When track two from Chip$’ Couch Potato comes on, it mesmerizes you with its off beat drum pattern and addictive vocal sample, which sounds like someone speaking in tongues. Chip$‘ verses are a mixture of style, ish talking, humor, and numerous background vocal effects (growls, mumbles, etc). Add those elements with his knack for emphasizing and stretching his words alongside his Detroit vernacular and you get a track that I’ve played 42 times since 9/13. Don’t believe me? Apollo laces a somber almost gloomy track for Journalist 103 to provide his first person view of the world, through “Bincoulars.” The track comes with all of the Apollo Brown trimmings he is becoming known for: static filled beat, dirty drums, and wicked vocal sample. This track bangs as he seems to summons his enter Tru Master with those baring horns, sad vocal sample, and some piano keys sprinkled on top. All this allows Journalist to write two verses filled with self-reflection, empathy, anger, spirituality, warnings, and words of encouragement/hope. All of the aforementioned is contained in 32 bars.

Boog and Apollo Brown‘s album, Brown Study is an extremely dope album, nuff said. Apollo crafted mellow, but hard knocking tracks for Boog to spit her poetic rhymes over. From start to finish the album is straight crack, but “Friends Like These” is my ish. I have to listen to the track at least three/four times before I move on with the album because of Apollo’s signature drums, light doses of static throughout the track, and the beautiful wailing via the sample. The beat is a perfect match for Boog‘s seemly personal rhymes about her experience with a backstabbing friend. Boog takes the aforementioned friend to task over betrayal and trust with a verbal dressing down. I sent Boog a message via twitter early Wednesday morning that somebody’s feelings will be hurt after hearing this song. She said fuck it! Kam drops an equally impressive verse as well, but this is about the lady on the track tho.

I know by now everyone has download and at least given Black Milk‘s fourth album, Album of the Year AT least two or three spins by now? I’m on my 1012th listen in little over a day and it’s like “Whoa!” (c) @therealblackrob. I can honestly say I’ve just started following Black like two years ago (have all his retail albums now) and am impressed with his progression as an artist (emcee/producer). The leaps and bounds he has made from Broken Wax/Sound of the City era (when I caught on) is noticeable in his productions and lyrics. I’m hoping after a few listens everyone will support? The album hits retail/online stores on 9/14. Can pre-order the album from Fatbeats or BlackMilkBiz.

The track that EVERYONE seems to be talking about is “Black & Brown” with Black and Danny Brown. Black‘s verse is sharp and filled with confident witty bars; for example: “here to save the game like a memory card.” His verse isn’t anything to sneeze at as it’s filled with some quotable’s. Then that damn Danny Brown comes on. Dude is in a zone. It seems like everything he laces right now is gold and “Black & Brown” isn’t different. You know what your getting with Danny, weed, chicks, and crazy metaphors. Who else right now would reference Kirby vacuum cleaners, Aaliyah, Shinobi in the same song? Right now his flow and delivery are standouts among the 1 billion rappers in the game. Today, he’s in the running for top emcee this year for me (Phonte still has the best verse though).

I wrote the lyrics out after slaving over the song for almost an hour. I’m unsure about some parts of the song so hit the comments with corrections if any.

I’ve been “working” on this post for two days now trying to put into words the dopeness that is “Tigallo for Dolo.” I’ve had four or five drafts of this post for some unknown reason. Phonte in this one verse tells us where he’s been, where is at (currently), and where he sees his future going musically. “Tigallo for Dolo” showcases why Phonte is one of the best emcees in this rap thing with a verse full of humor, witty lines, honesty, and straight talk.

“Tigallo for Dolo” and Tay‘s verse from “Best of Times” are the gold standard regarding lyrics this year for me. Right now these are my songs of the year. Everybody has to come correct to knock these joints from the top IMO.

March 9 will be upon us next week so the net will be flooded with Big Poppa tributes, mixtapes, fan remixes, video clips, etc. I’m pretty sure the KN crew will cook up something as well.

“Who Shot Ya?” is a suppose diss/mocking of 2-Pac after he was shot in New York, but Puff and B.I.G. denied the accusation. It has been reported and talked about hundreds of times over the years (and pointed out in Notorious) that the song was record prior to Pac‘s shooting. Who knows?

Lupe dropped his mixtape Enemy of the State: A Love Story at 12am on Thanksgiving day as promised. The tape seems to be getting praise for it’s strong lyricism and witty wordplay. I’m about ten listens already and dopeness is what I call it. Lupe gives great performances on all of the songs and I could have easily picked any song to highlight. “Fireman (Yoga Flame)” has Lupe flowing graciously over Lil’ Wayne‘s “Fireman” instrumental and owning the track. “Life Changes” from Wu-Tang Clan‘s heavily slept on 8 Diagrams [sample set] album was a beautiful tribute to Russell Jones. All of the clan except Ghostface contribute a dope verse to Ason. Deck‘s verse has always been the stand out for me because of the pain, hurt, and shame he felt because of Dirty‘s death and what he didn’t do to help ODB when he needed it. I hope Lil’ Wayne‘s people are taking note.

Paying tribute to Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s life and music will be taking place until Sunday, which happens to be his born day. Highlighting some of Dirt Dog’s lyrics is a must over the next three days as well.

“Raw Hide” is one of my favorites off of his debut album as it has Dirt, Rae, and Method Man throwing sharp darts over RZA’s loop and dusty drums. Even thought Method Man almost steals the whole song from Dirt and Rae with the hook; Dirt sets the tone with his sing song intro and lines like “I came out my momma pussy—I’m on warfare” or “You bound to catch AIDS or something/not sayin I got it, but nigga if I got it you got it.” Simplistic in nature, but playful and humorous as well. When listening to these verse’s it makes me wonder what’s going on in his mind to say THAT? I’ve always loved the unpredictability and seemly randomness of his rhymes. I believe the first two verse’s from “Raw Hide” highlight those positive attributes. There is truly no father to his style.

I couldn’t decide between the first or second verse so I put up both.
