American Gangster Remixes: Round 49

Street RadioStreet Radio (production duo J. Math & Jimi Kendrix) recently announced the release of their version of Jay-Z’s newest album, American Gangster, which includes all new production as well as new vocals from AZ, Lil Fame of M.O.P., Tre Williams, & Jimi Kendrix.

2007 was a good year for Street Radio, placing over 25 tracks with artists like Bone Thugs N Harmony, Styles P, 2Pac, and Papoose. J. Math says, “When I heard that Jay-Z was throwing the acapellas for the album out there, I figured why not try to mess with it. We’ve wanted to do a tape for the streets anyway, so here was a good opportunity.”

Street Radio furthered the concept Jay-Z had, which was to create a companion album to the movie of the same name, featuring Denzel Washington portraying Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas. Jimi explains, “The movie takes place in the 1970’s and Jay stuck with that 70’s feel, as far as production. We wanted to update it to a current sound and escape the airy, jazzy feel that was going on.”

The remix album came together quickly and took on a new form. While Lil Fame, Tre Williams, and Jimi Kendrix were working on new hooks, Math was combing thru the movie, taking clips from the same scenes Jay-Z was portraying in his rhymes. Within a few days, Street Radio remixes to “American Dreamin” and “Blue Magic” were playing on Hot 97.

Math says, “Shouts to DJ Absolute for blasting these joints off. We’ve been getting a lot of calls! The streets and the industry dudes are loving this project. It’s a good note to end the year on.”

Look for more production from Street Radio in early 2008 on new releases from Ciara, Foxy Brown, LL Cool J, AZ, and Big Noyd.
