With record sales being at an all time low the past few weeks, today is the day that the music industry is hoping those numbers will turn around. Like it or not, Drake’s official debut album drops today and it more than likely will be the number one selling album by the end of the week. How much will it sell? Who knows, but it’s bound to be a great look for hip hop, which currently only has two albums in the Top 20 albums on Billboard. Can Drake save hip hop? Can he break trends like he did with last year’s mixtape  So Far Gone?  Look out for our review dropping later today.

Of course today isn’t all about Drake. Album’s I’ll personally be coppin are the new ones from Nappy Roots and Kero One. Hit the jump to see the rest of the albums dropping today…

What albums are you coppin today?

Hate it or love it but I copped Drake’s album…

none of these albums really stand out. i have the Drake album and it is what it is… IMO its not a great album. Its very dreary overall. kinda like a down tempo portishead vibe w/ bad singing mixed in. idunno if it’ll save hip-hop b/c its more like an r&b album. just wasnt feelin most of it.

Definitely have to support Drake. This is a moment, whether you are behind him or not, to make your voice heard threw dollars. Money talks. The only way the state of music will change is if we support the ‘alternative’ hip-hop. If not, we’ll be flooded with trap music for life and more great artists like Kam Moye will retire.

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Kevin

EXACTLY Ken! I’m glad someone gets it.

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Justin

So to help Kam Moye I should buy Drake’s album? That makes NO sense. I’ll just be getting the Nappy Roots LP.

  • http://drakeblackmon.bandcamp.com Drizz

Thank u Justin… my thoughts exactly.

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Kevin

Is that really what you all took from that? smh

  • http://drakeblackmon.bandcamp.com Drizz

Maybe that wasn’t what u were aiming for Kev, but honestly wack is wack. I’m not gonna support somethin i aint feelin just b/c its a good look to someone else. Hopefully u don’t misinterpret that. peace!

I think what Kev and Ken are trying to say is that, if you like the Drake album you should really go out and cop it. It’s important for Hip Hop to stay relavant. If a major artist like him isn’t succesful with his album, label won’t sign any hip hop artists. There is no 2nd league without a first league. I hope that made sense, lol.

Obviously I’m exaggerating. My point is buying Drake’s album has nothing to do with changing MY vision of hip hop for the better. Just because he’s doing something different doesn’t mean it’s good. I don’t enjoy his music so why would I buy it? So we’re not “flooded with trap music” as it was said? Then we’ll just be flooded with the new trend: the sing-song rap which is where we’re going. B.o.B, Kid Cudi & Drake are “blowing up” with that style and thats gonna be the thing for awhile. Is trap music really that big anymore? I mean even the guys people hate (Gucci Mane, Wacka Flacka) aren’t big cause they make trap music, it’s cause they make dance songs for the club/radio.

Drake’s gonna do his numbers cause he’s tapped into an audience that buys albums. He’s got the teen crowd and that’s good for him, but that’s not my lane. Where was the uproar when MURS for instance had his major label debut? Was there this plea for “we gotta buy this to make difference”? I don’t remember that happening.

Yeah, I am going to have to agree with Justin. The listener/consumer is the driving force behind hip hop and music in general. I don’t want to sacrifice some of my coin to an artist who first makes music that I don’t like, and secondly just to make a point of keeping an hip hop artist in the Billboard charts. With that said we all have different tastes and motivations. If you personally like Drake, buy his album, don’t just keep bootleg copies. However, if you don’t like it, don’t buy it. If I was to cop his album, it would just be hypocritical, because I don’t like his music. It’s a direction I definitely don’t think hip hop should be going (personally).

@Kev, my issue is and has been – why does hip-hop need to be saved and when should we expect its demise? Trust me – Drake is not and I repeat is not the savior of hip-hop! Before I go any further let me state the following: Too Short, Luke/2Live Crew, Master P, Wu-Tang Clan…major moments in hip-hop that occured in spite of ZERO radio play and major lable support. More importantly, once the audience validated the quality of their music with their dollars – then the lables came calling…with wallets wide open.

Now back to Drake. I understand your rationale Kev and Carsten makes sense to a lesser extent but I’ve seen this cycle too many times to agree with your tactics.

I can’t remember if it was Meth or Red but one of them said “I scream, U scream – when did the underground become mainstream”

  • Jigsaw

Regardless of where you stand – Justin is right!

  • http://kevinnottingham.com Kevin

No one here is “right”.. it’s all a matter of opinion. I would never suggest someone to buy an album from an artist they do not like, cuz I wouldn’t do that either. Like Drizz said, “wack is wack” and it’s all a matter of opinion. I simply wish people would stand up to their original opinion and not hate on someone because they’ve “gone mainstream.” Obviously, I’m talking to everyone. There are people who’ve not liked Drake from the beginning and that’s cool. His music is not for everyone. I never dug Kid Cudi or BoB.

At any rate, my point is this is a huge day for hip hop and if you dig the music, support it. Huge how? Huge in the sense that we have an artist that we’ve following from the ground up in the underground hip hop community and he’s finally getting his shot. It rarely happens when the mainstream community embraces an artist that “we” have been listening to for years. How many times have you told a friend of yours that only listens to the radio to “check out this cat.” I was telling those friends of mine to listen to Drake years ago and they wouldn’t give him a chance. Now they love them some Drake! has me gloating over here with a bunch of “I told you so’s”. Feel me?

I like that “Light Up” song but Im not coppin Drake’s album. He gon do his numbers just off the women supporting him. I do dig some of his music tho. Like his honesty and punchlines.

I put in my pre order at ughh.com for June Marx of Twin Perils “Body of God”. Now there’s a dude that ca really use the support and his beatgame and rhymes are crazy…

Im all about supportin the independents. I still don’t understand how Roc Marciano didn’t chart his first week of sales. That REALLY disappointed me man cause everybody say thats a contender for album of the year…. but I did cop that Wu Massacre album once I found out it was on Def Jam. I figure Def Jam don’t put out music like that and thats a situation where people SHOULD support… even tho Wu Massacre coulda been a lot better…

  • Nice.

We should stand up and support our favorite artists, but also due to sales suffering due to the availability of their shit on the net for free.. no matter how good it is if a person can get it for free ..what u think they’re gonna do…GET IT FOR FREE !!! no matter who/whom the artist is. It’s the music world we live in of today..gone are the days of big sales numbers like 650,000 and up. – that’s my take
