This Is Hip Hop Remix Contest Part II: Week 3

This Is Hip Hop Remix Contest Part II: Week 3

Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there! I wanted to get Week 3 up before things get poppin’ today. I know a lot of you are wondering… “what about the winner for week 1?”. Well, we’re almost there. I just ask you guys to be patient. If you guys didn’t submit so many damn hot remixes, it wouldn’t be so hard on us! Anyway, you still have until 3pm Eastern Time today to submit for week 2… lots of heat goin’ on over there. With today being a holiday, I’ll probably be a little late in getting the new music player and everything up tonight, but it’ll be there.

Don’t forget to read the rules; especially if you’re new…

The Rules

This Week’s Track

This week we’re taking the gloves off… no stipulations. It was fun last week, but you gotta leave it open ended every once and a while. Especially when you’re going up against the acapella we’re about to drop on you! Don’t worry, we’ll be bringing more sample stipulations back in future weeks. But this week, the production is wide open for you to remix Common Sense’s “I Used To Love H.E.R.” Released in 1994 on Common’s second album Resurrection, this track was produced by No I.D. and sampled George Benson’s “The Changing World”. Download the acapella and album version below and good luck with this classic!

The cut-off to submit your remix is
Sunday, June 22, 2008 @ 3:00pm EDT

Now let me explain this one to you all… I’ve been playing Mario all weekend on SNES, and cant get the song out of my head… So when I got this challenge with Common, I had to try to fusíon him with Mario - I dont want to offend anyone, or take this challenge for granted - All I wanted, was to fusíon my tro favorite things… Hip Hop and Games… I hope you enjoy this piece…

yo GC, great idea with your remix… i mean, snoops beat drop and that another gangster one in the end! nice imagination, but, once u use samples that already were used in the same way, ur remix looses credibility… the samples, the drums, etc! anyway, still a gud remix (very gud remix)

TEK INTERN… its off the hook yo! best remix so far… (drums like Madlib! gud!)… whats the sample yo?

Once again, fire coming from all angles! I am really liking how this week is coming so far!

Onemic - Thanks for the love!

S.T.T.R.E.S.S. - Sounds like the perfect beat to reminisce over, great fireside vibe!

tek_the_intern - Beautiful chopping of the pianos, and the Boom-Bap drum break chop works well with it! Great job!

Tuche - My entire concept was based on remembrance, so I purposefully chose instantly recognizable breaks (i.e. substitution and the main drum break) and memorable samples (i.e. Snoop and “gangsta” style beat). I haven’t heard a remix to it before, so if it was done before I had no prior knowledge. I always appreciate input though, so thanks! :)

Isbjerg - I am ALL about seventies samples, so your remix is right up my alley!

Can’t wait to hear more! Awesome job everyone!

S.T.R.E.S.S., I like the vibe of yours, it’s mellow but sinister, like some good underground stuff

Isbjerg, that Mario joint cracked me up! I know some Mario freaks that would probably bump this all day every day.. as for your ‘real’ contribution, it’s crazy! I love the sample

damn, comment got cut off, I was gonna say something about Fiasco: man, I don’t wanna hate, but the rappin is way off the beat. I used to have the same problem (still have it at times), so what I do now is listen to the original first and try to recreate the drum pattern, listen to both at the same time, and once I have the correct tempo, I can still change the kick & snare layout as I wish. keep grindin

yo Isbjerg, great guitar solo and riffs in ur sample, you could take advantege of that and slice the sample (you can use Fruity Slicer of FruityLoops!)!

Ok, I’ve had time to listen to the rest since last comment, and again great job on remixes!

Fiasco - agreed w what others have said, but I love the fact you used the Endtroducing DJ Shadow sample, and if you resync the lyrics I think it will work well!

Poe Mack - Sample reminds me of 70’s Blaxploitation films, which I LOVE! Plus the tambourine matched the beat perfect! Great job!

HeadNodda - Love the piano vibe, drums have that punch I like a lot (you’ll notice it a LOT in my production - love the BOOM BAP!) Vibe to me is a futuristic daydream! :)

Digumsmak - Enjoyed the chops, smokey is classic! Maybe add some bass to complement the chops (just personal preference)? Great job!

RNP - LOVE the intro (fits the song PERFECT!) same as Digum, maybe some bass to complement the chops too (again, personal production preference)? Nice!

ill-mannered - Reminds me of classic David Axelrod or Phantom of the Opera! Very sinister! Guitars are a nice touch too! Great job!

    Keep it going gang! :)

Great remix.HeadNodda, love the way you used “she’s the love of my life” in the hook.Digumsmak and RNP,nice bouncy, fell good remixes. Ill-mannered,thanks on the props and your remix had that Hip-Hop meets Rock/Mash up vibe.Nice work bringing a different flavor to the contest.Altas, keep working on your sync and you will be aight because the track was nice as hell.In the past,I’ve heard songs with almost similar samples done almost similar ways with a slight change between them and I still bumped them (case in point-”the James Brown sampling era)(K.I.M.P.)

Yo, does anybody know the exact bpm for this track. 3 different programs are giving me completely different readings. Heeeeeeelp! This acapella is driving me nuts. Thanks!

  55. G.C.
    Posted June 18, 2008 at 12:08 pm | Permalink

Onemic - I use FL, and when I make beats I stretch the working area to 8 ticks per measure and 64 ticks per bar. This allows me not only to hit the natural “half-beat” between 4 and 6, but also to fine tune the BPM (with my settings you need to speed up the BPM to 4x).

For my entry, I used 365 BPM, which translates to 91.25 BPM real time. I did, however, have to turn down the pitch of the vocals by 0.1% to match my BPM, and I did have a similar problem at first with the vocals “running away”.

Hope that helps! Good luck! :)

Sky High - LOVE the intro! Ha! Beat has a sense of marching forward…and the sample sounds familiar - modern classical?

snd - Chorus and mix are FIRE! I am a sucker for the seventies! And strings to boot!

GooseBumps - Is that Bob James’ “Feel Like Making Love” I hear? Very nice vibe, like a stroll down memory lane! Vocals kinda run away from the track towards the end.

I never got into Common too much in the 90’s, so it was refreshing to try something I wasn’t too familiar with. The storytelling is dope, but the lyrics felt quite sad so I chose Millie Jackson’s “If loving you is wrong, I don’t want to be right” for the main sample. Even though I did have some help with the bpm allocation, I still struggled a little, but one small victory at a time. One-

Onemic, I’m at work atm but I am looking forward to hearing what you brought to the table!

Common has kept in tune with the culture and movement of true hip hop since before Ressurection. His music speaks to people on numerous levels, and, to those who pay close attention, delivers a depth in his lyrics almost unmatched in the game (here is an excerpt from “Play Dis” from Saukrates’ “The Underground Tapes”):

Related by a tree of drama, I advance on a branch of respect and honor. A patient of the ill state (Illinois), send it in trauma! Never been one to side with homa (homocide)…

Onemic, I would go and take a serious listen to “Like Water For Chocolate”. Arguably one of his best albums, the flow of the album is very natural as he takes you on a journey in a way only he can. The beats are very homegrown and fit his style perfectly. Its an album you can listen to front to back, and notables on the album include “Message to Assata” (a song about the struggle for people of color to be free), “Thelonius”, “Ghetto Heaven”, and “Sixth Sense” (a DJ Premier banger!).
Anyways, listen to Common in any form you can (even his Electric Circus album was pretty good!) Peace!

Yes, yes, y’all! I just found this blog/site last week while searching for DJ Premier samples! Now THIS SITE is exactly what a cat like me has been searching for. Much props on the whole site set up and content!

Here’s my submission for the COMMON “I Used to Love her” Remix contest!
    http://www.zshare.net/audio/139887516c998786/

It’s my first time doing a remix with acapella vocals so I’ll admit it took me awhile to get the darn vocals to match up on ABLETON LIVE 7. Does anyone else use Ableton? I’d appreciate any advice or feedback.

    From a fellow Florida resident!

Big up to Kev for these comps - I’m lovin’ it. My remix was a little hurried so I just wanted some strings in my mix and try and match the flavor of the lyrics, if that makes any sense.
