The Chronic: Original Samples

The Chronic: Original Samples

Ok, I know you all have been waiting for this one… we’ll here it is… all the original samples Dr. Dre used for his classic solo debut The Chronic. Diggin’ for this collection was a little more difficult than I had thought it would be. Grant it there are a lot of P-Funk samples from Parliament and Funkadelic, but there were a few samples I had trouble hunting down. But I found them all except for one. Johnny Hammond’s “Big Sir Sweet” was sampled twice on The Chronic (”A N***a Witta Gun”, and “High Powered”), however I could not find this sample anywhere. I wasn’t about to let one song stop the release of this collection though, so here it is with that one caveat. If anyone has the track, let us know and we’ll make this collection complete.

A big thank you goes out to my man, Thomas, who came through and hooked us up with Johnny Hammond’s “Big Sur Suite.” I think the reason I couldn’t find it is because I was looking for “Big Sir Sweet”! Those are the credits I had anyway. This jazz track from Johnny Hammond is just over 9 minutes long and is simply amazing. Yeah, I listen to jazz too, by the way. Well, I haven’t had the chance to up date the compilation yet, so I just included the link to the track below the compilation download link. I figure this’ll be best for those of you that have already downloaded the whole thing already anyway.

The Chronic is one of those albums that every true hip hop fans has in their collection. I bought it twice… once on cassette when it was originally released in 1992 and later on CD when the remastered edition came out. The Chronic brought the genre now known as G-funk to the mainstream — a genre defined by slow bass beats and melodic synthesizers, topped by P-Funk samples, female vocals, and a laconic, laid-back lyrical delivery referred to as a “lazy drawl”. The album is also credited with launching the careers of several prominent West Coast hip hop artists, including Snoop Dogg, Kurupt, Nate Dogg, and Warren G, — all of whom went on to pursue successful commercial careers. The Chronic is widely regarded as the album that re-defined West Coast rap, demonstrated gangsta rap’s commercial potential as a multi-platinum commodity, and established G-funk as the most popular sound in hip hop music for several years after its release, with Dr. Dre himself producing several major albums that drew heavily on his production style.

I think there’s a problem with MegaUpload right now… all my links there are showing up as temporarily unavailable. Hopefully it’s just temporary or I’ll have to look somewhere else to host these. Sorry… if someone else who already got it can reup it somewhere else, it would be appreciated.

I’m not 100% sure- but people say there is a bit of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”(?) in the chorus of “The Day The N*ggaz Took Over”
