In the late 1970s, the term Emcee, or MC (master of ceremonies), became associated with the role known as the rapper in hip hop music and culture. An MC uses rhyming verses, whether pre-written or freestyled, to introduce and praise the DJ he or she works with, to hype up the crowd, to pay homage to his own stature, or to comment on society. As hip hop progressed, the title MC has been thought to mean a number of acronyms such as Microphone Controller, Microphone Commander, Mic Checka, Music Commentator, and one who Moves the Crowd, notably through Rakim’s lyrics on the matter (”Eric B. easy on the cut and no mistakes allowed/ ‘Cuz to me, ‘MC’ means ‘move the crowd‘”). Some use this word interchangeably with the term rapper, while for others the term denotes a conception and demonstration of the role indicative of skill and of connection to the wider culture, while the latter term does not. Here are our Top Emcees of 2008.
Props to Scritch and Scratch for the above sketch.

The strength of the posse cut has really died down in the last few years. In its hay-day, a posse cut was a necessary feature on an album. Now, it can be the album’s biggest flaw. With that said, here are the top 10 bright spots in terms of Crew/Clique/Posse tracks for 2008.
To qualify for this, the track needed to have verses by at least 3 different artist.

We aren’t done with our lists of 2008 yet! Still got more to drop this week. Since this site is geared mostly towards producers, you know we couldn’t leave this Top 10 out. Here’s are our picks for the top producers of the year…

This list should exemplify the massive talent an MC has in those 16-32-48 bars. Some are guest spots who stole the show and others have a guest spot, but made the orginal artist irrelevant. I really could’ve filled this list with Elzhi and Royce verses; I tried to expand though. Peep it. (Excludes any songs that are comprised on ONLY one verse).

It’s 2009 already in some parts of the world… one place in particular, Melbourne Australia, where my good friends The Movement Fam reside. Those cats are gonna be doing big things in 2009. Aside from their music, they’re trying to move in on the blogging front!. Cee, Bekah, Notion, DJ Grain, Tommy Gunz, and the rest of the Fam broke down the best and worst of 2008 recently on their blog. Their list is definitely one worth mentioning on the site here… they really broke it down! I was extremely happy to see the category “Hottest Broad of the Year”… lol. So if you guys are looking for more lists to check out, head on over…

Now we haven’t been exposed to as much R&B this year as we have been to Hip-Hop, so take these lists with a grain of salt. We’re probably missing a tune or two from some artists that probably should’ve gotten a mention, but damn, we put in some work man! We listened and listened and even though the reviews didn’t come up, we recognized! Fact is, R&B had a strong enough year that it deserved its own section. There was no way we could incorporate these albums/songs in with hip-hop because there would be no hip-hop material cutting the list. So, enter this list to be fair. Nevertheless, 2008 was the year of soul and the following are great examples of some of the best R&B features, songs and albums of the year, as well as some of the criminally slept on and most disappointing.

I really had no idea how to put this category in, but we get tons of music all the time; sometimes really bad, sometimes really good. Fact is, not everybody even knows about it. This category is for those albums.

These may be slept on in terms of how many people listened to them, appreciated them, or simply just noticed them. Some probably didn’t get enough praise despite being listened to by thousands, but there are a variety of ways for one to be “slept on.” This is ordered on a combination of how hard it’s been slept on and why it shouldn’t be slept on, due to its quality. It also takes into the consideration the ability to be slept on, meaning that the album has to get considerable talk and mention for people to sleep on.

Some of these artists are far from ‘new,’ hence the ‘breakthrough’ part. There is still something relatively new about each one of these artists, nevertheless.
