Just to clear this up...

I think Rafi at Oh Word was using some artistic license here to promote the mix: wouldn't take the Pete beef too seriously.

I mean damn, I'd be stoked if PR himself had something to say about my little mix project but I'm afraid that as it stands I don't think he has an opinion on the matter ;)

The one thing about Pete Rock and Premier for that matter is that they have always said that compilations and mixes like this are considered lazy. That is cool as its Pete's his own opinion. He admits to sampling and think we should dig as hard as they do...my thing is ...at least he is not saying "TAKE IT DOWN NOW." Funny thing though is that Kon and Amir have put out mix CD's with sampled records only they are respected for it ???? Its been written that they have provided producers a lot of records as they are diggers too, I wonder if that makes the difference ???

What if your sample source is something well known, like Nautilus? Is someone still sharking your steez then? What about when the same sample has been flipped by numerous people? People may just dig the sample source or decide to flip a different part of the song with possibly a better sample.

Is sampling someone's drum break considered "lazy" in the eyes of the drummer because it was their playing in their kit that was miked up for their use.

I'm not trying to front on you Soul Brother, but does the issue change when you take a couple steps back?

Remember, we all stand on someone else's shoulders, including Pete Rock. Read the Unkut interview where he cites Howie Tee and 45 King.

Again, no disrespect to Pete Rock (who went about it better), but the argument has holes.

http://www.unkut.com/2008/04/pete-rock-the-unkut-interview/

Check his comments on Howie Tee, 45 King, Marley Marl, his "borrowing" from Jay-Z (which could be said about PR borrowing samples, or others "borrowing" "PR's" snares) down to the comment on the 900 Number sample.

It just seems to me that his arguments are flawed in most respects except when it comes to using "his" sources. I know what he's -trying- to get at, but it's a hard point to make without -seeming- like a hypocrite.

I'm not going to call the cat a thief, but how are you going to front on cats who are doing the same thing that you are? You might get your fingers dusty from digging by hand, digital diggers get eye strain from searching high and low for sources.
