London producer Eric Lau (who has worked with artists such as Lupe Fiasco, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Oddisee, Muhsinah, and Tanya Morgan) recently teamed up with Detroit emcee Guilty Simpson for this 7-track EP, The Mission. Salem Psalms teams up with The Beatz & Lyrics show with Jayforce to release the 3rd in their A3C mixtape series, Beatz & Lyrics 2 Go Vol 2. The mixtape was recorded entirely during the A3C Hip Hop Festival in Atlanta, GA on site at the venue in the Unique Squared Mobile Studio and also at Salem Psalms Library, an earshot away from the festival grounds. The project is once again executive produced by production duo The Bros Dynamite and features some of the most talented and notable independent hip hop artists around.

The 22 track mixtape is a mash-up of new collaborations between artists and producers that previously may not have worked together. Melodious Monk: Visiting Detroit EP

Every time this year, the J Dilla tributes pour in and it’s hard to gauge if the artist’s intentions are really in the right place. One thing you can tell with Melodious Monk, who just happens to be a pretty dope emcee/producer dual threat, is that he created Visiting Detroit as a true homage to James Yancey. What Inspired Me to Do This?

When I reminisce on James Dilla “Detroit” Yancey, I dwell on Detroit. Dilla embodies Detroit. Though I’ve never physically visited the feeling I received when I first heard “Welcome 2 Detroit” on February 27th 2001 took me on a trip.

Music I believe should take you somewhere, and Dilla had the ability to do just that. J Dilla is “Detroit”! In 2012 as a musician and lyricist I want to visit the world but not physically and take my family with me, music I believe is beyond the physical plane so I decided to start the year off visiting the home of one of the greatest producer’s that ever touched a MPC and that’s none other than Jay Dee.

With the love I had for his first solo effort I wondered what it would be like if I visited Detroit and J Dilla had the chance to show me around, so instead of just lyrically expressing my feelings over Dilla tracks I wanted to feel like we were in the studio together and I needed to get direction from Dilla’s lyrics on what I should reflect on.

I choose only to do five of the original 14 tracks on “Welcome 2 Detroit” because I had no intent to recreate Dilla’s album but give a sample of how great the original album is, I hope that this project motives listeners to visit Dilla’s first solo album if they haven’t before, or even revisit it again.

I would like to dedicate this project to the Yancey family, and to the legend “James Jay Dee Yancey” born February 7th 1974. I hope that this project can be seen as a fan paying respect to the family, and friends of JDilla.

Fatal Lucciauno’ssophomore album, Respect, will be released February 21st, but first, the Seattle emcee is excited to release his collaborative EP with distinguished producer and fellow Seattleite Jake One. For Fatal, The Message EP serves as his most personal work to date, showcasing a collection of stories that show listeners a deeper side of Fatal. “I poured my soul onto the songs,” explains Fatal. “The have-nots, the hustlers – we have real stories that transcend pain and beauty, and this music is a bridge to the new me.” In keeping with the personal nature of the EP, Fatal chose to keep features to a minimum. “If the person I had on the song wasn’t emotionally capable of reaching into their soul,” notes Fatal, “they aren’t on the EP.”

Jake One handles production for the EP, and the chemistry that the two developed while working on “Amazing” (the lead single from Respect), is on full display throughout. “Working with Jake is the best; he don’t require shit, just that I be creative and honest in my music,” explains Fatal. “The Message couldn’t be illustrated without Jake One’s help.” And that message, says Fatal, is, “We are here – and we ain’t going nowhere.” But there’s more to the message than that, remarks Fatal, “and if you listen, you’ll hear it.”
