I’m sure plenty of people have been waiting to hear from DJ Premier & now here’s his official statement on Guru’s death via Live From Headqcourterz. Hit the jump to see what Premo had to say. R.I.P. Guru & Gang Starr Forever.

IT WAS A SAD DAY FOR ME TO GET CONFIRMATION ON THE DEATH OF A MAN WHO I WILL CONTINUE TO CALL MY BROTHER, KEITH ELAM, BETTER KNOWN AS GURU OF THE LEGENDARY GANG STARR.

FROM 1988-2004, WE EXPERIENCED SO MUCH SUCCESS TOGETHER THAT WE WERE ABLE TO EXPAND OUR BUSINESSES INDEPENDENTLY AND GIVE EACH OTHER WHAT GURU CALLED “CREATIVE SPACE”, BEFORE PLANNING TO REUNITE FOR OUR 7TH LP WHEN THE TIME WAS RIGHT. TRAGICALLY, WE WILL NEVER REACH THAT DAY.

I’VE BEEN ASKED TO COMMENT ON A LETTER SPEAKING ILL OF ME WHICH WAS SUPPOSEDLY WRITTEN BY GURU IN HIS DYING DAYS. ALL I WILL SAY ABOUT IT IS THAT OUR TIME TOGETHER WAS BEAUTIFUL, WE BUILT A HIP HOP LEGACY TOGETHER, AND NO ONE CAN RE-WRITE HISTORY OR TAKE AWAY MY LOVE FOR HIM. ONE THING I WOULD NEVER DO IS PLAY AROUND WITH THE TRUTH ABOUT HIS LIFE.

I WILL CELEBRATE GURU’S LIFE… I WILL HONOR HIS MEMORY… I WILL GRIEVE WITH THE ELAM FAMILY OVER HIS UNTIMELY DEATH… I WILL REMEMBER THE GANG STARR FOUNDATION AND ALL OF THE ORIGINAL MEMBERS OF GANG STARR WHO CAME BEFORE ME – WE ALL KNOW EACH OTHER… MOSTLY, I WILL CHERISH EVERYTHING WE CREATED TOGETHER AS GANG STARR, FOREVER. I’M GONNA MISS HEARING HIS SIGNATURE MONOTONE VOICE WHEN HE WALKS IN THE ROOM, BUT THE SONGS WILL ALWAYS BRING IT BACK TO ME….HIS RHYME FLOWS WERE INSANE, AND I WILL NEVER REMOVE HIM FROM MY HEART AND SOUL…….REST IN PEACE TO THE MAN WHO FELT “SATISFACTION FROM THE STREET CROWD REACTION” … I LOVE YOU GOO…….DJ PREMIER

Solar is a cold hearted revisionist that wants to steal their legacy together but it will never happen mane…word up to Primo for the words. He knew what they had. Long live Gangstarr.

Respect To Premo for his statement, I’m happy to see he had so much class as not to go into the Solar and Guru’s deathbed letter issue in too many details, cos at the end of the day all of that is just irrelevant compared to the fact that the world of hip hop lost somebody important and Premo lost somebody ha shared some of the best parts of his life with

Nothin’ but the “Moment of Truth” !!!

Primo is a real gentleman. I strongly doubt Guru had anything to do with that letter. We’re talking about Gangstarr. One of the most revered hip hop groups ever. Both Guru and DJ Premier left a huge influential mark on hip hop, and I’d think Guru would want the public to continue to hear some of the groups classic records. Solaar’s letter made no sence, and to tell the truth, it was quite vexing to read. Like alot of hip hop heads i grew up with Gangstarr’s music, and to this day, gets alot of play on my ipod. R.I.P to Guru.

Glad to finally hear it from him vs. Solar. That Solar statement was disturbing and sounds quite fishy.

I think Solaar is the worse kind of cross between a snake & a leech! That being said, my mom still catches a lot of heat in the family because when my father had his heart transplant 2 of my sisters were not allowed to see my father while he was in intensive care. The problem that my family and anyone mad at Solaar will have to realize is that only the patient can determine who & who can’t visit them…PERIOD! That is the law; like I said when this first happened forget what everyone has said and look at the actions of the doctors & police. You can’t get around that fact!!! “Truth is truth, whether or not you like me” – KRSOne

More importantly, for the Hip-Hop community, this begets the question that will never be answered, “what & why; we love you [Gang Starr] and can’t understand how you [GURU] can make this stand with your health/life in jeopardy?”

My father, because of the stress from arguing with my sisters (and some other family members), told my mother who could come see him. Unfortunately, family members think otherwise even in the face of the evidence (my brothers were there). We will never know why, but under the law, Solaar and the hosptial only did what Guru instructed…whether verbally or thru an “advance directives for medical decisions” document. Both, he & my dad, died and left behind a lot of questions BUT also some great memories as well as lessons to be learned. Its illogical, but knowing what I know about the law and hospital policies & procedures, I refuse to believe the literal content of that letter.

I’ve struggled with this personally and professionally because it was thru Gang Starr (specifically GURU) in ’88 that introduced my family and ‘Cuse University to the fact that my sister was a hell of a DJ. As an editor & writer he helped me with some ideas for articles (“The Lost Art of Freestyling”) as well as provided the audioscape for most of my life. I will always vigorously defend the fact that the Golden Era of Hip-Hop was during the timeframe of ’86-’94 and Gang Starr is one of the countless reasons why – “lemonade was a popular drink and it still is…”

    RIP GURU!!!

  • Jigsaw

and mad props to PREMO for raising above the BS!!!

  • Lukus

Solar is shady whether the letter is legitimate or not, preventing Guru’s own family members from supporting him through his final moments, but more importantly…

    RIP Guru
