As the second week of out Mama Said Knock You Out Remix Project comes to a close, the judges have come to an agreement on the winner of the week one remix of “The Boomin System.” But before we get into the results, let me introduce you to our four judges who will be listening to these remixes week after week:

  • DJ Blacquestarr: host of the Halftime Hip Hop Show on WUOG 90.5fm in Athens, GA
  • DJ Grain: part time contributor here at KevinNottingham.com and DJ of the Movement Fam, based out of Atlanta, GA
  • Thomas: contributor here at KevinNottingham.com, based out of Maryland
  • Kevin: owner of KevinNottingham.com, based out of Miami, FL

The way the judging will work is each judge will list their Top 5 remixes. Some of us may make comments, others are probably just too busy. Out of those Top 5, the one with the highest placement out of all four judges will be the weekly winner and their remix will be included in the final project.

Don’t call it a comeback! That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, the weekly KevinNottingham.com remix/beat contest is back for 2010! It’s been way too long since we’ve done one of these, but I figure with a new year and a new decade it was time to pay tribute to another classic. Similar to our previous remix contests where we remixed Illmatic and The Blueprint, we are now preparing for the 20th Anniversary of the release of the LL Cool J / Marly Marl classic Mama Said Knock You Out.

Each week, for the next 14 weeks, we will provide you with the original sample Marly Marl used to create each track from the album. You will take that song and your skills, and sample it into a brand new creation… a remix, if you will. In previous contests, we have provided you with the acapella to use in your remix. This project will not be using the acapellas from Mama Said Knock You Out. Instead, after we complete the 14 weeks of our beat contest (some time in April), we will start up an emcee contest for aspiring emcees to rap over the winning remixes. The finished project will be released in August 2010, just in time for the album’s 20th anniversary!

Since we released Cymarshall Law’s new single, “Harder Than Thou,” last week, the buzz has been crazy. Produced by D-Slaps, with cuts by DJ JS-1, Cymarshall goes in over the track, um, harder than thou!

Now, we’re giving YOU a chance to put your own spin on the record. Download the acapella to “Harder Than Thou” and see if you can craft a beat just as dope, if not better than the original. The winning remix will be chosen by Cymarshall Law himself and will be included in an upcoming HiPNOTT Records mixtape being sponsored by HipHopDX. The mixtape will be a sampler of exclusive tracks from artists on HiPNOTT Records 2010 roster, as well as a few special guest appearances from some well known emcees. More information on the mixtape will be put out in the coming weeks, but this is something that you will definitely want to be a part of!
