Representing one of the chapters in the life of the narrator of TIME:LINE (a concept album based on the lifecycle of pre-life, life, and death), “The Gunshot” depicts the anguish that a mother goes through after her son is murdered by a random passerby. Musically, the song opens with a notable contrast: a syncopated, meandering guitar line on top of a dreamily layered vocal hook. This quickly leads to the chorus, which adds a catchy dance-hall vocal hook and a driving hip-hop beat to the previously established mix, courtesy of beat-man Nicolay. Immediately after the chorus, Kay’s laid-back and still assertive rhymes unveil to the listener the darker facets of reality with lines such as “Mary Magdalene, a tragic scene.” Kay’s rhymes trade off with the memorable chorus throughout the track, satisfying listeners who are eager for both catchy, thought-out songs as well as cerebral hip-hop lyrical delivery.
