Producer’s Spotlight: DJ Premier

DJ PremierProducer’s Spotlight is a new feature here on the blog. Let me give you a little background. As a lover of music and part-time DJ, I’ve always loved putting together mixtapes (or a collection, if you will) of songs by a favorite artist (sort of a greatest hits), new music of the current month, or songs by a favorite producer. Out of all the mixtapes I put together, my favorites by far are those that feature music by the same producer. The great thing about these mixtapes is that they seem to flow incredibly well since most producers have a certain style that they stick to. I’m excited to share these with everyone, because a lot of people are unfamiliar with the person behind the song — the one that gave the music its style and make it do what it do.

The tracklisting is not in order of favorite to least favorite — they’re all favorites. The order is based on what I felt flowed together musically one after another. The way this article will work is I will first give you a little background on the producer or artist, then I will provide the tracklisting of my mixtape along with links to low quality mp3s for you to hear. Songs will also be available on my Myspace page if you prefer to listen there. Most mixtapes will be able to fit on one CD, so feel free to recreate the mix! Enough with this info, let’s get on with the article…

DJ Premier is a prominent American hip hop producer and DJ, and the instrumental half of the duo Gang Starr, together with MC Guru on the lyrical side. Originally from Houston, he has lived in Brooklyn, New York virtually his entire professional career. Premier was introduced to DJing while attending school at Prairie View A&M in Prairie View, Texas. DJ Premier’s original stage name was Waxmaster C, although he had already changed it to DJ Premier after he had relocated to Brooklyn and joined Gang Starr. He chose the name “Premier” because he wanted to be the first to do what he did. Besides co-producing almost the entirety of the Gang Starr catalog with Guru, DJ Premier has created countless classics for many groups and solo artists since the early 90’s - working with virtually every major rapper from the period. These include notable tracks for artists such as Nas, The Notorious B.I.G., KRS-One, Jay-Z, Common, Big L, M.O.P., Mos Def, Dilated Peoples, Snoop Dogg and Royce Da 5′9″.
