Diggin' In Da Crates

salvation-wide

Skyzoo’s The Salvation is one of my favorite albums of the year so far… with production from 9th Wonder, Illmind, Just Blaze, Black Milk, and Nottz you know the beats are hot and there has to be some great samples behind them. So you know we would eventually get around to compiling a sample set.

There are still a handful of samples yet unknown, but thanks to the good people at the-breaks.com and rapcredits.com I was able to compile a good majority of the samples here. Most of these are really, really great soul tracks. The one gem on here that I really love is Stark Reality’s “Dreams.” It’s one of those epic 8 minute tracks. Check em all out after the cut…

Props to E.J. again for starting this set and sending it over a few months ago. I’ve filled in the blanks as much as I can and feel this one is as ready to go as ever. This sample set is extra special for two very important reasons, which I’ll get into below.

Sampling has not only been the foundation of hip hop as we know it, but it has sort of been it’s achilles’ heel, if you will. Today you hear of artists getting sued left and right for not clearing their samples. In the 80s, when hip hop was not as mainstream, it was easy to get away with. Enter this album, Biz Markie’s I Need A Haircut. This album single-handedly forever changed the hip hop industry because of the track “Alone Again.” Biz was served a lawsuit by Gilbert O’Sullivan, because of “Alone Again” featuring an unauthorized sample from his song “Alone Again (Naturally).” The resulting case was Grand Upright Music, Ltd. v. Warner Bros. Records Inc., in which the court granted an injunction against the defendants to prevent further copyright infringement of the plaintiff’s song by sampling and referred them for criminal prosecution. The judgment changed the hip hop music industry, requiring that any future music sampling be preapproved by the original copyright owners to avoid a lawsuit.

The second reason that this sample set is important is because we finally found the full length version of the classic breakbeat “Outside Love” by Brethren. This sample can be found in numerous sets of ours, as it has been used by Pete Rock, DJ Premier, and A Tribe Called Quest. Previously, we only had a 30 second snippet of the breakbeat, but within minutes of putting this set up I came across a full version vinyl rip.

Needless to say, this sample set is one that should be in your collection.

I’ve had some time off this week, so I’ve been trying to finish up some old shit and bang out some new shit. E.J. sent me this sample set for Dilated People’s The Platform a few months ago. I just finished verifying all the samples and found a handful more to add to what E.J. sent over. I know a lot of people have been requesting some Alchemist samples, so I know you’ll like this one. It’s not quite complete though. I know there are a few sample sources missing; so if anyone can fill in any blanks, leave a comment.

This sample set has some nice gems though. Check out Bill Cosby’s version of the Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”… classic!

I almost feel as if we’ve gotten off our sample game for a minute. I guess it’s just been really tough to keep up with the new releases and finding the credits for EVERY sample used. More often than not, not all samples are listed in the linear notes so it takes someone with a really good ear to track down every single ingredient that makes up an album. Such is the case with the latest Ghostface Killah joint, Ghostdini. Thomas and I have managed to track down the samples listed in the credits of the album, but I know there are more samples than this. So for now, here’s what we got!

Sample of the Day: Jay-Z Edition

by Thomas on September 10, 2009 · 4 comments

jay24

It wouldn’t be right for us to have a Jay-Z week without some samples.  Between  us, Ivan, Goon, and YN all of Jay’s albums have received the sample treatment.  These are loose samples from some  unreleased songs, soundtrack cuts, and songs Jay has been featurned on.  A couple of dope tracks on here…see “Hogan’s Thing.”

Hit the cut for the tracklist and link.

Kingdom Come: Original Samples

We didn’t complete this set, but assisted Alex (Goon) with this one in May 2008.  I just wanted to link to the original post, but all of the links are dead.  So I upped the set since I wasn’t able to get a hold of Alex (of course I sent an email at the last minute).  I added an additional track for “Do You Wanna Ride” that wasn’t included in the OG set.  Peep what Goon originally said about the album/set:

“I only started on this a few days ago but thanks to a major assist from Thomas, it’s finito. This is probably Jay’s worst recieved album even though, in my opinion, it’s faaaaaaar better than volume 2 and on par with volume 3 and Blueprint 2, but obviously below his best. Much of the album is played so only about half the tracks use samples, the obvious ones being the “Superfreak” sample on “Kingdom Come” and the “Shaft in Africa” sample on “Show Me…” So Between Kev, Ivan, and I, we’ve done sets for all of Jay’s albums (unless someone is REALLY dying to hear a sample set for “Street’s is Watching”). Hooray for us…or not.” [page]

imobilarity_wide

Immobilarity (I Move More Officially by Implementing Loyalty and Respect in the Youth) is Raekwon’s sophomore album that had mad hype, but was a HUGE disappointment to many.  I remember in College my roommate and I skipped class to head to the Blockbuster music store to cop this joint.  By the time we got back to the room….faces were TIGHT.

Putting this set together I listened to the album again…not really THAT bad…follow me.  The lyrics are there..peep “Live From New York,” “Yae Yo,” “Casablanca,” and “Sneakers,” etc.  However, the BAD tracks were TERRIBLE.  Just see “Raw,” “All That I Got Is You Pt. II,” “Fuck Them,” and “Pop Shit.”

The major problem with this album is the absence of RZA’s board work (or the Wu-Elements) and his partner in rhyme Ghostface Killah.  Not sure what was going on with Rae and RZA/Ghost, but the void is felt.  The tracks on Imm… dont’ give Rae’s lyrics the proper canvas to shine.  The beats seem hollow to me.  The hard hitting drums, percussion, numerous layers found on OB4CL are replaced by simple loops and weak drums.  Ghost is replaced by the god awful American Cream Team sans Lord Superb?

So…we have the sample set.  Big difference from the OB4CL samples just off of what was used.  We are probably missing some as most of the samples contained in the set were in the linear notes.

We are missing Jimmy’s Stewart’s “Castle of Spain.”  I couldn’t find a Youtube clip of the song to rip nor could I find the mp3 to buy.  So if anyone has it…hit the comments.  Also, tyring to ID all of the vocal samples in “Sneakers” as well.  I have three.

Everything after the cut.

Well, well, well… I know today we are paying dues to Jay’s first album, Reasonable Doubt, but I couldn’t wait another second to share this with you all. Don’t thank me though; thank ya boy YN for the break through of the the original samples used in Jay’s latest album, The Blueprint 3. Just one day after the album leaked on the Net, RapRadar has revealed 9 samples from Blueprint 3. I still haven’t listened to the album in whole yet, so I cannot confirm if these are complete. Props YN!

Check it out after the cut…

2 Hype: Original Samples

by Thomas on August 27, 2009 · 5 comments

2hype-wide

I’m being extremely lazy tonight, but I want to get this up.  Peep what wiki says about this album:

2 Hype is the debut album by rap duo, Kid ‘n Play. The album was released in 1988 for Select Records and was produced by Hurby Luv Bug and The Invincibles. 2 Hype was a success for the duo, reaching #96 on the Billboard 200 and #9 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and being certified Platinum by the RIAA. Three singles found success on the Hot Rap Singles chart, “Rollin’ with Kid ‘n Play” (#2), “2 Hype” (#19) and “Gittin’ Funky” (#24). In 2008, “Rollin with Kid n Play” was ranked number 63 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of Hip Hop.”

This is another album from the GREAT year of 1988.  How many dope albums came out that year?

The story goes that Eminem got a hold of this mixtape and was blown away by it.  Soon thereafter Curtis had a meeting with Em/Dre….and the rest is history according to wikipedia.

This mixtape has sold between 400,000-500,000 copies, which is amazing to me for some freestyles and leaked tracks from the shelved Power of the Dollar album (I have it!).

This set is missing samples for “Rotten Apple,” “Life on The Line,” and “U Not Like Me.”  We didn’t include  the Wu-Tang/EPMD instrumentals used for “That’s What’s Up” or “Doo Wop Freestyle.”

The set include eight tracks we haven’t featured on the site…tracklist and link after the jump.

lootpack2

The debut album from Lootpack (Madlib, Wildchild, and DJ Romes) seems to be a “classic” type album to many because of Madlib’s production, the rhymes of Wildchild, and the great features from Dilated Peoples, Medaphoar, Oh No, Defari, Tha Alkaholiks, Declaime, and others.

Our man E.J. blessed us with this set that includes at least 20 samples not included in other sets featured on the site.  I’m confident in saying that this set is probably 10-15 more samples deep.  Any additional information regarding samples….you know what to do…leave a comment.

Contrary to other members on this site, I can’t get enough of the new Slaughterhouse album… been bumping it non-stop since it leaked a week before it’s release date. Thomas and I have also been diggin for the samples since then too! Some were easy, some were not. In fact, there are still a few songs left that we don’t have sample credits for. But that’s not gonna stop us from putting these samples out. In the past we used to sit on sets for so long just to get them perfect, but the demand is high so here you are! I know some of you will come through with the missing samples… especially “Onslaught 2″, which is right at the tip of me tongue… I just can’t place it.

FRSH AIRE SEKOU dropped a comment asking for a zip file of our Slaughterhouse Sample of the Day post about a month ago.  Well, here you go!  This set includes the samples from that post, a few stray joints from our Slaughterhouse: The Prequel comp, and a Joell and Royce sample.  The Royce sample should be familiar because a Hip Hop legend used it as well. This should hold you over until we get all the samples for the new Slaughterhouse album.

Joe Budden’s Padded Room [read review] was suppose to drop on October 28, 2008, instead we got Halfway House [read review].  Halfway House was released digitally as a hold over until the official album (Padded Room) dropped.  I like this album sans a few tracks, but the best thing to come out of this album is Slaughterhouse [download prequel].

Joe Budden’s albums seem heavily influenced by Rock and Heavy Metal samples…and this set isn’t any different.  We are still missing a few sample sources so you know what to do….hit the comments with additional information.  Out of the 11 samples found…..10 haven’t been featured in previous sets.  Enjoy!

Props to our man E.J. for blessing us with this set.  Jurassic 5 released their self-titled album in 1998.  The LP was produced entirely by Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark.  The set contains 14 original samples that have not been featured in previous sets.  So hit the cut for the album info and link…
