Thursday’s Throwback: Mama Said Knock You Out

Mama Said Knock You OutSmokeYYY from That Real Ish has a weekly series that he does called Thursday’s Throwback. He hit me up last week and asked if I’d be willing to do a guest post. I said, “Sure, why not?”. I was pretty excited about the opportunity, since I consider myself old school. There were so many throwbacks that I thought I could highlight, but the first joint that popped in my head was LL Cool J’s “Mama Said Knock You Out”.

I’ve been following LL’s career since I saw him in Krush Groove back in ‘85. Yeah a lot of you cats may say LL has fell off today, but back in the day… LL was the man! He had spunk, style, and charisma.

So why “Mama Said Knock You Out”? This was my high school anthem! Not that I got into a lot of fights, but this was the tape that was constantly played when I was hangin’ with my boys. We definitely let the tape rock til the tape popped! When LL yells, “Don’t call it a comeback… I been here for years!” goosebumps just move up my spine. On top of it all, LL put on a stellar performance of this song on MTV Unplugged, as one of the first rap acts featured on that show. When the band broke down the song and went into the Black Crowes’ “Hand To Handle”, man I went insane!

I wanted to show the video from the unplugged show, but I couldn’t find it anywhere. So enjoy the original video for “Mama Said Knock You Out.”
