In the spirit of listening to Dilla productions all day, I realized why I love the remix of “Runnin’” so much. It’s because Jay Dee sampled my favorite Gap Band song, “Yearning For Your Love.” That lead me to play the Gap Band song over and over and over again, until I decided to find out what other hip hop songs sampled this classic. To my amazement, I found that Dilla flipped this track on more than one occasion; three to be exact. I thought, “What an interesting concept for the blog.”
One of my favorite features over at soul-sides.com is “Who Flipped It Better?”; where they take an old classic, find two hip hop producers who have sampled it, and ask the question. As much as this site has been dedicated to soul-sampled hip hop, I figure this would be a great addition to the blog.
“Yearning For Your Love” has been sampled on numerous other hip hop songs; such as Nas’ “Life’s A Bitch”, Heavy D’s “?”, and Mia X’s “Whatcha Wanna Do”, but I wanted to pin the three Dilla tracks together. So listen to the three songs, along with the original joint, and let me know where you think he flipped it better. Obviously the sample is more prominent in “Runnin’”, but you can definitely hear remnants of The Gap Band classic in the Slum Village and ATCQ tracks. I like how Dilla kept most of the original intact on “Runnin’”. What do you think?

i think the remix for runnin was the best one.
dilla flipped the best part of the song to sample,
although the resemblance to “life’s a bitch” is uncanny, there’s that something that differs the beats. i think that’s the genius part of it.
