Was a Stones Throw Rep Posing as Quasimoto?

stonesthrow.jpgI believe this topic has gotten old already and far out of hand. Which is why I hope to wrap up the drama in this last post about the situation. I have received a couple of emails today from readers suggesting that the message I received from Quasimoto’s MySpace account may have in fact been a Stones Throw representative. I cannot say for sure whether it was or not. All I can do is lay out the facts.

This is the complete message that started the drama, from Quasimoto’s MySpace account…

“Thanks for replying. I work with Madlib and Doom both, have done so for 8 years. Much of Madvillainy was written on my back porch and recorded at my house.

The reason I’m reaching out is that I would really appreciate it if you removed this entire page:

http://kevinnottingham. com/myblog/2008/03/14/madvillainy-original-samples/

For reasons I’d rather not get into, but which you can probably guess, pages like this on the internet are no help at all to people like Doom, Madlib, and those that work with them.

At the very least please remove the name Madvillain, the pictures, and references to the tracks on Madvillainy. It would be a help.”

Fact: This message came from Quasimoto’s Myspace account.

Fact: Some artists’ Myspace accounts are often maintained by label reps

Fact: The message speaks of Madlib in third person.

Fact: Madlib has never public stated that he and Quasimoto are the same person.

Rumor: Madlib and Quasimoto are the same person.

Rumor: Madlib does not use a computer for anything other than beatmaking.

Question: Are Madlib and Quasimoto the same person? If so, does Quasimoto speak of Madlib in third person in order make it sound like they are not the same person?

Based on these facts and rumors, I’ll let you decide who the message came from. In all honestly, I didn’t think it mattered until the issue quickly turned into a Madlib-bashing party. Tell me what you think and then let’s put this issue to rest.

what is all the fuss about, stop hating yall- it was probably from Peanut Butter Wolf- why is this getting blown out of proportion, is there no other news? no need to bash Madlib or Stones Throw, they are only putting out great music and trying to protect their asses from being sued for uncleared samples

stop trying to incite something by being irrational, geez

it’s probably egon! nice sample set tho btw… a lot of hate towards madlib for huge lifts, but really who gives..? in the end it’s the end product that matters.. not the means of getting there.. listen to that early gang starr ish.. huge lifts and I never hear people hate on preem for that. this whole ordeal is zzzzzzzzz

Lets just respect stones throws or madlib’s wishes and keep the sample sets coming. Beanie Sigel, AZ, Mobb Deep, and more Ghostface would make great sample sets.

Just continue to post sample sets of albums that already had the samples cleared. It probably was a label rep who sent that message.

Especially if it says the person has worked with Madlib and MF Doom for 8 years and the album was written on his back porch while eating grilled cheese sandwiches and sippin’ on Kool-Aid.

“..the issue quickly turned into a Madlib-bashing party.” - exactly. That’s unfortunate.

But, I don’t think the discussion on its own merit has gotten “out of hand.” Perhaps because Madlib/Quas’s name(s) were tagged as the source, it touched a nerve in some readers. Regardless of the source, it’s a very relevant discussion topic.

Yeah, who ever it was, it really doesn’t matter. I agree with Peter though; the discussion itself was great and is a very relevant subject. Thanks for the article John!

I actually take back my initial comment, which was something like “Lame.” Considering the fact that madlib may not have cleared his samples, I understad completely wanting to cover his ass, or stones throw for that matter. The last thing I would want is for some p2p chasing lawyer to take stones and madlib out in a petty lawsuit…so, props to madlip and props to stones throw and props to Kev for being the only one here who had his head on tight enought to get what was going on to begin with. Right on bro, your work for hip hip deserves much praise.

now that i see the actual message, i dont think there is anything wrong with their request

i think the persons who were offended misunderstood

the message was brief but from what i can tell dude understands what youre trying to do and isnt knockin it

he just doesnt want it to implicate or incriminate him, or anyother artist involved
because in the end that would be wack for the artists, the fans, and everyone in between

i like sample sets, i love hip hop and i love music in general…so these sample sets are amazing to me. i wish it wasnt an issue but whats so hard about complying with dude?

he even said he would be fine if you kept the samples up but without any references to the artists.

Hey, I have no idea what this is about, but your page is dope as hell. In a XXL article from about 3 years ago, Madlib revealed that he and Quasimoto were one in the same. DOn’t know if this helps at all, but that’s what Madlib said in XXL.
