Mike Rizzy has some pretty dope mixes over at his site. His latest is a mix of 9th Wonder productions.
Mike says, “In a time where Lil Jon ruled the airwaves, I was literally listening to “The Listening” by Little Brother 24/7. 9th Wonder’s beats were every hip hop purists dream. Soulful chopped samples and lyrics that weren’t about drugs and gun blasting. It was hip hop that was fun and literally everyone could relate to. I was drawn to the music the same way I previously followed J Dilla, DJ Premier, Pete Rock and the Rza. Maybe they were just ahead of their time but real hip hop seemed to get pushed to the side for one note melodies and drunk in the club anthems. Unfortunately like many great groups like Tribe, Pete Rock & CL, Gangstarr before them, Little Brother disbanded. I still have hold onto faith that one day they may reunite, but until then i’ll pay homage to the man they call 9th Wonder. 9th went on to produce for everybody from Jay-Z, Luda, Destiny’s Child, Common, Mos Def, Erykah Badu and on and on.”

So on June 22nd, I hit up the Real Frequency show. They have been number one in the 11PM to 1AM time slot for a long while now and is most definitely Toronto’s premier hip hop radio show (along with OTA Live, of course). With a combination of me asking to be on the show and plenty of gratitude from Arcee, Muziklee Inzane, P Plus, and of course, Keezy, I was able to get in on the second hour.
Flow 93.5 is quite possibly the largest “urban” radio station in Canada, so this was a great look as I got to spread the word of KevinNottingham.com, what the site does, our always interesting sampling controversy, and the other things going on with my other projects (OKP, Manifesto, etc).
Regardless, it was a great experience and I got to witness a massive freestyle by the homie Empire (what up Quackass!), and got to discuss, very intellectually and seriously may I add, hip hop on levels I really never get to do. So thank you Arcee and Inzane for driving the conversation and really banging out something great. Hopefully the K Nots fam loves this as much as I did. Sorry I didn’t shout out all the fans of the site, but that’s an automatic!

100dBs releases a new soulful mix for you to sit back and enjoy. Check out what 100dBs had to say about the project:
“Delving deep into the Stax Records back catalog, Stax Of Stax is the smoothest of crash courses through life and love, tribulation and elation. Created for one Stax fan in particular, without intentions for release, this mix puts the songs at the center rather than the full-on flash and bombast of technical showmanship. From the searing cool of The Dramatics’ “The Devil Is Dope” to the conflicted passions of an adultress in Veda Thomas’ “I Know It’s Not Right,” 100dBs offers up lesser-heard revelations-and yeah, a few airhorns and timely echoes-alongside the acclaimed likes of Isaac Hayes, Carla Thomas, The MGs and The Staple Singers.”
