Fifteen weeks strong of DJ Premier Wednesday.  I’m going to keep it short as this week’s sample comes from The Lox sophomore album, We Are the StreetsPremier is a genius as the chop is masterful and Jadakiss sounds great over his production.

Hit the cut for info and link. Props to SC.

Joe Budden: Russian Roulette

by Thomas on November 18, 2009 · 3 comments

Joe Budden has skills and at his best he drops dope bars (Mood Muzik 2: MM2 & MM3), but some of his comments and actions have overshadowed that skill set.  He’s been known in the past for those introspective and heart felt rhymes, but the nonsense has taken front in center IMO.  Just saying.

Joey goes in over Rihanna’s single of the same name just discussing what’s on his mind in a tasteful way.

Link from 2DB.

Olubowale Akintimehin aka Wale dropped his solid debut album Attention Deficit this past Tuesday (11/10). The feedback on the internet has been mostly positive from what I’ve seen with some disappointed fans here and there. This post isn’t about the review of the album (read review), but the samples.

The set is more than likely incomplete as all of these samples come from the linear notes and we know complete sample listing are rarely indicated in linear notes.  The sample plays good together from the classic Kool and the Gang jam “Summer Madness” to often used Spinners track from The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh soundtrack.

As always if we missed something hit the comments with the missing information.  Everything after the cut.

Happy birthday to Russell Jones!  Today we are giving you all a birthday gift in his honor, the O.D.B.E.P..  I purchased this EP from the old CDNow online music store back in 98/99 while I was in college.  In hindsight I’m not sure how official this “EP” is, but being a Wu-fanatic I needed all things Wu related regardless of price.

The “EP” was attractive because it had “Don’t  U Know, Pt. II,” so it was nothing for me to drop the $20-30 (I think) to get this joint.  The $20-30 I paid for it is nothing compared to what it’s trying to be sold for now.

Tracks were ripped from the CD.  Tracklist and links after the cut.

OlDirtyBastard-pic-1

If you are a Wu-Tang Clan fan you know this song.  If you’ve been to any underground type club/party you’ve heard this song.  When this song is played the head starts to nod, neck starts to snap, and the face is contorted a little.  Probably of the the Clan’s best songs solo/group.

“Brooklyn Zoo” is a banger and still sounds fresh even thought it’s fourteen  years old.  This is Dirty at his best, ish talking, dropping some 5% knowledge and flexing his mic skills.  Some many quotable from this song:  “But I got stacks that’ll attack any wack host/ Introducin, yo FUCK that nigga’s name!” Pure genius on Dirty’s part.

Hit the cut for stream and lyrics (OHHLA).

“Life Changes” from Wu-Tang Clan’s heavily slept on 8 Diagrams [sample set] album was a beautiful tribute to Russell Jones.  All of the clan except Ghostface contribute a dope verse to AsonDeck’s verse  has always been the stand out for me because of the pain, hurt, and shame he felt because of Dirty’s death and what he didn’t do to help ODB when he needed it.  I hope Lil’ Wayne’s people are taking note.

Free-Cannon-fr(3)

Freeway, Jake One, and Don Cannon link up for The Beat Made Me Do It mixtape.  The mixtape is a prelude to the full length album between Jake One and Freeway, The Stimulus Package dropping 2/16/10. I haven’t listened to it yet, but their past collaborations have been dope so this shouldn’t be any different.

Hit the cut for the front/back cover, tracklist, and link (2DB).

Paying tribute to Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s life and music will be taking place until Sunday, which happens to be his born day. Highlighting some of Dirt Dog’s lyrics is a must over the next three days as well.

“Raw Hide” is one of my favorites off of his debut album as it has Dirt, Rae, and Method Man throwing sharp darts over RZA’s loop and dusty drums. Even thought Method Man almost steals the whole song from Dirt and Rae with the hook; Dirt sets the tone with his sing song intro and lines like “I came out my momma pussy—I’m on warfare” or “You bound to catch AIDS or something/not sayin I got it, but nigga if I got it you got it.”  Simplistic in nature, but playful and humorous as well.  When listening to these verse’s it makes me wonder what’s going on in his mind to say THAT?  I’ve always loved the unpredictability and seemly randomness of his rhymes. I believe the first two verse’s from “Raw Hide” highlight those positive attributes.  There is truly no father to his style.

I couldn’t decide between the first or second verse so I put up both.
Hit the cut for the lyrics and stream of the song. Lyrics from OHHLA.

DJ Premier: Welcome 2 G-Dom

NYG’z were the first act signed to DJ Premier’s Year Round Records dropping their debut album in 2007.  The group consist of Shabeeno (aka Shiggy Sha) and Panchi and have been down with Premier/Gang Starr since 95; making appearances on Moment of Truth and The OwnerzPremier produced the title track to the album that has that knock to it, but a smooth groove at the same time.

Hit the cut for the info and link to the goodness.

*sidenote* any request?

Wale’s debut album Attention Deficit drops today and is a solid offering from the D.C./MD native.  His third single “Pretty Girls” from the album features Gucci Mane and Weensey (from BackYard Band) on the hook.  The single has been getting good airplay on the local stations because of the infectious beat and catchy hook.  That catchy hook comes from The Moments song; “Girls” off their 1975 album Look at Me.

Hit the cut for the link and info.  I’ve included both versions of “Pretty Girls” in the link.  Enjoy!

Before Sha Stimuli [read interview] dropped his dope debut album he flooded the internet with a mixtape recently every month  from December 2008 to January 2009 (I think).   We posted several tracks in anticipation of his album, My Soul to Keep a few weeks back and this mixtape was requested.  This was the fourth installment in the series, Sha and DJ Victorious released.

Hit the cut for one of the best mixtapes in the series.

Not only does Tommy II Gunz produce tracks, but he is a rapper as well.  Tommy II Gunz comes from Texas and is one of our loyal readers and Remix Contest participant.  He sent me this link via Twitter today to his new song presumably from his I Am Mixtape dropping 11/16.

Song isn’t bad at all.  What y’all think?  Hit the comments to leave II Gunz some feedback.

Sha_Stimuli-Bklyn

Producer Beat Butcha samples Nina Simone’s “Hey Buddy Bolden” for Sha Stiumuli’s “What’s Wrong With That? (Wake Up The World)” featuring Torae.  The sample gives Sha and Torae the canvas to talk about street credibility in Hip Hop and the effect it has on Hip Hop’s audience especially the babies.

Sha’s album My Soul to Keep is good music from top to bottom.  Grab it if you haven’t already [cop here].

Hit the cut for the info and link.
