First of all, the good news is that Guru is doing well and should make a full recovery. But this story of what Solar is doing to his family needs to be shared. As many know Solar has been working with Guru for the past 6 years. Now, according to Guru’s nephew Justin Nicholas-Elam Ruff, his family has had no clue what’s going on because Solar has full control. This is really a sad story but it needs to be told. Solar should be exposed for what he is doing to Guru and his family. You can hit the jump for the “official” statement on Guru’s health from Solar (who describes himself as a hit producer in it). Despite all this, our best wishes go to Guru and we hope he makes a quick recovery. Also our thoughts are with his family who are dealing with this mess in such a tough time. Props to the DJ Premier Blog for all the info.
There are reports going around the Internet and Twitter right now stating that Guru (one half of the group Gangstarr) has had a heart attack and is now in a coma. Apparently, the word originated from Guru’s sister, though we cannot confirm. I guess more info when it becomes available.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to Guru and his family.
QN5 has announced their planned release schedule for 2010. The schedule is highlighted by a some huge releases: CunninLynguists’ new album Oneirology, Tonedeff & Kno’s long delayed Chico & The Man, PackFM’s highly anticipated I Fucking Hate Rappers and a few surprises such as a Kno solo album, a Deacon The Villain/Sheisty Khrist collab and a sophomore LP from Mr. SOS. Which ones are you looking forward to? Do you think we’ll see all of these projects drop this year?
After some delay, we’ll finally be getting a new Little Brother album! Phonte & Big Pooh have announced that they will release Leftback on April 20th, scrapping original plans for an EP to create a full album. Hit the jump for the press release which includes details on producers & guests involved in the project.
This news defintely came out of nowhere. Here we have the promotional video to announce the legendary KRS-One linking up with Wu-Tang producer True Master for a new album entitled Meta Historical. The Blastmaster definitely experienced a resurgence with his Buckshot collaboration LP Survival Skills and now is returning with a new solo project completely produced by True Master.
As the promo for Canibus’Melatonin Magik begins, this video with A&R M-Eighty pops up with Kurupt dropping some big news. The original supergroup featuring four lyrical juggernauts, the 4HRSMN, will be creating an album according to 1/4 of the group. Do you think we’ll finally see the long awaited LP from Killah Priest, Ras Kass, Canibus & Kurupt?
Just woke up to the news of this tragedy this morning… another one of our greats passed away last night. Rest in peace Teddy.

Major props goes out to K. Sparks, who is featured in this month’s issue of The Source magazine in the Unsigned Hype section! K. Sparks’ next album, A Day In the Life which is totally produced by G.C., is set for release via all digital retailers February 23rd on HiPNOTT Records.
You may have noticed the lack of new sample compilations posted on the site… yeah we’ve been slacking. More importantly, you may have noticed some of your favorite sample sets missing from our archives. I won’t get into which samples have been taken down. I will say that the decision was a hard one to make, but one that I felt strongly enough about to remove some of the hard work that Thomas and I have compiled over the years.
Congrats go out to Nicolay, Phonte, Muhsinah and the rest of The Foreign Exchange members for being nominated in the category Best Song in Urban/Alternative for the 52nd Grammy Awards, for their song “Daykeeper” off the album Leave It All Behind. This is truly some excellent news, to hear that “our” music has come this far.
Nicolay sends his thanks to everyone who’s supported them and he also adds, “In 2010, be on the lookout for solo albums from Yahzarah (spring), Zo! (summer) and Phonte (fall), all on The Foreign Exchange Music.”
As with any new record label in their first year, 2009 has been a slow start for HiPNOTT Records. But that’s not to say that it hasn’t been productive! As we look into 2010, HiPNOTT Records is already looking to make its mark on the map and the hip hop world. And we’ll be kicking the year off right with two brand new artists on our roster: Cymarshall Law and K. Sparks.
In the recent issue of XXL magazine, XXL lists their Top 100 Hip-Hop Web Sites. For once, we made the list! But it is a Top 100 list… who DIDN’T make the list? I ain’t mad, this is a great look. XXL learned from Vibe’s mistake and decided to NOT rank their list. What’s the point of a list again? Sorry… again, not mad. Thanks XXL!
Hit the jump for the full list…
Edit: This list supposedly had been leaked by some dude name Animal. If so, props to him. More importantly, XXL is commenting on each one of the sites on their list here. Thanks for the heads up Ivan!
This is what XXL has to say about KevinNottingham.com:
Underground rap shit.
Wow, is that what we are? I’d love to hear comments about that!
