Yes, yes ya’ll… we’re into week 5 ya’ll. Apparently the Nas acapella from last week made it a little difficult on most people. That wasn’t my intention and I’m sorry for the headaches. Who was it that almost threw their equipment out their window? I promise we’ll keep that into consideration when judging this week. I haven’t listened to any of the Nas remixes yet, but I can’t wait to hear what you all cooked up.
Don’t forget to read the rules; especially if you’re new…
This Week’s Track
This week we gotta keep it moving. That’s right, we’re throwing another sample stipulation at you. This one came out of the blue to me the other day as I had been listening to a lot of Stevie Wonder last week. So I said, “why not”? For this week’s remix you must include a sample from one of Stevie Wonder’s songs. He’s got a huge library, so you’ll have plenty of tracks to choose from.
Picking an acapella that would stand up to Stevie was kinda tough. I have really been feeling in the summer mood lately, so I thought back to one of my favortie summer songs from the 90s. “Summertime” was the obvious choice, but couldn’t find an acapella. So I went with my second choice… Skee-Lo’s “I Wish”. I know some of you young cats are probably like,”who”? But trust me, this one hit wonder was the jam 13 years ago.
So anyway, have at it… download the tracks below and good luck!
The cut-off to submit your remix is
Sunday, July 6, 2008 @ 3:00pm EDT.

I Wish with Stevie Wonder…. Too easy…. Nice Challenge Kevin.. Imma try to find a way to combine the two artists in a very special way…. Good luck to yall… I will think outside the box - I know GC, STTRESS and some of the other cats are ready to bring the heat, so I wanna do this right…
I knew someone would put the two together. Hopefully we don’t get a bunch of people sampling “I Wish”. Good luck ya’ll!
I have stevie wonder accepllas, if I used just a vocal sample would that still count?
Sure, why not? Anyone else object?
YES!!!! stevie wonder is probably my favorite artist of all time. all genres included. this will be fun 4 me…..
Yo whut up. Peace to all the ill producers up in the spot. ( whut up Dutch, GC, s.t.t.r.e.s.s.,C17 and everybody else )
Kevin you CRAZY for picking this Skee lo joint. I was bugging extra hard cause i had’nt heard this track in YEARS.
Here’s my joint.
http://www.zshare.net/audio/14437093d59e280f/
I flipped “visions” and clipped a vocal from “Jesus children of America”
The original skee lo track had a happy vibe to it. So i figured let me go for a more depressing feel but still let the joint jingle a bit.
Hope yall feel it.
Peace
Oh by the way, the bpm i used was 99.
stevie wonder!!! good look kev!!
Whats up world,Whats up Kev.Talk about A track thats posted on the back of a milk carton HA HA HA!!!!Yea, hat track did hit hard when it came out.A real feel good joint.Yo Tokyo, what up.I’m feeling the way you flipped that beat, you really on your way with that sampling thing. As for me….well i’m a W.I.P.(work in progress). With mine,I tryed to stay within the same mood as the original, for the most part I think(probably till I got to the last verse)I sampled 1.My Cherie Amore 2.Overjoyed 3.Living In The City 4. Pastime Paradise. Not my best work, but comments are appreciated
Peace!

Whoooo! I LOVE this song!!
Thanks for putting up the acapella.
Ive been watching and listening to you guys the last few weeks, but I think this one is definitely my song to join you here
Sttress: I really feel the second verse. The beat on this part reminds me of good old Masta Ace Inc. songs!
nice one, S.T.T.R.E.S.S. You’re chanelling the Pharcyde on that first verse yo.
Shotouts to OneMic & CrystalEYE.
Thanks fellas
Yo! S.T.T.R.E.S.S. and Tokyo Cigar I’m REALLY feeling ya’ll remixes, and S.T.T.R.E.S.S. I really like how you used different samples in the song. In addition, I don’t do a lot of sampling so this is going to be a challenge for me, and also I have been studing 9th Wonder’s music for the past weeks now…he’s my favorite when it comes to sampling. So, S.T.T.R.E.S.S. if you or anybody else on this blog have some sampling tips for me feel free to leave a comment or comments.
THANKS!
Thanks Bennie for the props.I,m not really an expert on sampling myself but what I do is take a piece of a song that I like and chop that up and make sure it doesnt have elements in it that will conflict with what i,m trying to use it for (for ex.)strong drum beats /unless you’re going to use them. But who you should reach out to is G.C. aka Grand Chopper HA!
YO,G.C.,if you can help Bennie out
Yo s.t.t.r.e.s.s. and Bennie thanks for the love.
Yo s.t.t.r.e.s.s. my favorite part was the second verse, the for the city loop was a nice fit for the joint.
For Bennie i feel you cause this is the fourth sampled beat i’ve flipped. As far as sampling tips go, i try and Chop and reconstruct. Sometimes a straightforward loop has all the elements you need and some chunky drums add the perfect touch to complete it ( for example Primo flipping the joint he used for Fat Joe’s That White ) It’s really up to you wheather you want to twist the sounds or enhance them.
Even if your going for a loop it’s a good idea to chop it up to make sure you get the parts to lock in with the drums your using. ( i read that in an Alchemist interview )
There really is no rules to it except making sure it makes your head nod.
I hope that helped you a little.
Peace
Yo Tokyo, respect.Yea I would say that Living in the city sample fits closer to the original concept of the joint as well.
Good looking out!
Hmmm…. might give it a try. 1st joint i’ll be in on diz site.
Alright ya’ll, here’s my remix:
http://www.zshare.net/audio/144954549fe6d932/
Intro/Chorus: “Summer Song”
Main Verse: “Superstition” (chopped to all HELL ha!)
Love the concept and the restriction this week! This was a fun one, hope you all enjoy it!
Tokyo - I love the vibe yet again! Even when sampling, you get that mood music down PAT! Rimshot is a great touch too!
Sttress - Love the switch-ups! Intro worked well (That was one of the first samples I chopped up btw) and I agree, the first verse is very Pharcyde! Ha ha Grand Chopper - funny you mentioned that, wait till you hear how I chopped Superstition! (I noticed you use the fade out during the chorus, I love using that - great touch!)
Bennie - What Tokyo said was spot on. Sometimes you can have a perfect loop that needs no enhancements (a LOT of producers in industry do this) and just loop the sample with a drum track on top. I used this technique for the Common remix from Week 3. Others take portions of it and play them like instruments (like I did for this week’s submission during the main verse). It all depends on what style you are trying to express and how you want the song to play out. My best advice is to experiment and start with just samples laced with drum tracks. Once you get comfortable with that, try breaking a sample into three parts and mixing them up under the drum. A lot of times I will do that and one combination will make me go “Oooooh THAT’S a winner…” Other times you can hear the chops in your head just from hearing the original sample. Just practice, practice, practice, and it will become second nature! Good luck!
BTW, 97.25 BPM with vocals down one note and pitched +0.5.
Here’s my Remix:
http://www.zshare.net/audio/144954549fe6d932/
Intro/Chorus: “Summer Song”
Main Verse: “Superstition” (chopped to all HELL ha!)
Love the concept and the restriction this week! This was a fun one, hope you all enjoy it!
*edit* Intro/Chorus: “Summer Soft”
Yo GC that joint is ill !!! Congratulations son, u made me step my game up with that beat of yours ! Supestition sampling is really good…
Peace to all contesters
Here’s mine. I used “Boogie On Regggae Woman” and threw in a Parliament sample too for the fun of it
http://www.zshare.net/audio/1450341189cbcd13/
Tokyo, STTRESS, GC - your joints are ill! GC, that’s some crazy chopping there, you skilled as hell!
Yo Tommylux that beat had that fly prince paul and de la soul in 89 vibe. Cats was about to pull out the skates and hit the roller rink to do the uptown boogie. ( retarded switch ups too )
GC nice joint the part you flipped for the hook was my favorite part of the beat.
The funny thing is when i remixed this joint and gave it a darker vibe Skee lo kinda reminded me of Lucy Ford era Slug ( the down on luck rhymes and his delivery too just not as complex ) I also hear it in the first part of s.t.t.r.e.s.s. remix
Yo Kevin like i said you crazy for this joint. What made you pick skee lo of all cats and why stevie wonder. It’s bugged out cause it wound up making perfect sense.
s.t.t.r.e.s.s. nice job again. The first verse sample caught up to the second verse in terms of illness. It just hit me that the third verse was the gangsters paradise loop ( whut up coolio ) but thats my least favorite part of the track cause the other two parts were too chunky.
One
Damn, G.C. does it again! Mannn, you set the bar each week on these remixes! I love the dirty drum sound, the chopped sampling and you even mix in the Pharcyde for the “Passin Me By” part of the song!
Lovin’ those drums man!
Here we go again… On this joint I used Stevie’s version of: “Papa was a rolling stone”. He’s doing the whole vocoder thing on this one, and since it ain’t some weak ass T-Pain shit, I think y’all feel it, too. Some real tight stuff so far. Keep it moving, yo! One-
http://www.zshare.net/audio/1451320590a27f39/
S.T.T.R.E.S.S…..I like how you changed up the samples, let the beat drop out at the break, and it all just flows smooooothly.
One Mic! LOVE that sample choice and how you laid it out! That shows you had to dig a bit to find it. The track also def has a West Coast vibe to it. Diggin it! Brings back the ZAPP/Roger Troutman vocoder!
Damn, these are ALL good so far! TommyLux mixin in Parliament! Classic! great track!
Here we go again.
The sample: Tuesday Heartbreak
Tried to keep w/ the summertime feel

g.c feeling that intro alot
tokyo cigar, love the vibe switch. we forget the he’s rhyming about his sad state as funny as it may sound. way to pick up on that. plus you’re taking more chances and it’s definitely working for you.
s.t.t.r.e.s.s., digging the change up’s. my attention was peaked the whole time.
gc, you could’ve found some way to just loop that superstition intro, but that would’ve been too easy huh? going ginsu on it the way you did was genius. plus, that quick pharcyde vocal was clever as well.
one mic, disgustingly funky and very fitting to both the original and the stevie twist required.
there is absolutely no one off point at all on here. i hope i don’t change that. i’ll be posting much closer to the deadline as i am months upon months out of practice and all of you raise that bar so high.
Once again the usual suspects doing what they do best. G.C, Tokyo Cigar, S.T.R.E.S.S murkin the remixes..
I’m a lil intimidated after listening to yall put it down this week. I gotta top that? wow
anyway back to lab
Whats up again fellas.I’m feeling whats being done with the remixes.Garcia,G.C.,Tommylux,thanks for the props and Tokyo, thanks again for your feelings about the layout. It is always good to here different opinions.Yo G.C.,you hacked up those organ and piano pieces HA.Another chopping extravaganza!Tommylux, that was like funk jam fest with a twist.Nicely put together.OneMic,that was like the return of Zapp, but I felt that the vox kind of overpowered the verses, but fits real nice in the hook.Still a good track.Phurcat, that had a summertime block party vibe to it.
Later
C17, thanks for that. You’re no pushover, so stop playing ha,ha,ha.Good looking out,now go do the damn thing.
Nanigan,preciate that for real
Just found this site and yall just got some more competition!!!
Kept that old flavor plus a happy Stevie Wonder Sample.
http://www.zshare.net/audio/14535808d2f4bb9c/
Thanks for the advice G.C., My remix will be up July 2
No prob Bennie, can’t wait to hear your work!
I am at work atm and haven’t had the time to hear everyone yet but from what I am reading it sounds like fire is being brought from all angles!
Thanks for the love and props! Nanigan, I can’t wait to hear your take on the remix! One love fam!
G.C. You are da man that’s a cold remix, and keep up the good work.

i usually dont listen to other remakes before i do my own but this time i couldnt resist.. i mean.. its “Skee Low” haha…
damn G.C. u kiillin once again… haha.. dope shit hermano… n i have u know i voted for u on the last one.
tommy i love ur flip man…
phurcat… rediculous… i love it…
im gettin ready to work on mine so hopefully ill have somethin up either today or tomorrow…
YO One Mic God is on your side with this one. MORE FIRE! The vocal chops and vocoders got that funk on lock. Incredible.
YO Nanigan whut up. Damn me you and GC in the same spot again. It feels like the attic days again. Yo all i gotta say is cats out here were going crazy to “cadillac seat talk” so i know you bout to pull out the heat rock.
waddup y’all, thanks for the love Tokyo, Garcia, Nanigan and S.T.T.R.E.S.S. I just want to let y’all know that I didn’t have to do too much to the samples I’ve used. It was just one of those magic cratediggin moments. If you guys have a chance check out Stevie’s “Papa was a rolling stone” on Youtube. The clip is ridiculous, I was just the lucky bastard that found it first!
Keep bringing the heat! One-
well here it is:

the keys are chopped and diced from “ribbon in the sky” and the occasional strings are ripped out of “village ghetto land.”
all feedback is appreciated. this is the first attempt i’ve made at producing in many a moons, let alone remixing. i probably would still be slacking if it wasn’t for this friendly competition, so peace to everyone for the inspiration and motivation.
Hi there superproducers…. Havent forgotten about you nor Skeelo, but I’ve been digging for that little extra thing to bring it over the top… The risk here is that you bring the fire with these remixes, so I gotta fuel up and step up a notch to battle you guys….
yo tommylux, I just peeped your track. dude, that track is off the hook. I wouldn’t be surprised if this one takes it home. I feel like having a house party right now. this one is gonna stay in heavy rotation.
Tokyo - Word, it’s been a MINUTE since we all linked up…I still keep “G.C.’s Attic Sessions” on constant play…
Also, heads are bringing it this week! I love the vocoder One Mic, I am definitely feeling the chops from Mike Deck, and I love the “What’s Happening?” vibe from Tommylux! (Or is it “What’s Happening Now?” lol)
Keep em coming, I am loving this!
*If this is a repost, I apologize - my Firefox has been kicking out my posts and I am reverting to IE..ugh*
Yeah, I don’t know what’s up G.C., but my spam filter loves to block your messages.
Thanks One Mic, if my track makes you feel like partying, it’s achieved its purpose
all submissions so far are dope in their own way, and I bet there’s still more bangers to come, judging from the way things been going down the weeks before. Plus, there’s new people on board every week, so this competition is definitely crazy
Phurcat, that remix is fresh! You definitely kept that summertime vibe, it makes me wanna jump in the car and pump it on the way to the swimming pool. Plus you worked the sample well. mad props
Yo OneMic, nice vocoder thing going on there, somehow I’d see Del rappin over that one
G.C. I voted for you for Nas is Like, beat is fire and fits the song really well…. close second was Rp Beats, Tek the Intern and Shabeatz all your beats were fire too! Tough choice
Yo!
Well, dunno, what to write, knowing, that all of my remixes were maybe too “different” (and of course not as good as the others). This time it is extra-difficult (for you and your ears, haha), as I made a kind of mash-up of 4 songs, which is sounding not really hiphop.
Hope that there is still someone out there, who might like it…
http://www.zshare.net/audio/14576204daee4195/
For the instrumental part, I ONLY used
Stevie Wonders “Superstition” - for drums and the refrain
and “Uptight! (Everyting’s Alright) - for verses
plus “Clear Mud” by a band named ”Calliope” – as extra drums in the 3 rd verse
Again, there we no other sounds added, I just used these song, so it took me a lot of chopping and usage of effects.
Feedback appreciated. I’m gonna drop some notes on the others remixes as soon, as I’ve heard them.
Thanks and take care,
Ill-mannered.
well whoops. let’s try this again…

Here is my remix to I wish.

Remix by Isbjerg
Trompet : Wondering
Drums : Master Blaster
Perc : Soul Bongo
Break : When You Wish Upon A Star
Intro : I Wish by Robyn
I sat all days wondering and pondering - How should I make it work, and I must admit… I had a few tryouts without any good results, but this thing got me nodding and got my son to raise and singalong…. I hope you enjoy…
done-ski. i used “never had a dream come true.” one of my favs. i transformed it alot tho……i wanted a kinda silly, uppety feel to the track, which took some work cuz stevie’s so soulful and emotional. but anyways, i think it worked! here it is…….STEADY!!!
http://www.zshare.net/audio/146031728fff36a0/
Yo i’m like Tony the tiger-they’re grrrrrrreat!ha ha.Mike Deck, you flipped the hell out of that Cherie Amore vocal.nice work.Ill-Mannered,you had a whole bunch of different flavor in there.Nice way to put your own little twist in it.Nanigan, you gave it that roaring 40s jazz club touch to it.good work.Bennie, you made that track laid back,Ribbon in the sky is one of my favorite Stevie songs.Yo Isbjerg, that track had a Fiesta vibe to it.PARTYTIME!!!!Good job.Info, there was nothing funny about that remix. That track hit hard on some B-Boy shit.Good feel.Everybody is still throwing gas on the fire.
Peace!
Sorry gang, a lot of my posts are being kicked by Firefox, so let’s try this in IE…
Ill-mannered - Interesting vibe, It reminds me of neo-Tokyo Akira or the Harajuku district in Japan…like the horns mixed in too! The offset of the vocals actually works, especially the hook! Nice touch!
Nanigan - Great to hear your work again! The vibe is very cool, the seventh-note melodies are well chopped! You haven’t lost your touch man, great work!
Bennie - Your track seems to skip a lot, I have to let it load for a significant amount before it will even begin to play…I like the beat, Ribbons in the Sky was one I was considering for sampling…you did a nice job finding a chunky sample, try switching it up now and again so it breaks the continuous loop!
Isbjerg - Love the originality! You did a great job chopping the individual instruments and playing them out. Has a Brazilian vibe to it, now I feel like sitting at the beach! Props!
infO - That track is straight industrial 80s! Like the drums, the background (organ?) and the whole vibe works well! Good job!
I am loving all the entries, it is always so amazing to me how different and impressive each person’s individual vision pans out when given a blank canvas to work with! Big props to everyone here!
http://www.zshare.net/audio/14630860f46e8bca/
Peace guys- sorry I missed last week. That acapella was too much for me, but you guys ripped it up. Some real smooth stuff up here. I used a cover of superstition by Sergio Mendes- for all who havent submitted, there’s a lot of great Stevie Wonder interpretations that I recommend checking out.
Thanx for the props… Right back at ya… Its great to have this competition to dig in… Im dealing with producing at the moment and learning this craft well… I find new ways to use sounds every day….
Everyone Thanx for the P’s. I’m only using my god given talent. Didn’t get to upload last week, but looking up the the weeks to come.
p.s. who ever used “reggae woman”, I’ve used that sample too.
100
Wow…is all I gotta say, everyone is raising the bar so much higher every week. The caliber of talent on here is ridiculous! Didn’t make last weeks, almost had it, but it wasn’t quite there…Anyways here’s my joint. Sample is young Stevie’s “Until You Come Back To Me (Thats What I’m Gonna Do)”. Lemme know what y’all think. Props everyone!
http://www.zshare.net/audio/14638942a8864a0a/
Really feeling these entries.DutchMasters, you gave your remix that rock appeal, reminds me a little of a Just Blaze track.Nice.Manz,I like how you kept that old school vibe to it.Lets keep making good music!
Peace
Peace S.t.t.r.e.s.s., i tried to go big; if you listen to Skee-Lo’s other stuff, he is the king of the smoothed out lite g funk. I couldn’t touch it, so I tried something else. That intro of yours is nice (I don’t know what to sing along with), plus living for the city- I’ve wanted to do something with that for a while. You’re toying with us at the end though- I wanted the full blown gangsta’s paradise! Nice touches; I’m a big fan of a mashup like that.
Thanks Dutch!
wat up world…dj juls representing Ghana, West Africa to the fullest!!!!ok….to be honest, im not that much of a stevie wonder fan…i tried to flip some of the stuff i had..but i had no choice but to sample stevie wonder’s “i wish”……lol…i think u might like it though….holla at the kid like bad parents
heres the link…..
http://www.zshare.net/audio/14653394f2d62793/
good job, juls. It’s a pretty simple layout, and the sample choice was obvious too, but the track has a really nice flow and swing to it. Keep it moving - Senegal in the house! One-
Here is my entry
I sampled “Ai No, Sono”. I hope I did Stevie justice
http://www.zshare.net/audio/14662413d066dc9a/
GC, kinda glad you didn’t use ribbons in the sky because you would’ve flipped that way iller than i did or ever could.
Yo C17, that was tight. Totally different to what everybody else has put forward. The track sounds like a Timbaland joint. One-
Keep that flavor coming.
Juls, that was Skee-lo and Stevie Wonder hooking up for a remake.Nice job.
C17,you gave that remix the Far East vibe.Nice switch up
Later!
shouts out to One Mic and S.T.T.R.E.S.S

http://www.zshare.net/audio/1471470065d3c0e8/
Hi everybody!
When i red the idea of mixing Stevie with Skeelo´s song the first Wonder´s song that came to my mind was “Part Time Lover”. Both songs give me good vibrations, so… i just put a bd, a sd and almost nothing else.
I was tempted to force the sample to fit to a 4×4 schema but then i realized that when something mix perfectly there´s nothing else to do but let it flow and just bump the percussion.
Hope you get the feeling and clap your hands to it.
Peace and i love this site! Props to all producers and real hip hop lovers.
Link: http://www.zshare.net/audio/14714453b83f2b99/
I’m glad I got put on to this site.
Here is my offering to the contest
http://www.zshare.net/audio/147195808f9c6ed0/
I sampled Stevie’s “If You Really Love Me”
Then I threw in Eddie Murphy skit on Stevie to round it out.

El Maese, can’t hate- I really like that remix. I’ve been listening to Girl Talk and thehoodinternet- it’s a dope fast paced mashup just like those two. Peace man.
right back at cha juls…. And biggup to Kev for doing this and keepin us on the edge…
The main sample I used was from “Too High” with a few bits and pieces from some other tracks and give it a funky feel. I’ll have to listen to the other tracks when Kev puts up the player.
Peace.

Whats up fellas, glad to be back online. Its been crazy around here.Storms hit and kinda f**cked the area up!!!!But anyway,
Kinetic,that track was funked out.
Abstrakt, that was a nice use of the sample.
SND,yours was in chill mode.
El Maese, you definitely kept the 80s feel to the remix.
Nickelz,that was a good concept.
Keyz,I was feeling how you warped the sample in and out.
Everybody,keep putting in work.
Peace!
Hi there, here’s my entry for week 5:

wow there is some good things happenin here. i wasn’t even gonna try but now i just have to just to see if i could get a vote against you guys. i’ve been playin the list at a subway store on my campus at the university of RI
THEY LOVE IT.
http://www.zshare.net/audio/14786136abab8e56/
my dad used to play stevie wonder “you will know” from a dubbed tape that his mom (my grandmother) sent in the mail everyday before his PC game in 74. i just thought it was kinda significant that it sounded like the answer to skeelos i wish. anyways here it is, hope u like it, lookin out for feedback thanks.
o and its got a sample from ribbons in the sky 2, just cuz the youtube video was coo, you gotta check them soul train joints out, its better than most tv now.
damnit this is the wrong one…aw well, its just missin the ribbons sample, its still ight
Phew. This was harder than I thought. It took me 3 times doing everything all over agein until I was happy with my Remix. But here it is.
I took Stevies “Come back as a flower” (1979, Journey through the secret life of plants) plus some claps from “Cash in your face” (Hotter than July, 1980).
http://www.zshare.net/audio/147995512b206ebb/
I tried to pick a sample of a different flavor and went with Stevie’s song called, “Kiss Lonely Good-Bye”, and then played/chopped it up for the verse portions of the song. It just seemed to fit with the ladies Skee-lo was always wishin’ for.
Any feeback is welcome!
