You all REALLY need to check this mixtape out! This is the debut mixtape from Cee & Bekah, who are based out of Melbourne, Australia. They are an MC/singer duo who call their music “soul hop”. Read more about them below, then check the download link at the end of the article.
As far as urban music goes - actually, as far as music in general - Cee & Bekah are unprecedented. Never before has an MC and a female vocalist joined together as a duo, let alone deliver so much soul. But that alone isn’t what separates these two talented artists from the over-crowded pack.
Both Cee-For and Bekah have spent many years mastering their respective crafts, with an exceptional track record between them. They had been working together since they met in 2000, but only decided to form their formidable dual act during their one year, around the world trip in 2004, where they lived and worked in Toronto, Canada for most of that time. This experience had a resounding effect on the two artists, as they immersed themselves in the Toronto urban scene, meeting and collaborating with artists such as Eternia, Kris Blair, JL and The Show, SARS Crew, Beat Chemist and many more, solidifying their international relationships and networks.
Bekah has been singing since she was only four years old, performing at family functions and the like. She began taking lessons when she was eight, which helped her voice develop into the angelic alto you hear today. As Bekah found herself musically, her song writing was developing strongly and she had the opportunity to work with the late Paul Gleeson on a few songs back in 2000.
In 2003, Bekah appeared on Good Morning Australia with Bert Newton, Australia’s highest rated morning show at the time, which attracted a significant amount of attention to this gifted young singer. She has also worked with some of Australia’s most talented artists and producers, including appearing on Ken Hell’s single “Truck” (produced by Styalz Fuego), from DJ Nino Brown’s recent Blazin’ 2007 compilation.
The pure soul that Bekah exudes is unmistakable. Her voice is extremely unique and adaptable, as is evident by her catalogue to date, while she is also an adept musician, with skills at the keyboard, guitar and the cajon, a Latin drum. Her dancing is also a strong point and a passion; something which she feels will be a big part of her music and self-expression. And after going through many personal trials and tribulations in the last year or so, Bekah has never been stronger and more determined to succeed through her music.
Cee has also been doing his thing for a minute, discovering Hip Hop at age twelve, and he hasn’t looked back since. The early days were a soundscape of West Coast acts, which lead to a love affair with East Coast Hip Hop, inspiring him to give all four elements of the culture a crack. Graf wasn’t really his thing, as school suspensions resulted in his attempts; turntablism didn’t quite work out either, as Cee and his homie DJ Swift had a DJ business back in 2000 that ended soon after; and breaking was something he just didn’t really bother with, as his dancing skills are questionable at best. The mic was calling, and Cee picked up.
Freestyling and writing since the age of fifteen, Cee’s style developed with his taste in music, sticking with stanch underground Hip Hop initially, broadening into pretty much anything by 2004, including house, drum & bass, classical, rock, reggae and Spanish language music. Rhyming with a variety of crews, Cee kicked off with the El-A-Mentz in 2001, working with a young 360 and Shayne Hood. In 2003, Cee & producer/MC Revelino formed a crew by the name of Soul District, which made waves in the scene via their performances at the 50 Cent afterparty opening for G-Unit, Obie Trice and DJ Whoo Kid, and as opening act for Tha Outlawz, while SD’s Da Mixtape created a lasting impression through its release in 2004. He has also worked with some of Australia’s tightest and most respected artists and producers, along with a growing list of international acts, constantly expanding the resume.
Cee also is an accomplished journalist, writing for respected publications such as Out 4 Fame, Beat, Inpress, The Brag (Brisbane) and Rhyme & Reason, and is currently the Senior Writer for www.GrooveOn.com.au. With his all-round skills, extensive travels, impeccable flows, tight delivery and relevant and real content, Cee-For is set to be a major force to be reckoned with in Australian Hip Hop.
In 2007, Cee & Bekah bring their newly found world perspective to their music, and while their sounds are completely different if heard independently, together they are simply made for each other. Cee’s flows and Bekah’s harmonies blend together effortlessly, complementing each other and creating a sound unlike any other this country, or the world, has seen to date. Their debut mixtape as a duo, The Soul Movement Volume 1, is the first in a series of mixtapes which will establish their standing at the forefront of ‘Soul Hop’ in Australia. It is set to be a landmark release, cementing these two as names to watch.
