What’s crackin’ ya’ll? I apologize for the lack of updates this week. I know there’s been a lot goin on in the hip hop world, but unfortunately I got more in my life than just hip hop. Hopefully these next two posts will make up for all that. One of our loyal readers, Thomas, came through and put together a couple of sample collections for us and asked me to share. Here’s the first one. I’ll get the other up soon.
In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 is the second album from Jay-Z. Released on November 4, 1997, this album brought Jay-Z to the mainstream during the time when Puffy was flooding the airwaves with his “glam” hip hop. This album wouldn’t have been my top choice to do a sample collection on as it is one of my least favorite Jay-Z albums. Interestingly, Jay has said in interviews that this is the one album that he wishes he could go back and redo. There are a few nice gems on here (”A Million and One Questions” and “Imaginary Players”) and this is actually a pretty nice sample set. Thanks again to Thomas for hookin’ this up!
Edit: 5/20 - it’s been a while since we initially posted this set, but as you can see in the comments Thomas found about 4 samples that were missing. We’ve recompiled the set to include the missing files, so download again via the download link or you can just grab the individual tracks in the comments.

Hey kev, do you have any plans on lauching a sample set of any 9th wonder produced album?(Murs - 316: The 9th Edition or Little Brother - The Minstrel Show would be nice)

No, I don’t have any plans as of yet, but I’ll add those to my list.
Dope! Lovin this sample set.
De La Soul
De La Soul is Dead, Buhloone Mind State, Stakes is High, and The Grind Date preferably.
The Tribe one was lovely. This is nice too.

“Sunshine” original sample. Fearless Four sampled this for their song. Still looking for “Car of Love.”
I have “Car of Love” Give me 10 mins!!
That’s right, we were missing that one. Looks like we’ll have to recompile this set.

Three months in the making. Been searching all over the net for that “Car Of Love.” Gotta give props to Chris who post at 4brothers for upping this joint.
The Aaliyah is the scratched vocals and the Sly Fox I just found that added on wiki today….”Car Of Love” is the Jewel!
Im gonna recompile this one. That’s 4 samples we missed! Good lookin out Thomas. I can’t believe we missed the Sly Fox one initially!
“Madison Square Garden Freestyle” by The Notorious B.I.G. & 2Pac
what part of that is sampled in “Where I’m From” ??
Ridge…..that sample was a mistake on my part. carelessness on my part.
That’s cool, it’s still a gem
By the way, your Jay-Z collection is missing the R. Kelly collab albums’ samples, “The Best of Both Worlds” and “Unfinished Business”… If you choose to do it I can submit some of the sampled tracks!
Ridge send me the list for those Jay-Z/R.Kelly albums and I’ll look into them getting them together.
OK so here are the lists, not much samples on those albums I noticed:

Unfinished Business

02. Doug E. Fresh & The Get Fresh Crew - The Show

04. Slick Rick - The Ruler’s Back

-Sampled in “Break Up (That’s All We Do)”

06. Dr. Wong - Sukiyaki

I guess you could put them all together since there’s only 9 tracks combined..
Thanks for the research Ridge. There’s gotta be more samples than that used on the “Best of Both Worlds” discs. The Trackmasters are notorious for sampling. We’ll see if we can compile these though.
