On August 27, 1990 LL Cool J teamed up with legendary producer Marley Marl to create one of my favorite hip hop albums of all time, Mama Said Knock You Out. “Don’t call it a comeback!” 20 years later, we here at KevinNottingham.com have gathered producers and emcees from all over the globe to remix a classic.

It all started 8 months ago with a weekly remix contest challenging producers to flip the original samples Marley Marl used to create the production for the album. 15 weeks later, the winning beats were chosen and the quest to find the right emcees to hop on these joints began.

After 8 months of hard work, I believe we have an album that greatly pays tribute to the original. Special thanks goes out to DJ Blacquestarr, DJ Grain, and Thomas (of KN.com) for helping with the contest. Thank you also to all the producers and emcees involved in this project… job well done. Last but not least, thanks to LL Cool J and Marley Marl for laying the blueprint and providing the inspiration for making this remix album possible.

MSKYO Remix Project: Week 14 Winner

The producer portion of our Mama Said Knock You Out Remix Project officially came to a close last week and now the judges have submitted their picks for the final beat on the album. Now that we have all the instrumentals done, we will be getting emcees to rhyme over the beats. Expect the full project to be finished and released (hopefully) by the end of August. Mama Said Knock You Out Emcee Contest: Week 1

For the past 14 weeks, producers from all over the globe have come to KevinNottingham.com to remix a classic album: LL Cool J’s Mama Said Knock You Out. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the release of this hip hop classic, we will be putting out a remix album based off the remixes that won our contest. We have the winning instrumentals; now all we need are some emcees to spit over them! Starting today and every Sunday for the next 14 weeks, we will be holding our first ever emcee remix contest. So if you rap, now’s the time to be heard.

To kick things off, we will be recreating the opening song to the album, “The Booming System.” The winning remix was produced by Buck Oner and it’s a banger! You have one week to put together your final song, which must be uploaded here by Sunday, April 25th @ 3pm Eastern Daylight Time.

Here’s how the contest will work… for 14 weeks, we will hold a weekly contest… 14 weeks/14 songs. Each Sunday we will provide the instrumental to be used for the week. You will have one week to complete your song. Entries will be taken until 3:00pm Eastern Daylight Time the following Sunday. For those of you overseas, make sure to get your clocks right. Once all entries have been accepted, the judges will take the next week (or more) to listen and comment on the songs. At the end of each week, I’ll post up the judges’ picks, and the winner for the week.

To submit your entry: Write and record to the instrumental provided. Subject matter is up to you, but this is technically a remix album, so pay homage to the original. Judges will take into consideration your lyrics, flow, sound quality and chorus/hook. Convert your finished song to MP3 format and upload via the web form posted below. Please include the name you wish to be credited with in the mp3 file name, along with the name of the remix. For example: MC Dave – Boomin System Remix.mp3. In the file description, please include your contact information so we can email you if you have won. All files uploaded to the system will be displayed below as well and can be streamed for everyone to check out, so there is no need to upload your remix to other file sharing sites and leave links in the comments. DO NOT put your links in the CBOX. Please take the time to make sure you are submitting your final version before you upload to the system. If you do end of making changes to your song and need to upload another version, make sure you name your mp3 with the word FINAL at the end (ex. MC Dave – Boomin System Remix – FINAL.mp3). If you do end up uploading multiple versions of your song, we can not be held accountable for listening to the wrong track as your final version.

Oh, which brings me to one more rule… ONLY ONE ENTRY PER PERSON ALLOWED

Mama Said Knock You Out Remix Project: Week 14

Here we are… the last week of the producer portion of our Mama Said Knock You Out Remix Project! This is your last chance to get your beat on our Remixtape. Starting next week, we will take all of the winning beats and use them in the emcee portion of the Remix Project. If all goes smoothly, the final remixtape should be ready for release by the end of August.

For the last week, the track we will be redoing is “The Power of God” — the final song on Mama Said Knock You Out. ~~There are no known samples to this song, so~~ For the final week we are leaving this one WIDE OPEN. Sample whatever you want or sample nothing at all… just give us your best beat! I think the title of the song says it all in terms of the theme for your beat. Give us something powerful, something majestic! If God were to reign havoc on us all, what music would be playing? Go with that and good luck!

DO NOT put your links in the CBOX. A lot of times, producers are eager to upload their remixes as soon as they finish it and realize they forgot to tweak something. Please take the time to make sure you are submitting your final version before you upload to the system. If you do end of making changes to your remix and need to upload another version, make sure you name your mp3 with the word FINAL at the end (ex. G.C. – Boomin System Remix – FINAL.mp3). If you do end up uploading multiple versions of your remix, we can not be held accountable for listening to the wrong remix as your final version.

Other than that, just make sure you sample the song provided each week and that you construct your remix so that an emcee will be able to hop on it later on. You can use any other elements you want in your beat (other samples, original instrumentation, etc).

Edit: My man Steven just hit me up and told me that the sample is James Brown’s “Think.” Feel free to sample it if you want… or don’t. We’re still gonna keep this one open!

Mama Said Knock You Out Remix Project: Week 13

We’re down to the final two weeks of the producer portion of our Mama Said Knock You Out Remix project. To all you emcees out there, get ready, cuz we’ll be starting up our emcee contest in just a couple of weeks! For this week, we’ll be remixing the 13th track off the album, “Illegal Search.” Just about every song on Mama Said Knock You Out sampled a James Brown song, but you all haven’t had to use one in your remix since Week 1. Well this week you all will get to sample “Mind Power” from the Godfather of Soul.

Ah, another one of my favorite tracks from Mama Said Knock You Out. “6 Minutes of Pleasure” was the fifth and final single released from the album and uses the infectious sample from Isaac Hayes’ “Ike’s Mood,” which has since been sampled in countless other songs. Can’t wait to hear what you do with this one!

Mama Said Knock You Out Remix Project: Week 11

As we get closer to the end of the producer portion of our Remix Project, we come to another one of my personal favorite tracks from the album: “To Da Break of Dawn.” This track was the official fourth single to the album Mama Said Knock You Out and was also featured in the classic Kid N Play movie, House Party. A diss to LL rivals MC Hammer, Ice T, and Kool Moe Dee, the song ranked #11 on XXL’s Top 20 diss songs of all time. Producer Marly Marl sampled James Brown’s “Funky President,” Maceo & All the King’s Men’s “Got to Getcha,” and Pleasure’s “Joyous.” You can use any or all to craft your beat, though we are requiring you to sample “Joyous.”

Mama Said Knock You Out Remix Project: Week 9

On Week 9 of our Mama Said Knock You Out Remix Project, we get to the first sample free track from the album, “Milky Cereal.” Initially I thought about leaving this track out of the contest, but it’s such a great song. So what we’re gonna do this week is leave the creativity up to you. Use whatever you want to make this remix… but remember, it IS a remix, so we want to stay true to the original. We’ve included the OG “Milky Cereal” here if anyone wants to sample it or use it as reference. There’s no telling what the judges will decide to pick this week… we may decided to pick the beat that best duplicates the original. Who knows! This week should be fun for everyone though.

Mama Said Knock You Out Remix Project: Week 8

I think this is the one track I’ve been looking forward to hearing a remix from, the title track to the album “Mama Said Knock You Out.” Marly Marl samples James Brown’s “Funky Drummer,” The Chicago Gangsters’ “Gangster Boogie,” Sly & The Family Stone’s “Trip to Your Heart” and “Sing a Simple Song.” But the famous loop that you hear in this song comes from “Trip to Your Heart” and we definitely wanna hear that so that’s the only track we are requiring you to sample. Have fun with this one… stay true to the original, but make it your own!

Mama Said Knock You Out Remix Project: Week 7

So we are about halfway through the beat portion of our Mama Said Knock You Out Remix Project. I think it’s going quite well! This week, we’ll be remixing “Farmer’s Blvd.” The seventh track on the album samples Willie Hutch’s “Brothers Gonna Work it Out” and “Mack Man,” Barry White’s “I’m Gonna Love You Just A Little More, Babe,” and Billy Preston’s “I Wrote A Simple Song.” Marley Marl went IN on this one and I’m sure you will too. The main sample we want you to use in your beat this week is “Mack Man,” but feel free to incorporate any of the others. Remember, there are no acapellas in this contest. Beats only, and then we’ll get some emcees to rap over them.

Here’s how the contest will work… for 14 weeks, we will hold a weekly contest… 14 weeks/14 remixes. Each Sunday we will provide the sample to be flipped for the week. You will have one week to complete your remix. Entries will be taken until 3:00pm Eastern Standard Time the following Sunday. For those of you overseas, make sure to get your clocks right. Once all beat entries have been accepted, the judges will take the next week (or more) to listen and comment on those beats. At the end of each week, I’ll post up the judges’ comments, their picks, and the winner for the week.

Oh, which brings me to one more rule… ONLY ONE REMIX PER PERSON ALLOWED

There is no registration process and anyone can enter at anytime.

Mama Said Knock You Out Remix Project: Week 6

For Week 6 in our Mama Said Knock You Out Remix Project, we are remixing “Chessy Rat Blues.” The original song samples from Kool & the Gang’s “Soul Vibrations,” and Maceo Parker’s “Maceo” and “Better Half.” For this remix, we are only requiring you to sample Kool & the Gang’s “Soul Vibrations,” but feel free to use the other samples to craft your beat.
