In stores today is the new album from Boog Brown and Apollo Brown, The Brown Study. Already one of my favorite albums this year, I had to hit up Boog Brown and give her the KN Artist Spotlight treatment. Check her short bio below and hit the jump for a little Q&A…

Currently based in Atlanta, Detroit-native Boog Brown is not only an emcee, poet, and publisher, but she describes herself as a “lover, fighter and artist.” With tracks like “The Essence,” “Dope Girl Magic,” and “The Mirror,” Brown collaborated with noted hip hop artists and producers including Illastrate, Rita J, Aarophat, Apollo Brown, Invincible,and 14KT, who describes her voice as “the illest.” According to 14KT, “Boog displays truth, confidence, style and a strong sense of integrity in hip hop.” She describes the forthcoming Brown Study LP, a collaborative project with producer Apollo Brown, as the “most vulnerable” she has been musically.

Where you reppin:

Detroit ALWAYS!! I love Atlanta too and love that I am loved here but home is home!

Introduce yourself:

Peace this is Boog Brown aka The Boogie Monsta, aka Boogie Woogie Wonderful and the pleasure is mine!

Where did the name Boog Brown come from?

In college my BFF Kamilah use to call me LBoogie then Boogie then Boog so it kinda stuck with me so when I started rhyming my friend Wood was like yo you should add Brown to your name, that would be fly. I liked the idea so I rolled with it.

Main musical inspirations:

Life is always the Inspiration.

When did you fall in love with hip hop?

When I bought ATLiens by Outkast. I related to the thought process in a sense. Before I would observe it, listen a little but I was busy playing violin, listenin to old R&B and jazz that my parents had. But that album made me want to explore and listen.

Tell us about your new album, The Brown Study. What was the creative process behind building the album and how did the collaboration with Apollo Brown come about?

Ha funnily enough, on twitter It was suggested that Kev Brown, Apollo Brown and I do a UPS (“what can brown do for you?”) joint. Not sure what the haps wit Kev was but I kinda thought it was, you know just more shit talking on twitter. When I found out MMG was serious I got on board and Apollo is dope so I was like “shiiit, I cant lose” so why not. The creative process was different tho, in that there was a pressure there I had never felt before. It was and continues to be a great learning experience.

Previous work that we should know about:

Grind Season Vol. 1. All tracks produced by the incomparable Illastrate unless noted otherwise.

If you had to pick one song that defines your career to date, what song would that be?

GRIND SEASON!!!!! “stay on my grind like I neva ate”

If you weren’t doing music, what would your occupation be?

I would be a wife and mother or a chef!

Why should the readers and fans give you a shot and listen to your music from here on out?

Oh I don’t know. Ha that’s a funny question never even thought about it…because they want to? Does that count as an answer? Lol!

If you could only take one record on a deserted island with you, what album would that be?

That’s an impossible question to answer but it would surley depend on the island. Lol!

Tell us one thing that very few people may know about you.

I cook a MEAN pot of greens. With or without meat.

What’s next for you?

A gang-o-projects, too many to name but Dope Girl Magic is one of them heavily involving Illastrate and The Boogie with the homie Lex Boogie from the Bronx.

Any shout outs or last words?

Shout out to YOU!!!!!!!!!!! Enjoy yourself!

Boog’s consistent lyrically and i dig the fact that she remains a woman in the booth. “Grind Season” is so dope and timeless to me… “Brown Study” is just icing on the cake. You give that chick a dope beat and it’s a wrap. Big up to her and i hope she stays with it.
