bekah, Notion & Tommy Gunnz), Anecdote (Australian Freestyle Champ), Stiks and lots of underground artists down here. Ive also produced for a couple of RNB artists down here like Israel, Carla Waye, Tessa Destiny & more.
I also produced a track for an artist in the Czech Republic called ‘Emdee’ for his album ‘The Flowtion Picture’ which was one of the highlights for me in 2007/2008.
I have just recently started collaborating with artists out of Australia, for Pre-Heated and for my album in the near future, as well as for many projects in between.
For Producers: What’s your equipment setup like?
I have a pretty standard set up, equipment wise I have a pair of solid speakers, a midi keyboard, a 22 inch monitor, a turntable and a lot of records.
If you had to pick one song that defines your career to date, what song would that be?
Gang Starr – Moment of Truth
Why should the readers and fans give you a shot and listen to your music from here on out?
Because I will guarantee them they will hear nothing but real & diverse music. My passion for producing music is growing stronger everyday, and the projects that I have planned to drop this year are probably the biggest projects I will have done to this day. No matter what, I will keep it 110% and hopefully my listeners can dig/relate & feel what I can provide, as well as share the experience with me.
If you could only take one record on a deserted island with you, what album would that be?
Wow, hard question, but ummm if it was to a deserted island, I would probably want something a bit chilled , diverse but still hip hop, so I would have to say “Little Brother – The Listening”
What’s next for you?
Music, Music & More Music! Keep an eye and ear out for my production, because there’s A LOT coming this year.
Any shout outs or last words?
Shout outs to everyone that has downloaded ‘Pre-Heated’, supported me and have enjoyed the project in general, and of course shout out to you Kevin for posting up ‘Pre-Heated’ and doing this interview with me.
