This Is Hip Hop Remix Contest Part II: Week 5

This Is Hip Hop Remix Contest Part II: Week 5

Yes, yes ya’ll… we’re into week 5 ya’ll.  Apparently the Nas acapella from last week made it a little difficult on most people.  That wasn’t my intention and I’m sorry for the headaches.  Who was it that almost threw their equipment out their window?  I promise we’ll keep that into consideration when judging this week.  I haven’t listened to any of the Nas remixes yet, but I can’t wait to hear what you all cooked up.

Don’t forget to read the rules; especially if you’re new…

The Rules

This Week’s Track

This week we gotta keep it moving.  That’s right, we’re throwing another sample stipulation at you.  This one came out of the blue to me the other day as I had been listening to a lot of Stevie Wonder last week. So I said, “why not”?  For this week’s remix you must include a sample from one of Stevie Wonder’s songs.  He’s got a huge library, so you’ll have plenty of tracks to choose from.

Picking an acapella that would stand up to Stevie was kinda tough.  I have really been feeling in the summer mood lately, so I thought back to one of my favortie summer songs from the 90s.  “Summertime” was the obvious choice, but couldn’t find an acapella.  So I went with my second choice… Skee-Lo’s “I Wish”.  I know some of you young cats are probably like,”who”?  But trust me, this one hit wonder was the jam 13 years ago.

So anyway, have at it… download the tracks below and good luck!

The cut-off to submit your remix is
Sunday, July 6, 2008 @ 3:00pm EDT

Yo whut up. Peace to all the ill producers up in the spot. ( whut up Dutch, GC, s.t.t.r.e.s.s.,C17 and everybody else )

Kevin you CRAZY for picking this Skee lo joint. I was bugging extra hard cause i had’nt heard this track in YEARS.

    Here’s my joint.

    http://www.zshare.net/audio/14437093d59e280f/

I flipped “visions” and clipped a vocal from “Jesus children of America”

The original skee lo track had a happy vibe to it. So i figured let me go for a more depressing feel but still let the joint jingle a bit.

    Hope yall feel it.

    Peace

Oh by the way, the bpm i used was 99.

Ive been watching and listening to you guys the last few weeks, but I think this one is definitely my song to join you here ;)

Sttress: I really feel the second verse. The beat on this part reminds me of good old Masta Ace Inc. songs!

Yo! S.T.T.R.E.S.S. and Tokyo Cigar I’m REALLY feeling ya’ll remixes, and S.T.T.R.E.S.S. I really like how you used different samples in the song. In addition, I don’t do a lot of sampling so this is going to be a challenge for me, and also I have been studing 9th Wonder’s music for the past weeks now…he’s my favorite when it comes to sampling. So, S.T.T.R.E.S.S. if you or anybody else on this blog have some sampling tips for me feel free to leave a comment or comments.
    THANKS!

Thanks Bennie for the props.I,m not really an expert on sampling myself but what I do is take a piece of a song that I like and chop that up and make sure it doesnt have elements in it that will conflict with what i,m trying to use it for (for ex.)strong drum beats /unless you’re going to use them. But who you should reach out to is G.C. aka Grand Chopper HA!
YO,G.C.,if you can help Bennie out

  14. Posted June 30, 2008 at 11:05 pm | Permalink

Yo s.t.t.r.e.s.s. and Bennie thanks for the love.

Yo s.t.t.r.e.s.s. my favorite part was the second verse, the for the city loop was a nice fit for the joint.

For Bennie i feel you cause this is the fourth sampled beat i’ve flipped. As far as sampling tips go, i try and Chop and reconstruct. Sometimes a straightforward loop has all the elements you need and some chunky drums add the perfect touch to complete it ( for example Primo flipping the joint he used for Fat Joe’s That White ) It’s really up to you wheather you want to twist the sounds or enhance them.

Even if your going for a loop it’s a good idea to chop it up to make sure you get the parts to lock in with the drums your using. ( i read that in an Alchemist interview )

There really is no rules to it except making sure it makes your head nod.

I hope that helped you a little.

    Peace

    Alright ya’ll, here’s my remix:

    http://www.zshare.net/audio/144954549fe6d932/

    Intro/Chorus: “Summer Song”
Main Verse: “Superstition” (chopped to all HELL ha!)

Love the concept and the restriction this week! This was a fun one, hope you all enjoy it!

  19. G.C.
    Posted July 1, 2008 at 2:27 am | Permalink

Tokyo - I love the vibe yet again! Even when sampling, you get that mood music down PAT! Rimshot is a great touch too!

Sttress - Love the switch-ups! Intro worked well (That was one of the first samples I chopped up btw) and I agree, the first verse is very Pharcyde! Ha ha Grand Chopper - funny you mentioned that, wait till you hear how I chopped Superstition! (I noticed you use the fade out during the chorus, I love using that - great touch!)

Bennie - What Tokyo said was spot on. Sometimes you can have a perfect loop that needs no enhancements (a LOT of producers in industry do this) and just loop the sample with a drum track on top. I used this technique for the Common remix from Week 3. Others take portions of it and play them like instruments (like I did for this week’s submission during the main verse). It all depends on what style you are trying to express and how you want the song to play out. My best advice is to experiment and start with just samples laced with drum tracks. Once you get comfortable with that, try breaking a sample into three parts and mixing them up under the drum. A lot of times I will do that and one combination will make me go “Oooooh THAT’S a winner…” Other times you can hear the chops in your head just from hearing the original sample. Just practice, practice, practice, and it will become second nature! Good luck!

BTW, 97.25 BPM with vocals down one note and pitched +0.5.

Tokyo, STTRESS, GC - your joints are ill! GC, that’s some crazy chopping there, you skilled as hell!

  25. Posted July 1, 2008 at 8:23 am | Permalink

Yo Tommylux that beat had that fly prince paul and de la soul in 89 vibe. Cats was about to pull out the skates and hit the roller rink to do the uptown boogie. ( retarded switch ups too )

GC nice joint the part you flipped for the hook was my favorite part of the beat.

The funny thing is when i remixed this joint and gave it a darker vibe Skee lo kinda reminded me of Lucy Ford era Slug ( the down on luck rhymes and his delivery too just not as complex ) I also hear it in the first part of s.t.t.r.e.s.s. remix

Yo Kevin like i said you crazy for this joint. What made you pick skee lo of all cats and why stevie wonder. It’s bugged out cause it wound up making perfect sense.

s.t.t.r.e.s.s. nice job again. The first verse sample caught up to the second verse in terms of illness. It just hit me that the third verse was the gangsters paradise loop ( whut up coolio ) but thats my least favorite part of the track cause the other two parts were too chunky.

tokyo cigar, love the vibe switch. we forget the he’s rhyming about his sad state as funny as it may sound. way to pick up on that. plus you’re taking more chances and it’s definitely working for you.

s.t.t.r.e.s.s., digging the change up’s. my attention was peaked the whole time.

gc, you could’ve found some way to just loop that superstition intro, but that would’ve been too easy huh? going ginsu on it the way you did was genius. plus, that quick pharcyde vocal was clever as well.

one mic, disgustingly funky and very fitting to both the original and the stevie twist required.

there is absolutely no one off point at all on here. i hope i don’t change that. i’ll be posting much closer to the deadline as i am months upon months out of practice and all of you raise that bar so high.

    Yo!
Well, dunno, what to write, knowing, that all of my remixes were maybe too “different” (and of course not as good as the others). This time it is extra-difficult (for you and your ears, haha), as I made a kind of mash-up of 4 songs, which is sounding not really hiphop.
Hope that there is still someone out there, who might like it…

    http://www.zshare.net/audio/14576204daee4195/

For the instrumental part, I ONLY used
Stevie Wonders “Superstition” - for drums and the refrain
and “Uptight! (Everyting’s Alright) - for verses
plus “Clear Mud” by a band named ”Calliope” – as extra drums in the 3 rd verse
Again, there we no other sounds added, I just used these song, so it took me a lot of chopping and usage of effects.

Feedback appreciated. I’m gonna drop some notes on the others remixes as soon, as I’ve heard them.

    Thanks and take care,
    Ill-mannered.

Sorry gang, a lot of my posts are being kicked by Firefox, so let’s try this in IE…

Ill-mannered - Interesting vibe, It reminds me of neo-Tokyo Akira or the Harajuku district in Japan…like the horns mixed in too! The offset of the vocals actually works, especially the hook! Nice touch!

Nanigan - Great to hear your work again! The vibe is very cool, the seventh-note melodies are well chopped! You haven’t lost your touch man, great work!

Bennie - Your track seems to skip a lot, I have to let it load for a significant amount before it will even begin to play…I like the beat, Ribbons in the Sky was one I was considering for sampling…you did a nice job finding a chunky sample, try switching it up now and again so it breaks the continuous loop! :)

Isbjerg - Love the originality! You did a great job chopping the individual instruments and playing them out. Has a Brazilian vibe to it, now I feel like sitting at the beach! Props!

infO - That track is straight industrial 80s! Like the drums, the background (organ?) and the whole vibe works well! Good job!

I am loving all the entries, it is always so amazing to me how different and impressive each person’s individual vision pans out when given a blank canvas to work with! Big props to everyone here!

Peace guys- sorry I missed last week. That acapella was too much for me, but you guys ripped it up. Some real smooth stuff up here. I used a cover of superstition by Sergio Mendes- for all who havent submitted, there’s a lot of great Stevie Wonder interpretations that I recommend checking out.

Wow…is all I gotta say, everyone is raising the bar so much higher every week. The caliber of talent on here is ridiculous! Didn’t make last weeks, almost had it, but it wasn’t quite there…Anyways here’s my joint. Sample is young Stevie’s “Until You Come Back To Me (Thats What I’m Gonna Do)”. Lemme know what y’all think. Props everyone!

Peace S.t.t.r.e.s.s., i tried to go big; if you listen to Skee-Lo’s other stuff, he is the king of the smoothed out lite g funk. I couldn’t touch it, so I tried something else. That intro of yours is nice (I don’t know what to sing along with), plus living for the city- I’ve wanted to do something with that for a while. You’re toying with us at the end though- I wanted the full blown gangsta’s paradise! Nice touches; I’m a big fan of a mashup like that.

    Hi everybody!

When i red the idea of mixing Stevie with Skeelo´s song the first Wonder´s song that came to my mind was “Part Time Lover”. Both songs give me good vibrations, so… i just put a bd, a sd and almost nothing else.

I was tempted to force the sample to fit to a 4×4 schema but then i realized that when something mix perfectly there´s nothing else to do but let it flow and just bump the percussion.

Hope you get the feeling and clap your hands to it.

Peace and i love this site! Props to all producers and real hip hop lovers.

Phew. This was harder than I thought. It took me 3 times doing everything all over agein until I was happy with my Remix. But here it is.
I took Stevies “Come back as a flower” (1979, Journey through the secret life of plants) plus some claps from “Cash in your face” (Hotter than July, 1980).

I tried to pick a sample of a different flavor and went with Stevie’s song called, “Kiss Lonely Good-Bye”, and then played/chopped it up for the verse portions of the song. It just seemed to fit with the ladies Skee-lo was always wishin’ for.

    Any feeback is welcome!
