We are finally getting this set out there! The Ownerz is Gang Starr’s sixth and final album, released in 2003. Thomas and I have been working on this set for what seems like forever. It was highly requested a few months ago when we were compiling some of the other Gang Starr sets. Hip-Hop Is Read release a version about a month ago with just the samples that were “cleared”. Well we all know DJ Premier uses a ton of vocal samples to scratch in his classic beats. I know we haven’t gotten all of them, but we got quite a few. Thomas didn’t want to release it yet. Being the completist that he is, he said, “I know there are more vocal samples we’re missing… I won’t be satisified until I’ve found them all!” Just to let you all know how dedicated of a digger Thomas is, he actually sits there and listens to each vocal that Premo scratches in to figure out where he got it from. I told Thomas, “we gotta put this out… people are waiting for this… we have 22 samples… let’s get it out there already!”
So here it is… but I can bet you weeks or months from now, Thomas will be coming back with another vocal sample in the comments.
