For Week 17 of WEB’s Open Bar Season, the Vancouver emcee gets a little personal:

“I’ve had this song sitting around for over a year now and I’ve been debating whether to record it or not because it’s extremely personal. I always have a hard time recording songs that are really personal to me. Songs like “Liberation”, “Don’t Love Me Like They Should” and this one take me a while to get comfortable with because it’s hard to have and objective opinion of something when you’re looking at it from the inside out rather than the outside in. But when I randomly downloaded Jagged Edge’s “Tip Of My Tongue” beat, I felt it would be a good backdrop for this song so I decided to give it a shot. This one is much less about flow and delivery and more just me expressing the things that go on inside my head.” -WEB

“After a close friend of mine passed away earlier this week, I was reminded of a conversation we had over a year ago about our views on religion. In a strange twist of coincidence, I actually recorded a song that I wrote which was inspired by that conversation a few weeks ago over Cunnilynguists’ “K.K.K.Y.” beat. So this week I’m letting this one go in tribute to my brother, fellow artist and peer, Rasul. RIP Brother.” -WEB

“Drowning” is a song that I’ve had sitting around for a while but I didn’t really have anywhere to place it. Basically just how I feel some days being an artist trying to find my place amongst millions of other artists. Also, the good folks from Refined Hype will now be co-hosting Open Bar Season along with Kevin Nottingham so shouts to them.

This song was inspired by 3 different experiences I had in NYC. There’s a certain feeling that you get in New York that you won’t find anywhere else in the world and this beat really captured that feeling for me. In all honesty, the feeling is something I can’t compare to anything else but I know I’m addicted to it. So with that said, NYC I’ll be seeing you again soon and WEB & I.D.e.A are God’s Favorites drops 04/19/2010.

Who knew that two of Vancouver’s emcees that we support here on the site has history? For Week 12 of WEB’s Open Bar Season, he reunites with his partner in crime:

“Not a lot of people out there are aware of this but e.d.g.e. and myself were in a group together for 5 years. We came up together and basically created the mixtape game in Vancouver. There were a few people putting them out before us, but after we did it (successfully) everybody had a mixtape. As a group we played a major role in molding VanCity’s Hip Hop scene. But as time wore on we eventually ended up moving in our own directions creatively and as a result the Usual Suspecs (our group) dissolved. So this week is something special for us and the people that came up around us. This is the first piece of music that we’ve appeared on together in years and it won’t be the last.”

Basically what Open Bar Season is for me is more or less just me having fun experimenting with different flows, voice inflections and rhyme patterns and also at the same time getting people ready for my upcoming album Marvelous World Of Color. I have a really random sense of humor and I don’t get many opportunities to express that on my albums so Open Bar Season is a way for me to loosen up and get all that shit out. So with that said we’re gonna have some fun with chemicals for week 4….
