“Diggin’ in da crates… diggin’ in da crates… all around the Net we diggin’ in da crates.” Ha-ha, that’s a little song I just came up with! Codester over at Grits and Porgies hit me up with a sample set he posted to his site a while back… Brand Nubian’s One For All. Hears what has had to say…
One of the main reasons I started this blog was to show my love and appreciation for crate-digging. One of my favorite things about hip-hop music has always been figuring out, and keeping track of, which artists and songs are frequently sampled. I love the range of music and different influences that can be found on any particular album, and it goes to show just how creative hip-hop music really is. I’ve never viewed sampling as stealing music from others. Rather, I view it as one being inspired by another’s work; taking something that already exists and reinterpreting it. Brand Nubian’s One For All is a great example of the many different musical styles that might influence the sound of a particular album–ranging from James Brown to Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians.
One For All is one of hip-hop’s most important and influential albums. Here, Grand Puba, Sadat X, and Lord Jamar didn’t simply deliver battle-raps and braggadocio rhymes. Instead, they turned their attention to black unity and social consciousness, and their message and sound helped influence the “Native Tongue-style” sound that so many artists would try to duplicate in the ’90s. I’ve been working long and hard to find these tracks and now I’m happy to say, Brand Nubian, One For All Original Samples is finally complete. I hope you enjoy it.
