I’ve been wanting to get this blog back on track lately. With all the remix albums flooding us, I wanted to get back to one of my passions… hip hop samples. And what better way to do it than to highlight a classic: Minnie Riperton’s “Baby This Love I Have”. If you have not heard this track, it is a must download. I know you’re familiar with the hip hop classics that have sampled it, most notably “Check The Ryme” and “K.O.S. (Determination)”. I threw the Pete Rock in there when I noticed he had flipped it too.
All three producers did a great job with this sample and each one made it their own. Personally, I’m gonna have to go with the originators… A Tribe Called Quest. “Check The Rhyme” is my joint and they just made this sample the classic that it is. What do you think? Who flipped it better?

I don’t even have to listen to give the nod to the Blackstar joint… I had that tune in heavy rotation when that album dropped… real hip hop, with no disrespect to the other tracks which are also dope
Yeah, K.O.S. is probably my favorite track off Black Star and my favorite joint from Hi-Tek, so this one was hard for me. I kept going back and forth between K.O.S. and Tribe.You and I must come from different eras, cuz it ultimately was a no brainer for me to choose Check The Rhyme. But that’s what make this sample a great discussion piece! Two great hip hop songs from 2 different eras! Oh yeah, forgot about Pete.. I just kinda threw him in there. But he flips it hard too!
i’m 24 now, so I guess you could say my golden era of hip hop was 94 and on, even though I have listened to and own every tribe album, pete rock joint and pretty much every east coast hip hop album from 1990 and on
Yeah, I’m going on 34, but that’s the great thing about hip hop is how it brings us generations together! Good looks on supporting real hip hop!

the tribe got that 1, pete shit was all over the place and yet repetive, tek shit was smooth as hell tough but that candy rain joint did numbers wit the same sample damn no respect for heavy d?
Nice feedback, elove. You’re right, Candy Rain was the JOINT! Yeah, I was gonna put the Heavy D track up, but wasn’t feelin’ it as much.
I’m gonna say Hi-Tek flipped this best. His chemistry with Kweli we all know is impeccable, and that is on one of the greatest albums of all time. ATCQ would be my second choice.
