If you’ve paid attention to both my American Gangster compilations, it’s easy to see which remix albums were my favorites. Previously, I did a spotlight on American Beatmaker producer MIDIMarc. This week I had the opportunity to catch up with American Clapster producer DJ SoulClap. Hailing out of Kiel, Germany, you can catch DJ SoulClap stopping by here from time to time or you can check out his own contributions as a blogger over at Wake Your Daughter Up.
When I heard SoulClap’s production style, I just knew I had to showcase him here. He takes tips from some of the best (DJ Premier, J Dilla, Pete Rock) and you can definitely hear it in his beats. Aside from the American Gangster remix project, SoulClap has a Promo EP available for download. I HIGHLY recommend you all checking this out! These tracks are simply AMAZING. SoulClap calls it an EP, but at 13 tracks this qualifies as an album for me.
Here’s what DJ SoulClap had to say about this project:
“I’ve been making Beats for 3 years now. I developed a lot over these years and my style of production changed. I’m still working with Cool Edit and Fruity Loops, but that’s cool with me cause when you got talent it doesn’t matter what you use (my opinion). Over the time, there were a lot of people requesting beats and they are some of the most talented MC’s out there (You can really say MC in theses cases) You will hear some of them in these 12 Tracks. (Plus Bonus Beat Snippet) There are Tracks featuring Tony Tigerstyle, Superstar Quamallah, Brown CO, Lox, Sly MC, Stranger Day and a few more.
Hip Hop is my life and I hope you can hear the love that I got in my beats, cause I put my heart in ‘em. I think the MC’s you can hear on the tracks fit the beats perfectly, not only with their voice and flow, but with their character and their passion. I got a lot of love for all of them. I wouldn’t work with anybody though, they have to be good people, I’m not fu**ing with assholes, if you aren’t a nice person the chances of getting a beat are really low. Plus you ain’t getting anything for free anymore (except you are fam). Hip Hop music has become too clean in my eyes, people got computer programs and try to make the sound as clean as possible, I’m a fan of the Golden Age, a mix doesn’t have to be super clean and loud, I love the crackling of the needle on the record, every track on my EP is mixed like I wanted it to be, there are tracks that need to sound dirty. As long as it sounds good, it’s dope! Don’t kill all the dynamics, people! That’s what radio people do, lol.
To come to the Point. This EP represents what I love. My beats are inspired by Primo, Pete Rock, J Dilla, Black Milk, Dr. Dre and even Timbaland. I’m not trying to go in one direction, I’m trying to be as versatile as possible cause I like a lot of different styles.I don’t care if anyone used a sample before cause I never try to copy a beat, I always try to flip it different. All my beats got my own flava.”
In addition to this project, SoulClap has a lot more stuff in the works for this year. Here’s what he has to say…
“Tony Tigerstlye from LA will come to Germany this spring to record the Soul Occs album. Besides that I’m working on albums with Dundee, Haji P and on tracks with The Perverted Monks, Punchline, Paula Perry, Superstar Quamallah and many more.”

Thanks man!
hmmm, I don’t know if I’ve heard of this guy or not….
It’s the Clapster!
Hey, I love this section of your site. Please make a spot light on Pete Rock, Black Milk or Mike Dean. Those are some of my favs that aren’t already up here. By the way I’m also a producer myself. How can I send you some tracks? I’m in Panama City, Panama (Central America not Florida) and I’m trying to get myself know, hip-hop scene is almost non-existent here.
Thanks Sir Tomy! I was actually in the middle of putting together a spotlight on Pete Rock a few months ago, but got sidetracked and never finished it. Black Milk would be tight too! Never heard of Mike Dean. But yeah man, I’m in Florida myself… Drop me a line and I’ll email you back so we can talk offline.
Thanks again Kev, I actually got a lot of Clicks on myspace the days after you posted it… That was really dope!
No prob man… LOL…. I misread that for a sec. I thought you said you got a lot of CHICKS on myspace! LOL
Yeah, chicks too, lol! Actually, chick clicks!
