Producer’s Spotlight: 9th Wonder

9th Wonder9th Wonder has become one of my favorite producers lately. Hailing from North Carolina, 9th Wonder (whose birth name is Patrick Douthit) is probably considered one of the heavyweight producers in the underground hip hop game. Only recently has he gained mainstream exposure by producing tracks for Jay-Z, Destiny’s Child, and Mary J. Blige.

One of the original member of now-duo Little Brother, 9th Wonder spends most of his talent producing beats for fellow Justus League artists, such as Phonte & Big Pooh from Little Brother, Median, and Joe Scudda. He has also produced whole albums with Murs, Jean Grae, Buckshot, and Skyzoo and released remixed versions of Nas’ God’s Son and Jay-Z’s Black Album. Since his departure with Little Brother, 9th Wonder continues to stay busy, releasing compilation albums under his own name with the Dream Merchant albums.

If I were to compare 9th Wonder with any other producers, I would say his style is similar to Kanye West or J. Dilla, as they all tend to use old soul samples in their beats. If you’re not familiar with 9th Wonder, check out some of the tracks below. This list is a compilation of my favorite 9th Wonder produced songs…

Yeah, I like Nicolay, but I’m not familiar with any work he’s done other than with Little Brother and the Foreign Exchange project he did with Phonte.
