European Artist Spotlight: Dizzee Rascal

Dizzee RascalOnce again it’s on!!! It’s about time to hit u with another HOT European hip hop artist. After spotlighting the hottest lyricist from Germany, it’s time to give it up for a well known artist from the United Kingdom…Dizzee Rascal.Dizzee Rascal (birth name: Dylan Mills) grew up in East London and was born in 1985. He is the son of immigrants from Ghana. As a teenager, he was detained for stealing cars and robbing a pizza deliveryman, and expelled from four secondary schools.

A music teacher saw his musical talent and helped him by accessing him to a school computer where he could produce his first songs on. By the age of fifteen he began MCing at some british raves and made his way to be a well known London underground artist. At this time he became a part of the Roll Deep Crew which also featured Wiley, another talented rapper, but after a conflict with Wiley, Dizzee left the crew and came out with his solo debut Boy In Da Corner in 2003. With Boy In Da Corner, Dizzee was awarded the prestigious Mercury Prize for the best album of 2003. He was the youngest person (at 19) and only the second rapper to do so . Boy In Da Corner was also chosen as the #1 album of the year by Planet Sound.

In 2004 he released his sophmore album Showtime which entered #8 in the UK Charts. In 2007 the rapper & producer released his high anticipated third studio album Maths + English (Dizzee: Math refers to producing, English to writing lyrics) which made it to #7 in the UK Charts. The LP features UGK and Dizzee is also featured on the last UGK release Underground Kingz.

And yeah, he got his own label. The label is called Dirtee Stank. In 2005 he signed his first two talented artists Klass A & Newham Generals.  Dirtee Stank is about promoting gifted artists with “social problems” that might scare off other labels. Dizzee has stated that “the label is about bridging the gap between indies, majors and the street. Stank is the way forwards.”

Dizzee’s vocal performance just can’t be described; he uses a fast style of rapping which blends elements from garage MCing, conventional rap, grime and ragga. His videos always got that something special; a mixture of art, social critcism, and straight rap.

Here are some examples of his music:

Maths + English is going to be released in the US on April 29, 2008 and will contain 2 new tracks, so be on the lookout!!

No matter if you like him or not…SHOW SOME RESPECT.

I agree about Dizzee’s voice being annoying, fair play to him for trying to come with something original tho. Gotta disagree about Mick Skinner being the best British MC, sorry but that is straight up crazy blanket statement! If he’s the best (he has no flow and a fake London accent!), what’s that saying about all the other dope Mc’s (Skinnyman, Chester P, Roots Manuva, Phi life Cypher, Klashnekoff amongst others) who can really give alot of U.S rappers a run for their money?! I strongly urge any peeps out there interested in U.K Hiphop to check out the artists I just mentioned and check for 2 labels - Lowlife Records and Big Dada for some Wicked U.K hiphop Tunes.

There have been a few good names already mentioned here, but tbh it’s just scratching the surface of what’s out there in terms of ukhh… Plan B, Kano and Example, etc., are commercially viable artists with sounds more geared towards a wider listening audience, rather than being truly representative of the emerging and existing talent in the uk scene in my opinion… Foreign Beggars are definitely worth checking out, as are any releases by Task Force, Klashnekoff & Kyza (Terra Firma), Skinnyman (cop Council Estate of Mind if you haven’t already), and Ramson Badbonez, my favourite uk mc at present - his mixtape is a MUST, trust me… Any fans of jumpoff freestyle battles are probably already familiar with Stig of the Dump and Rhyme Asylum (Possessed, etc..) who are also excellent mc’s… Also, Sonnyjim is another v good example of uk talent… It’s worth noting that whereas Dizzee’s older albums are distinctively grime, his latest offering is alot more hip hop sounding - fans of his earlier grime sound might like to check Durrty Goodz, older Wiley releases, etc, etc…
