As we get into the third month of 2010, there are a few pretty solid hip hop albums dropping today. First and foremost is the HiPNOTT Records debut from K. Sparks, featuring G.C. on production, A Day in the Life. That’s in case you didn’t know.. we’ve only be promoting it for the past month… lol. Another digital release dropping today is Picture These Remixes from DJ K.O. You may remember the remix contest we held on the site last year in coordination with Beat*Society. This album is the result. If you haven’t heard the original, Picture This (2008), I highly recommend you check that as well.
Hit the jump to see what else dropped today and sound off on what you’ll be coppin!
A Day in the Life by K. Sparks produced by G.C., with features from Sean Price, Julius Francis, Cymarshall Law, Dave Barz, and Chris Young, has dropped and is available for purchase on iTunes, Amazon.com, and other major outlets. To get a taste of the album, download the free sampler of A Day in the Lifehere.
A Day in the Life is a fitting title for this conceptual project, which was recorded in just one day’s time. Listeners are taken from the beginning to end of a typical day in Sparks’ life. The album is an exploration into all aspects of the artist’s identity, a reveal he faces in an intimate and emotionally supercharged way. Sparks provides the A Day in the Life tour using inventive wordplay, internal rhyming, battle raps, storytelling and eye-widening punch-lines. Equally integral to the project, producer G.C. has master-crafted a backdrop for Sparks that glows with rich instrumentation and a comforting jazziness, while still maintaining a raw, boom-bap vibe overall.
Standout tracks include “Keep Movin,” with its New York-drenched drum/bass/guitar trifecta, a smooth chorus from Julius Francis and monstrous verses from both Sparks and the infamous Sean P [download this track here]. “Watching Me” includes a harmonious chorus by Julius Francis, and the head-turning lyrics of rapper Chris Young. Meanwhile, Sparks unloads battle rhymes full of potent patterns and an entire verse of food-related metaphors. The chemistry between Sparks and G.C. shines on the final track, “Let Me Fly.” Sparks rides G.C.’s soulful, ambient beat as he unravels the myths and misconceptions of his rise to greatness.
IV The Polymath recently released the Couch Sessions EP for free with Jondis as the duo I.deals and now drops his new solo album Never Sleep II. The project features 14 instrumentals along with 2 songs featuring Jondis and the homie Junclassic. All beats on the album were made between midnight & 6 a.m, hence the name. Hit the jump for the bandcamp link which directs all profits directly to IV, no middle man.
I gotta admit that there isn’t anything excited that I’ll be coppin’ today. I’ll probably check the Planet Asia and DJ Babu releases and see if they’re worth it. So if you all ain’t feeling anything this week either, you can save up and cop the new K. Sparks album next week! Hit the jump to see what else dropped today…
Not a whole lot dropping today, but there sure are some gems. Today’s release day concentrates on quality over quantity. One that I already have pre-ordered is the new album from Freeway & Jake One. Others to check out is the Return of the Wu album and the new Jedi Mind Tricks LP. Also, the homie Toki Wright is dropping a new EP digitally today. According to Toki’s Facebook, looks like his EP got pushed to Thursday. Hit the jump and let us know what you’re coppin…
Chaundon of the HOJ drops his new project called Baby Making Music via his Bandcamp page. The album features Shuko, Gyphted, Trox, & Beat Medic on the boards. The only other emcee on this joint is fellow HOJ member Median. Hit the jump for the full artwork and tracklisting…
February always seems like a big month for R&B releases. Makes sense since Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. Today we see the come albums from two legends in the game: the legendary Gil Scott-Heron and the lovely seductive Sade. Take your pic, I’ll be picking up both. I might even check that new Jaheim that drops today as well. Hip Hop wise, there are a couple of release that you may be interested in. Hit the jump to check the full list and let us know what you’ll be coppin…
Today is a day that I’ve been waiting for for a good while now. Not only is tonight the premiere of the last season of LOST, but Statik Selektah’s new album drops today. But aside from my favorites, there are some other great albums available today. Another highly anticipated album is the Green Ghost Project from Styles P and DJ Green Lantern. Others may be looking to check the new Lil Wayne album, although it leaked months ago. And there’s also the new project from Madlib and Guilty Simpson. Hit the jump for the full list of what’s out today and let us know what you’ll be coppin…
Today is probably the first big music release day of 2010, but feel free to call me biased. Out today, we have the new EP from Cymarshall Law, which is our first official release of the year on HiPNOTT Records and our second official release ever! So yeah, I’m a little excited… lol. But in all honesty, there are a handful of other albums that I will personally be supporting today including new releases from Intuition, Oddisee, K-Murdock, and Strong Arm Steady… all of which are amazing in their own right. Hit the jump to check the full release list and let us know what you’ll be spending your hard earned money on…
Cymarshall Law’s newest project Creator’s Kid EP is now available for purchase on iTunes, Amazon, and other digital retailers. The music video for single “Harder Than Thou” directed by Jimmy Giamborne, who has also directed videos for Sean Price and Reef the Lost Cauze to name a few, is hitting the web today and can be seen above.
Sweden native D-Slaps produced the seven-track EP, along with one track by Remot. The team delivers thirty minutes of raw hip-hop grit. The first single, “Harder than Thou,” sets the tone with its soulful boom-bap sound, forceful lyrics and cuts by DJ JS-1. Additional features include Skit Slam, Silent Knight and Mary Lou. Creator’s Kid EP is a worthy follow-up to his widely touted most recent album Hip Hop in the Soul (2008, Freedom Entertainment) which included single “Control” (Featuring KRS-One).
How do I put this politely? This week basically sucks for new music releases. We have one in hip hop (shown above). Can’t figure it out? It’s the new album from RJD2, The Colossus. If you’re looking to support hip hop today, you can buy it here.
We’re still sort of in a lull for new music releases, but there are a few noteworthy albums to check out. I’ve been hearing good things about this Blockhead album above. I haven’t checked it yet, but it’s probably the dopest album dropping today. That and the new DOOM EP, which is a vinyl exclusive. Also being re-released today is Slum Village’s Fantastic Vol. 2. I know, nothing too exciting… but hit the jump and let us know if you’ll be coppin anything…
For the first New Music Tuesday of 2010, there really isn’t a whole lot to spend your money on. That is, unless, you’re a huge Kanye West fan. If you dug the VH1 Storytellers episode Kanye was a part of a few months back, then you can go out today and purchase this new CD + DVD combo, featuring over 70 minutes of live performance footage. Includes the hits “Heartless,” “Flashing Lights,” “Touch the Sky,” “Good Life,” “Stronger” and more. Plus three never-before-seen performances and special Q&A interview with Kanye.
If you ain’t feelin that, than save up your money… or get caught up on some of the dope albums that you didn’t get around to buying last year!
Not a whole lot dropping today (that I know of anyway). The 4th quarter music scene is about over with… anything dropping today is just trying to get in at the last minute before Christmas. Expect music releases to be more or less quiet for the next couple of months. Hit the jump and let us know if you’re coppin anything… I know you Mary fans will be! And if we missed anything, let us know in the comments.
