Isley Brothers: “Voyage To Atlantis”
From Go For Your Guns (1977)
Snoop Dogg: “Press Play”
From Ego Trippin’ (2008)
Produced by DJ Quik
Big Boi: “Royal Flush”
From Sir Lucious Left Foot (2008)
Produced by Rick Walker & John Ward of Royal Flush Ent.
I was sittin’ around last night thinking we hadn’t done one of these in a while. With all the sample sets we’ve been pumping out, I notice a lot of the same samples being used. It’s nice to compare those tracks with one another and see who flipped the sample better.
I recently noticed two songs that are out now sampled the Isley Brothers song “Voyage To Atlantis”. DJ Quik used it in “Press Play”, off of Snoop Dogg’s new album Ego Trippin’. I’m not a fan of the new Snoop album, but you gotta admit DJ Quik flipped the hell out of this sample.
The Isley Brothers song is also sampled in the new Big Boi track, “Royal Flush”, which was produced by Rick Walker & John Ward of Royal Flush Entertainment. Though the sample is not laced throughout the whole track, it is in there nonetheless.
I don’t think there’s much debate between these two track. This is probably more of a Sample & Example post, a la Hip-Hop Is Read. At any rate, here’s your sample history lesson for the day!

Few bring more energy than Kurrupt for real…
Good post…
I will say the Snoop song completely smashes the Big Boi serving and even makes me want to go listen to his new album
But the original Isley easily holds sway over all.
Very true… thanks for commenting!
easily the Snoop - but don’t get too excited about the LP because that’s the only track that DJ Quik fully produced and incidently a lot of people feel is the best track on the album, me included.
it’s a decent enough cd and Quik mixed the whole thing, but Press Play stands out - there’s so many stereo effects and tricks going on in that beat, not to mention the genius sample
what about the vocals that fade in and out throughout the verses on ‘press play’? i dont think that short version of ‘voyage to atlantis’ has the part that quik used for that, but here it is ;d

OMG! My boy and I had this EXACT discussion like 3 months ago…I stan for Quik as a producer (I’m a cali girl) but I respect Mr. DJ’s producer too as a die-hard Outkast stan. I’m just excited someone else noticed this…now I’m going to search all your other posts like this. Thanks!
